Just a quick rant.
The masked magician was just on TV here in Australia. I received 3 messages from different people saying "Ahh so that's how you do it!"

2 of my parlour stage tricks were revealed.

I guess we just have to accept that if there is a market for such TV then
people will make and produce them. We don't like it and it is totally wrong,
but if some people can turn a quick buck they will sell their grandma!

All I can contribute is this bit of advice given to me...

"Do the best you can with what you have."

But it is sad state of affairs when the wonder of Magic is sold for a few pieces of gold.

Tell that to your magic dealer the next time you buy a secret.

The thing is that the people who are selling magic only do to a minority of people who are genuinely seeking the mechanical principles of an effect. Whether it's because they want to perform it, or just because they can't sleep at night without knowing.

However, when the masked magician reveals it on prime time TV, lay audiences are drawn in and exposed to by a vast majority.

Initially the first specials 12 or 15 years ago here in the States commanded what were then considered good ratings. Not so for the most recent weekly series which crashed and burned. Curious Scott, or anyone else in a foreign market, what kind of viewer share does the Masked one get where you live.

12 or 15 years ago and still magicians have not learned? He did NOT get significant ratings.

I don't know how to tell if the ratings were high or low.

He revealed cut & restored rope and the cap in bottle. It's only little stuff but it's the principle. He also revealed the death saw & walking through the great wall of China performed by DC.

I was annoyed to see that he also revealed Healed and Sealed with a soda can. I initially tuned in with the idea of seeing what he would reveal and hence if there are any tricks I might want to avoid performing for a while. I don't know if it was just me, but I found the show very boring and I stopped watching half way through...I'm hoping it had a similar affect on most people. None of my friends or work colleagues have yet asked me if I had watched this show...hmmm, not a bad sign!

I couldn't watch it to the end. He began to bore me within about thirty seconds. Can't imagine many people managed to watch it to the end. What a personality he needs.

It is sad that there is nothing, at least legally, that can be done against that kind of exposure, which obviously affects the whole magic industry... The excuse that it forces inventors to come up with better ideas is pretty lame.

The masked magician hasn't been popular for years and the truth is most people will forget the exposures.

The series is back on again here in Sydney and I look at the tricks and think that it would just heighten your appreciation of seeing the effect live. Many of his larger illusions seem to be designed for TV only - sightlines at a live show would give a lot of them away.
