There were some older threads where this was discussed quite a bit.

Google:

site: Themagiccafe.com, flash appearance

I contributed to some of these threads I'm sure, as I have made at least 8 or 10 different versions of this illusion.

There are plans for a couple of PVC Pipe Flash Appearances on my site: Jim Gerrish has a standard "Appearing Archway" illusion in his PVC Pipe Illusions Book 1, but there are other options in his PVC Book 4 in "Backdrop Illusion Screens." Alternatives to flash pots for any version of Flash Appearance include having an assistant wave a banner ( solid or made of sparkley maylar strips) in front of the prop just as the appearance is made, having a sparkle curtain in front of the prop pulled up or down in time with the you know what, or causing the entire audience to sneeze at the magic moment, thus closing their eyes in unison and opening them with blurred vision or tears in the eyes, depending on the chemicals used in the sneeze powder/ tear gas canister. Do I have to include a smilie thingee so you'll know I'm joking about that last one? I don't know how smilie thingees work here. Let's try this- Smile

LOL Professor!

Andrew Mayne has a "Specter Cabinet". It is not a flash appearance, but could probably be modified with a strobe set-up. It can be built (minus any additions) for about $75.
