Since Nashville got rained on, why don't we have a Magicians' Flea Market at my place the second weekend in September? Help will be needed but the facilities are free.

Magic Valley Ranch is located half way between Birmingham and Montgomery at Clanton, Alabama. That is about five miles and one turn off I-65. We have an outdoor horse arena that could be used with tents and tables for vendors' booths, an outdoor stage, indoor theater (seats about 80) with stage, bathrooms, rolling hill pastures with horses, a bass lake, barns and plenty of room to use privately for the magic folks. In addition to plenty of lodging nearby, there are three Robert Trent Jones Golf Courses, and the lakes where the BassMaster tournaments are held are less than ten minutes away. We even have a barn with an art loft and balconies that would be perfect for an auction site. Perhaps we could get some civic organizations to cater food as their fundraisers. Do we need live bands?

Is there any interest?

Your place sounds great. Maybe it could become an annual event. Check the annual rainfall for those dates, isn't it getting in to hurricane season down south around that time and is that the same weekend as Magic in the Rockies?? but probably not much of a conflict with the southerners.

It is hurricane season but here that usually just means hot and dry. July is our wet month. It is usually short-sleeve weather and still very green here in September. But the conversations are about football. Roll Tide!

We wish we could go to Magic in the Rockies that week. They have a great line up and my daughter's ranch is nearby. But once school starts back, Lucy's medical clinic is loaded with school kids trading illnesses at school. Outdoors just seems to be healthier.

Bob, I think you could cobble up a fun annual event over there. Was it Col. Bill Boley who had the one day swap meet in his backyard in Louisville?? I went and sold magic wands and bought a wooden hand I later turned into a rapping hand.

My son is probably going to take my grandson to Magic in the Rockies. It's close by for them and it promises to be a great event and they welcome young people who are seriously interested in magic. I'd really like to be there to watch that but it's probably out of range for me. So if I'm in the South I'll do my best to support your event.

Glen,

You can sell them in the Carolinas to artist! They are mobile pigment that turn red and stop moving when mashed. I bet we could sell the 3D glass to go with them.

Saddle up and come see us. If people play air guitars, we can accept people who paint with an airbrush.

We're looking for you.

Having it on Saturday would make it pretty easy to drive in in the morning. How late are you planning on going in the evening? Have you got your still hooked up?

Now Tabby,

You live down here. You know that all family businesses down here have to have a lookout. Where there's smoke, there are shotguns. LOL

Set up can start at 7 or 8 and if we start shutting down around 5, it should still be light until about 6:30 or 7.

Once you are on I-65, you are here. Take exit 208.

Tabman,

Of course there is plenty of room to camp.

Folks will need to bring their tables and chairs too. Otherwise, they may have to sit on a bale of hay. You know that here on the ranch, we count a bale of hay as furniture?

Tabman,

You can camp near the 3 acre lake. Running water is nearby but not at the lake. Enjoy your camp fire. You can drive a pickup right up to the lake. The near side of the lake is about 500 feet from the arena where the magicians should be setting up tables to sell magic Saturday. It should be a fun weekend that includes a magic flea market.

Sounds great Bob. I'll pack everything including the kitchen sink in my jeep.

How do you invision the flea market?? What about your stage area. Are you going to let people sign up to perform???

I've got a couple of new items Im working on. Maybe I can try them out.

So is this now a "done deal" that I can post on my calendar of events? I've been watching this topic with interest, but don't yet see a solid When and Where and a verifying Web site for more information about Who (if there will be lectures) and how to get there. So far it still seems it's at the Mickey Rooney stage: "Hey guys, why don't we put on a show?"

The date is set at Saturday, September 11, 2010. The facility is set as Magic Valley Ranch, Clanton, AL. (The same as was used for the CANVAS Art Festival.) There is no website yet. Already there are reservations for magicians from Texas, North Carolina, Mississippi, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, and others. Admission is limited to magicians and their guests. No pets! (On a ranch there are animals we do not want bothered by visiting animals.) Of course, caged doves and rabbits are allowed.

Currently, there are plans for exhibits but not organized lectures. There will be areas for closeup get togethers, bull sessions, and stage demonstrations. I understand that some will be using the facility to make videos for both their own use and posting on the Internet. There are opportunities for those wishing to perform. Please contact us at MagicValleyRanch@MagicValleyMagic.com with questions, suggestions, etc. There is an outdoor stage and an indoor theater (Bunny Heart Theater) here on the ranch. The arena is reserved for the flea market. (The outdoor stage is visible from the arena.) Bring chairs!

Arrangements have been made for charitable organizations vending food to attendees. Coolers are find but Chilton County is a dry county. There are plenty of accommodations available but I am still shopping for the best deals.

There is plenty of parking inside the gates. We are about five miles off Exit 208 from I-65. There is only one turn and it should be very well marked. (I am a Republican so it is a RIGHT turn. LOL Actually it is the first paved road past the Fire Department.)

Does that give you a start on information?

Sounds great, Bob. Whats the charge at the gate??? Do you know yet?? That might have some impact on some of us. I know the cost of going to SAM in Atlanta has stopped me cold. I heard its almost $300.

Tabman,

Our Magicians' Flea Market compared to the SAM Convention in Atlanta is not comparing Ducks and Ducks. This is a one day event with no known headliner show or lectures. But you can still do both. However, this one will save you that $300 right up front. If you can't make Atlanta in July, perhaps it frees up funds for magic bargains at the flea market.

There is NO Admission Charge.

However, admission is limited to magicians and their guests. You may be asked to give some showing of being involved in magic. Showing that you are a member of The Magic Café is an easy way! Having an IBM, SAM, Magic Castle membership, are also easy ways. Otherwise, you may have to be the guest of someone who can show that they are a magician. Doing magic is also sets very impressive credentials.

There is no advertising budget for a free event. The best way to learn about it is from other magicians and magician forum postings.

http://magicvalleymagic.com/ is the website

Of course, emails to MagicValleyRanch@MagicValleyMagic.com should get answers to specific questions.

Barney,

I can understand that. On one of our wedding anniversaries Lucy and I did a two hour stage/theater show in the Davis Theater. I still hear about that at the most inopportune time. But a month from today we will hit the tenth anniversary. (We aren't old enough for it to be number 17. LOL!)

Seriously, Happy Anniversary! (September 11th). This is essentially a daytime thing so the night could be free.

One Mothers' Day I took Lucy to Bass Pro Shop. She actually liked it! They have a huge aquarium.

Fortunately, she enjoys magic. She has her own show.

Maybe Tabman will shoot and posts some video so you can visit later.

Things are growing faster than I ever believed. This has the potential of being much more than a magicians' yard sale. It certainly is much more than local. Magicians overseas are checking in!

Great!

If Colon can become the magic capitol of the world perhaps Clanton can become the magic capital of the south. We've been needing one since Tom Foolery moved out of Buckhead.
