I don't sell on eBay. I just think our beloved T-Bones are worth collecting and preserving - and that's what I do (in mostly buying clearances in large amounts). On the other hand, the people I call friends here are my buddies from the beginning, we grew together into the realm of Tenyo, and most others back then had more items than me; lucky me, their loyalty now has nothing to do with my current inventory. Until this very day we help each other where we can - e.g. Killertweety just sent me pictures from something I needed, vice versa I did support Stereo in many different ways recently, I do great occasional trades with John and others and at the end of the day that is just our way of being a 'working group' who feels attached to each other. Quote:

I learned this in many different parts of life - it is something you can't avoid since there are people whose envy gets aroused when you have achieved something they have not. I always try to be kind and helpful but ironically this makes them even more having a down on me.... Apart from that, I always point out that the sheer amount of items does not reflect the quality of the collection! We have many guys here whose collection is far more difficult to top than mine as they own the really rare items and early collectibles - something I have never headed for! But hey, that topic is not about me or the ToJ community as whole, so please excuse the little digression. Back on collections and welcome the new folks!

Nicolino was (and is) a good friend to me when I was starting to build the collection and helped me acquire some of the tougher ones including Ninja Experiment, Ultra Tube, Billscape and several others. It was fun to have a peek in the warehouse

On 2013-02-25 00:23, MrWizard wrote: There are only a few of us that keep truly meticulous tabs on Tenyo eBay closings (I'm proudly one of them). I factor in numerous variables and offsets to accurately assess the ever-changing price fluctuations of a Tenyo magic item. I'm an engineer by trade and LOVE data by nature, I'm a proud GEEK! Of course those of us that keep meticulous tabs on eBay closings know the actual median value (after factoring in shill bids, hi/low outliers, and a host of other price altering variables from which a median can be accurately calculated) for a given Tenyo T-series trick. This represents a THREAT to the Tenyo crooks, cons, swindlers, and cheats in the Café (you know who you are) looking to price gouge and arbitrarily value Tenyo tricks. While something is only WORTH what someone is willing to pay for something, valuation is another discussion altogether. Value and Worth are entirely different. Period. So, for those new collectors getting into Tenyo, I highly encourage you to conduct your own price analysis overtime (eBay averages are a great guide if your averages properly factor in critical data such as outliers, shill bids or fake closings, time of year, opened/unopened, complete/incomplete, condition, etc). This will help you "value" Tenyo tricks versus blindly overpaying for Tenyo tricks. If you overpay knowingly, this is different than overpaying unknowingly. By all means acquire anything at what you're willing to pay for it, but a little analysis now and then is relished by the wisest men (Wonkafied quote!) and brings method to madness. You'll also begin to construct a scarcity/rarity guide. What you'll find is while certain factors DO AFFECT Tenyo prices; Tenyo prices are largely all over the map. It's impossible to factor in when someone gets overzealous during an auction (bidding war/bidding frenzy). That said, through some simple research, you'll better know when to back-off. So, anyone critiquing correctly conducted eBay price tracking is either stupid or has ulterior motives, everyone has the right to know the relative value of something. -Tom |

I think if everyone have the right to know, the easiest way would be to share your list with everyone. You'd be even more proud.
You can not blame one side people having a bad price appreciation and under or sur evaluate their magic tricks, and other side say they in fact they do not know because only a few people know. It's only if this list is available to everyone that you can tell if someone overestimates his tricks. Meanwhile it is not the case, because as you say nobody knows except one or two people. There are so many parameters that can go into account that whatever happens you have to look at as just a simple indication. In addition to the state, English / japanese version, package or not... Could differentiate the sale at the beginning of month (when people received their salary) and sales at the end of the mounth (when people have less money). Sales with international shipment or European shipment only, or to US only, or to France only etc. The price difference when there are several objects available or when there is only one. Difference of Shipping cost between items. And if in addition you add more subjective parameters like Bidding War/ Bidding Frenzy, Shill Bid etc... The result becomes less clear. |

Davy,
Regarding my data specifically, there is too much to MIS-INTERPRET to widely distribute as is. I would need to clean up my data collection quite a bit for easy to interpret wide-spread distribution (high, median, low). I have about 2 years of data, so this would take some time. Perhaps I'll issue a Tenyo Price Guide, this is a good idea. No matter, if there is any take-away, people should conduct THEIR OWN research so they can educate themselves to relative Tenyo values. The main point is to not pay $50 USD for a Vault Vision when you can easily acquire one for $20 USD almost anywhere on the globe. I like your idea though, there is enough flux in Tenyo pricing to create a quarterly price guide, I kid you not! |

Hey Hou-
Don't get me wrong, my son is an engineer and my son-in-law is an engineer, but if there is any group more anal retentive than engineers I have yet to find them. :) PS- Despite the above, I can't wait to see your data. Heck I tried once but gave up cause I wasn't smart enough See the formula above, then see quote below, LOL, & note the date: Quote:

On 2013-02-26 11:55, Houdini103126 wrote: I agree with both. And both can be helpfull for new collectors. I am preparing an article to give advice on how to build his collection. I have already given some advice to Pierredan and I think it was a useful awareness for him at the time, so I think it's good idea to share it to everyone. There is nothing worse than the new collectors who become frustrated very quickly because they bought too much tricks too quickly, at any price, without taking the time to enjoy each one after the other. I know it is a nice feeling to receive package every weeks, open packages, discover stuff. I also had a period like that one, but I finally realized that the pleasure was short because I watched the tricks a few minutes and putting back in the box and open the next one. It was "short term" fun and it was necessary to feed constantly with new tricks. Later I started to take my time and I realized that the pleasure was larger and much longer when I was looking, little by little, an interesting trick and more when I was able to find a good deal. I was not getting packages every week or every day, but this time I was really happy and pleasure do not desappear immediately. We must see it as a long-term passion, no press, however, take the time to appreciate. So the moral is that you can have fun AND the bargain if you take your time. If you buy everything very quickly you will be frustrated and you lose money at the end. Pleasure turns into disappointment. Regarding Ebay, all The people I sold magic tricks have always been very satisfied, Even the customer who bought the Ultra Tube is happy, has sent me several personalized message of thanks and buy another trick (floating lady) many month later. Someone who feels ripped off does not it. The price the customer pays is not the only thing that comes into account, there is everything else aside and that is not necessarily visible or displayed. Sometimes just watching evaluation of a Ebay seller it's a good start to knwow for the quality of its service. |
