The first Rope magic trick most people learn is probably Professor's Nightmare (even/uneven ropes). For one reason, it is easy, and for another it is a very classic magic effect that has stood the test of time.

Saying that, what do you think is the Second trick everyone learns following that? Rather, what trick do YOU feel is the next logical step for newcomers? Knot throws? Cut and Restored? What do you think???

I guess that the Professor's Nightmare is just too commonly available -- I don't think it should be the first rope trick a magician should learn. I would have thought learning a cut & restored rope effect would come BEFORE the Professor's Nightmare. AND before that, some knot effects (snapping a knot onto the rope, "psychic" knots - several knots form on a coiled rope, tying a slip knot, Hunter Bow knot, a sliding knot and maybe even the Bachelor's needle).

Cut and restored rope was the first rope trick I learnt after the Professors Nightmare.

Abbott's published The Encylopedia of Rope Tricks (I believe by Stewart James) A MUST HAVE.

Rope tricks I do: Harold Sterling's Short/Long, Neff Rope Trick (my own method), tossing knot in rope, shoelace knot, Roped.

Hi Preston,I throw in a couple of phases out of Fibre Optics to create a longer routine this seems to go over very well.
I have just ordered the Simplified walking knot from Pavel to use in my larger shows, hopefully this will arive soon.

In my routine I do a series of cut and restored(3 different versions) involving a story about how I learned the classic cut and restored rope, ending with three ropes all the same, then show they are all different,(kinda nightmare in reverse)

There is the Abbotts encyclopedia, the Stewart James encyclopedia, the Karl Fulves pocket paperback book, and the Daryl three DVD set of rope tricks. Easily more rope magic than you can learn in three life times.

Cut and restore is a very simple trick to do, and you really need a great routine for it to impress your audience. I do the Jimmy Ray version of cut and restore, and I usually finish my show with it.

The Tabary rope routine, dances with ropes, and fiber optics are just one routine per DVD. The books and DVD's I recommended have a life time of rope magic in them.

I think we wandered away from Preston's question, though I think Vibono really addressed it directly. The question is not where can a relative beginner find all the rope magic in the world best compiled; it is in what order is it best learned. As someone, who is also working on learning more rope magic (I do Prof. NM, several variations of C&R, and I am working on some Ring-on/off moves) I also wonder what skills, moves, and routines to build on one another in a logical learning sequence.
