So... I recently bought this item and I am having some issues with it. I was hoping that someone, who owns this prop, can help me out. For those who don't know the effect, the title explains it all. You borrow a watch. It vanishes and reappears inside of a sealed can. (The can is of the canned vegetable variety). I provided a link at the bottom of the post.
This particular effect is not in any way similar to the Collector's Workshop version. The issue that I am having is finding the correct can that fits the gimmick! I can NOT find a can that will work. In the instructions (which were written in 2003) Mr. Gambero mentions that the brand "Orlando" canned vegetables are the best for this effect. Mr. Gambero obviously lives in a different country than the United States. And I am assuming that "Orlando" canned vegetables are popular in whatever country he resides in. I, however, have never seen, nor have ever heard of "Orlando" canned vegetables. Has anyone from the US heard of this? Alternatively, without giving to much away, Mr Gambero mentions that the use of a can with a white interior would be ideal. If you own the effect you know why this is necessary. I have not been able to track down a can of vegetables that has a white interior! And I have spent a decent amount of money trying to find one! So, if anyone has this effect.. can you please inform me on which can you use? Or, if any of you are cooking dinner and happen to come across a can with a white interior, could you please post what brand it is? And, I have already tried painting the interior of a can white, and that has proven to be more trouble than it's worth. Not only that, this gimmick doesn't fit most normal sized cans. I have a feeling Mr. Gambero came up with this method in his native country with a specific type of can. Then he decided, for whatever reason, to market it everywhere. Including places that may not sell that type of can. I should have just bought the Collector's Workshop version.. But this one was on sale at Hocus Pocus for 40 bucks. Maybe this is why... Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys! http://www.magicshopinc.com/index.php?ma......0bd5156a |

Here's a link to the Orlando food company. Might be the same one.

I know some of the kidney bean cans have a white interior. I think it was a Hanover brand.

I don't have this effect, but I can tell you some canned fruit, and 'Thank You' Brand Pudding in can, come with painted white on the inside. Some vegetables come with white insides like green beans.
The real problem may be if your gimmick is made for a foreign brand can, then you may not find it in the US, as foreign companies outside the US use the metric system. Only the odd metric sizes like 11mm,13mm,15mm,etc. matches US inch sizes. I did some Google-ing with no luck, there are Orlando Food distributor, but no web site. Google is just no good for foreign searching without knowing the country. They only keep you in the US sites. I thought it was the world wide web, but not when they track you. I guess you found cans the correct size, so what foods, can brand, size (.oz) did you find fits the gimmick? If you narrowed your search down already, maybe we can tell you what brand has a white interior. |

@ Pete.. Thank you, I have done that already. I am currently awaiting a response which may take some time. In the mean time I figured I would consult with my fellow magi.
@ Brody.. I don't think that is the same manufacturer, but thank you very much for trying. @ hugmagic.. Thank you for the tip! I will buy a can tomorrow and see if it works! @ wmhegbli.. I am beginning to think that may be the case. I have tried several cans and the gimmick does not fit at all. I neglected to mention earlier that I also have had no luck finding a can that is the right size. I may just have to return it and fork out the extra $$ for the CW version. Hocus Pocus, as usual, is providing superb customer service. I just have to play the waiting game while they try and contact the supplier. |

Don't know how long the Collectors Workshop version will last on the market, meaning, being able to perform. New canned vegetables are being make like Chop Cups, rounded bottoms and only the top has a sealing edge.
That is why I have a hard time deciding to order it at this time. Everything is changing: light bulbs, canning industry, money, etc. |

How much is the CW version? I got one in a major swap of items and might be willing to sell it.

Pete there are 2 versions, one for holding liquid and one not able to without leaking. See your favorite dealer, Stevens Magic, they currently have both on their site.

Pete... They sell for 80 bucks. Shoot me a PM with a price if your willing to sell it. It doesn't matter if it's the one that holds liquid or not. Thank you for all the help, you guys.
@wmhegbli.. I went to the store and looked for hanover kidney beans but could not find any.. :-( I think the CW version will be a little easier to track down a can for. With this effect I've tried a ridiculous amount of cans, and none of them have worked. Oh well, hopefully HP will let me return it. |

Aaron Smith, have you resolved the issue with this can effect? I see Hocus-Pocus is still selling this equipment, does it work with anything in the USA?

An update on this piece of garbage prop....
I FINALLY got HP to return the product. I, of course, had to pay to ship it back to them!?! Now, I am NOT the type of person to go public and start bashing someones name, but in this case I really feel that I must let people know what happened. The purpose of this is so that YOU are aware, and so that the same thing does not happen to you. First of all, I received the absolute worst customer service from Hocus Pocus than I have received from any online magic shop, ever! Worse than Penguin, if you can imagine that. Now, I know a lot of you are going to flame me and say "Your crazy.. Hocus Pocus has amazing customer service". Well, regardless of what you say, I had a HORRIBLE experience, and that is the point of this post. First let's start off with Mr. Gambero's offering. It is the BIGGEST piece of garbage that I have ever bought, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart. It does NOT fit any can. It does NOT work the way it is supposed to, at all. And it is unbelievably overpriced. Do NOT get duped by anyone trying to sell this piece of junk.. If the thought ever crosses your mind to buy this effect, PLEASE DO NOT!!! I am just trying to save you money, and frustration. I really wish I could track down Mr. Gambero's e-mail. I would love to give him a piece of my mind. So, once I finally figured out that there was just no way to get this thing to work, I decided to e-mail Hocus Pocus and ask them if I could return it. Naturally I got the stock magic dealer reply "We have NEVER, EVER had a problem with this trick" and "We've been selling this for years, and your the first person ever to report any issues with this prop". And prior to that, I would continuously get ignored. I would send e-mails, and not get any response at all. Then I would get the stock magic dealer reply "We have been e-mailing you this whole time, it must be an issue with Yahoo". Yeah right..... Hocus Pocus was rude, and being as unhelpful as possible. I will never buy anything from them ever again. The funny thing is, I have talked to SEVERAL people recently, here on the Café, that have bought this piece of junk, and they ALL tell me that they can't believe they bought this thing. They all say that it doesn't fit any cans, and are upset they bought it. My question is this... Why doesn't anyone say anything? Why not call Hocus Pocus and TELL THEM that they are selling a bunk product? It is up to us the consumer to provide feedback, and some sort of quality control. The moral of the story??? DO NOT BUY THIS PROP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! EVER!!!!!!!!! |

Hopefully, someone at Hocus Pocus will see this and refund the shipping costs, too. Otherwise, this could be a big blemish on their business. I'm considering unsubscribing to their e-newsletter, after reading this thread. I'm careful of who I buy from.

I too have contemplated this effect, but indecision between this and the Collector's Workshop offering stalled my purchase. Thanks for the heads up.
Sorry to hear about your difficulties with Hocus Pocus. Somewhat off topic, but I did want to say I recently placed my first order with them for a 2-DVD set, which arrived one disc short. After notifying them of the shortage, they promptly responded via email to tell me they were in the process of securing the missing DVD and would mail. I received it today from MMS without incident. I believe this illustrates just one way the Magic Café is helping to raise the bar. Thanks to Steve and company for creating it, and those like Aaron who contribute to it. |

I purchased this effect from Hocus Pocus as well before finding this post. The gimmick will not work on USA cans. There are other web sites that are selling the same trick, but posting that the size of the the can used is not made in the USA. I contacted Hocus Pocus about this and they now have posted the warning about the can used.
I also talked to George Robinson at Collector's Workshop about Can It. He makes the trick easy to set up and the gimmick is made for USA cans. Buy Can It!!! Kenny |

I purchased this effect also from Hocus-Pocus and could not use the apparatus. Then I purchased Can-It from Collector's Workshop. The apparatus from the Tony Gambero version was a waste of money, but the routine itself I think beats the routine that comes with the Can-It version. I love the routine idea from the Tony Gambero version. So I'm going to use the apparatus from Can-It, part of the routine ideas from Tony Gambero and part of my own ideas also. I think after all this, it will end up being a really funny and also very magical effect. So even though I wasted money on the apparatus from the Gambero version, I don't think it was a complete waste of money. Especially since it was on a big sale, although I don't really think that the routine itself is worth the $49.00. Still it is worth probably (I would estimate) half of that. So maybe I was just out approximately around $25 worth. Oh well, live and learn. But again I'm glad I did get the routine since I also purchased Can-It because I think it's a great routine. With my own ideas added, it will be a really good addition to my shows.

Wow I'm glad I read this post! I have one for sale but I'm pulling it since I must either have a newer version or just got very lucky because mine works with the Stater Bros veg. and beans cans. I will keep this. Thanks guys.
