So I was in the lobby at Magic-Con, (down in San Diego) when someone told me that Jimmy Talksalot was performing at Seaport Village (like, 5 minutes away)! At the very first opportunity, I ran out to a cab and booked it on down there...

...and my life was changed.

After some initial meet and greet stuff (we hadn't met in person before), I managed to convince Jimmy to do a sidewalk show. I say "convinced" because there wasn't a soul in sight, lol. No kidding. There was another performer down the way, and everyone was down at that show. We had zero people around.

"Okay, Jamie, I'll do it for you..."

Jimmy taps his wand onto the ground. "Hey everyone. Magic Show here...." and then, like magic, there was a group of five people.

"Hi folks. Magic Show here. It's pretty good..." tap tap. Now, there was like forty people! It was crazy!

And then he went into the most wonderful performance I've seen. It was from a different time, and it affected all of us. There was Jimmy, under a tree, making people smile, laugh, and wonder. People who hadn't expected to do any of those things that day, probably. Jimmy brought them a gift. Jimmy was the gift.

Thanks my friend,

Jamie D. Grant

That would have been great to film. Gather a crowd from nothing, entertain and then hat them for a huge payoff. Gold for the learning student!

Cool story,Jamie. Thank you for sharing it.

I like that Jimmy does his own thing instead of making posts like...
"what are your top 5?"
"what's a funny trick I can buy?"

He's going his own way. Very cool. I respect that.

I always remember one time I was driving across a bridge into a town Jimmy was playing,it was early in the day when there was never anyone around.I was atop the bridge at least a good mile from his pitch, when I noticed this huge crowd was gathered there.I thought,I wonder whats going on? Someone have a heart attack? Is it a big gang fight? Brittany Spears? WHAT?? But then I got close enough to catch the image of a fedora and two arms outstretched holding a rope.

Just Jimmy's day at the office.

I am sorry for taking so long to respond to this, I was just a bit stunned and flattered.

mostly because, jamie is one of those guys we all look up to.

a lot of the guys I know and really respect had said so many good things about Jamie, when I finally met him in san diego I was a little intimidated.

in following his blog and videos about his first street shows I felt very vindicated in my opinion that magic is an art form, and that lay people are intrested in magic.

his costuming, appearance, and presentation, were exactly what I have tryed to discribe when I talk about a quality product for the people.

there are marketing folks who would have us believe different, but jamie went out a did it exactly and proved it. fortunately he did it on video for us.

all this has lifted my spirits when I was going through some ruff stuff in my life.

thanks jamie for the kind words, but mostly thank you for your lifes work.

your pal jimmy

I also had to coordinate and provide transportation for 5 acts GAH!

I wish someone would perform in my town... I live in northern California in a city of about 100,000 people. Once a week there is a farmers market here and I perform at that. That however, is only once a week and I want to be able to perform down town. I cant do it myself but I know that somebody such as jimmy talksalot or someone else who is as great as him (good luck finding one) could do it. So if you ever want to make the journey up here then PM me and I'll tell you where.
I'm sure it is possible, but I just need someone to prove it.

I have to let you know as a personal friend of Jimmy's we have discussed many things over hours and days of visits, so I never really thought that I stood to learn much from reading his book "Lure With Spectacle". I picked up a copy this past weekend and boy was I wrong! His book is pure gold!

He shares things in the book that I would not feel comfortable sharing, such as getting roughed up on the pitch, getting kicked out of hostels etc....talk about some real humility!

Jamie Grant is spot on! This guy is a gift to humanity and a true credit to our craft. It is also a real pleasure to know that he and I both look up to another Jamie O'Hara
from Las Cruces, New Mexico, with the same fondness and affinity!

I predict that "To Lure With Spectacle" will be revered by buskers long after Jimmy hangs up his hat for the last time. His students around the worlde and this book will serve as a lasting legacy.

I have learned so much from reading the thoughts of Jimmy and it makes me sad, that I lost touch with him during the time, that he was not only going through this, but also writing it down. I'm elated to be in touch with my little Brother Jimmy once again!

If you want to own your own copy go to http://www.leapinglizardsmagic.com or better yet, get in touch with the man himself here, for a personally signed copy.
Louie and Lydia at Leaping Lizards Magic now offer it as a PDF Download Version

Respectfully submitted,
Devious

p.s. Jimmy has graciously allowed me to share some of the thoughts from the book here:

The thing about Jimmy is that he takes you to a whole 'nother place. I think part of it is the tone and rhythm of his voice. I was transported back into a time when life was simpler and more pure. Gone were the thoughts of e-mail and phone calls. Instead, we were all standing underneath a shady tree and watching a man make a wooden stick disappear before our very eyes. It still ranks as one of the greatest magical experiences of my life- but I think you really had to have been there. I hope all of you have the pleasure of seeing Jimmy in person one day and experience that royal touch.

Agreed...Jimmy's book is an incredible reference....He says it is a Street Magician's manual and that it is. The information contained is stuff hard earned on the street. Get it Get it get it...and if you ever have the chance to see Jimmy work...or lecture...DO NOT PASS IT UP.
