I was looking for a pillbox today and suddenly the thought came to me about a trick from the 1980's/1990's. It was hyped as something called (I think) "The Atomic Smasher" and like most tricks in magic catalogues was presented as an absolute miracle.
It was very much like dimes to pennies- but instead of a block, it was a kind of funky/cool/yet somewhat silly silver pill-box. So the penny could be "sucked up" into the pillbox. Also I think it came with an interesting penny that had two small holes drilled out into it, and into those holes sat two mini-pennies (hence the "Atomic Smasher" name. Anyone remember this trick? Do I have the name right? Am I missing anything to the effect? I'm puzzled by my recollection of it. Thanks, -M1 |

I have one but can't locate the instructions for the actual name. It was either smasher or splitter. You can find one in the "magic" section of the online auction site under "Penny Smasher".

I still have one of these too. Amazing the stuff that we keep for years and never even think about.
The one I have is called 'Splitting The Atom' and consists of a little silver pillbox with a holographic/prismatic sort of design on top, two tiny pennies, a penny with two tiny holes, and one other special something. The effect per the instructions is as follows: "A silver Okito type box is shown and a penny also on top of the table. Merely pick up the silver box and place it on top of the penny, and tell the spectator that this is your atom smasher, or just give a short karate chop with the back of your hand, like Bruce Lee. Now lift up the silver box and you will find that the penny has disappeared and in its place are 2 mini pennies. You then unscrew the top of the silver box and toss out the missing penny which has 2 holes in it." I don't recall when ore where I got this but I'm sure it was after reading some hype about what a miriacle it was! |

I still have mine I am fairly sure. Picked it up in a magic shop in/near Pigeon forge back in the late 80s on vacation. If I recall, the instructions have "Splitting the Atom" hand written on the top of the sheet..maybe it was written over the effect's possible earlier/other name.

I bought one in a magic shop in Florida, Splitting the Atom. That was long time ago, haven´t seen another one. Good luck finding one.

I'm not looking, just reminiscing about what kinds of effects got us excited in the 80's. Happy New Year Everyone

Loftus once sold Splitting the Atom. That is where I purchased them when I had a Magic Shop. They wholesaled for around $3.00. This was in the early 1990's.
