It’s to be held at a private campground on a holiday weekend.

They want a 45 minute show for between a hundred to two hundred adults.

The performance space is outdoors but covered and has serviceable stage with a few lights and a sound system.

As mentioned it’s an adult show. Absolutely no children will be in attendance, nor anyone under the age of 18.

The function is the final day of a weeklong campout for a group of “sex positive” individuals whose focus is geared toward BSDM.

You will be on after the Whip Show and the Burlesque Dancer but before the Stripper.

The event is clothing optional.

They are open to and actually want as risqué a show as you can provide.

They meet your fee.

Who’d say no? Would you work blue?

I contend that we are both atheists.
I just believe in one fewer god than you do.

Why would you wish to degrade yourself and the art of magic by doing a show for something like this?

Some people might find performing a magic act degrading,

try getting a whip artist (huh?) to hold a deck of cards!

each to their own. life's too short to shut off experiences that might never come around again

Comedians and magicians have been appearing in strip clubs and on burlesque shows since the early days of showbiz. Even Lance Burton used to perform at a strip club in Hollywood. Some might think it wonderful to have naked women at their job.

I agree with Olympic Adam, you may never get this chance again & think of what an interesting story it will be to tell your grandchildren!

Make it a lighthearted fun show and it may be a regular gig.

The gig was great. A bit more over the top than I expected as the last bunch of sex positive folk I performed for at this site were a polyamorous group. Who were a lot tamer than the BDSM folk were.
When I arrived at the site they were giving pony rides. If I have to explain it you really don’t want to know. Google it.
The show itself was a blast. A very receptive audience that was eager to play. Generally when one is performing you’ve got a governor on -- A filter that each and ever line has to pass through to determine whether it’s appropriate for the venue or not. This show however, no need for such a thing. Thus the lines flowed freely and there were no limits on what one could say or do. Had a strip poker routine worked out with the new Three Card Joe from Joe Monti. I had worked out a script that wasn’t dependent on the volunteer stripping. Needless to say that script has yet to be audience tested.
It’s also one of the only venues where I will perform the infamous Bra Trick. A cross dressing convention being the only other place where I’ve ever performed it.
Everyone enjoyed the show and they’ve asked me to come back next year. The only difficulty with that I’ve got to come up with some new risqué routines. I’m going to put together Pete Biro’s chastity belt routine and there’s some stuff out of Sexy Magic I’ve been dying to do. But I’ve got a year to come up with the stuff so it shouldn’t be too big a deal

Glad it went well!
I work all the time as a variety act with Burlesque shows. These types of shows are a great place to break in routines and not worry about messing up. The people are always very receptive. And I can't count the number of times I get a bigger applause than the dancers!

Plus, you can't beat the backstage area of a burlesque show.

Let me know if you want some tips and pointers for these venues. I can give you lots!

BTW Harry Anderson also used to work strip clubs. A lot of the material he became famous for was developed in these venues and then toned down for more public appearances.

I work one of the TOP Strip Clubs on the ast Coast. Im under contract there for the next 2 years , 2 nights a week. I do the main floor a few few hurs , the main VIP Tent , and one feature on the main stage ( usually my bird act with 2 girls) Its a great venue ( lights and the girls are good distractions) I book 50+ gigs a year from people I meet - and the $$ is GREAT

Sorry that I'm late to this thread.

I would work that show. In fact, I have. Two years ago I did a show for a similar group. And I made virtually no changes to my act, other than a few choice situational ad libs, one of which got such a big laugh that it's now part of the script for that particular routine. ("Remember, it's not a skirt, it's a kilt"...you had to be there.)

Master Payne, let us know if you do (or did) perform at the group's show this year. And, as an aside, congrats again on a thoroughly smashing presentation at Magic Live. It was good to finally meet you face-to-face.

Of course I would do it! What a great opportunity to not have to watch your language. Let the what the hell's and dammit'd roll. Even the old standbys the breakaway wand and stiff ropes would lead to "beleive me that has never happened" or "it's not you it's me". My con man character would be at ease. I am currently developing a drunk act but am hesitant ass to when I could perform it. I am hooked up with Coney Island side shows for their Magic at Coney series and would love to do a few of the burlesqe shows. A whole new world!!!!!

It's all a matter of personal choice and what you can handle isn't it??? Me, I've got no qualms doing it. For instance:

How about working for 1000 drunken men in an arena where you go on between the strippers? Or, working a strip club where you take the stage after every 3rd stripper to do a set? Or any of the MANY service club fundraising stags that have upward of 200 to 300 men who have been drinking heavily for 3 to 4 hours before you get up to do your act? And so on.... Been there and done that. These are great paying shows and handled properly are a lot of fun to do with fantastic audience responses!

Entertaining with swearing, sarcasm, put downs and dirty stuff work well for audiences that want it. The key is to know what the audience wants. Knowing when to pour it on and when to throttle it back. Knowing exactly "how dirty" the audience wants it when the audience says they want a "dirty show", because dirty is really a relative term.

However, if you personally don't feel comfortable doing these types of shows, then don't.

I also do plenty of children's and family shows and non-offensive adult shows. Clean or dirty shows without prejudice of either at your service.
