Has anyone performed magic at airports? Obviously not to busk, as I'm sure it's not allowed, but just to perform for random people. I guess, in a way, this would be like doing street magic.

Many people are stressed and tired in airports.
I've gotten lots of mileage out of a muscle pass of a lightweight palming coin.
As getting that visa is my main goal, I don't want to attract TOO much attention to myself.
Airport crowds are kind of rough from my experience. Once you leave the West that is. Once in Asia, it's all love.

I would strongly agree with the comments above. My experience performing magic in public venues in Asia has been very positive. The people are sincerely intrigued and seem to love magic.

Interesting one....I am planning to do this in Europe....here is my experience so far. I have not gone up to random people and done magic....though I might this time.
What I have done is card flourishes, and then when people look interested, go and perform magic for them. It has worked well.......now if I could only light flash paper in the airport!

I know - shame though. I tend to use fp to vanish card pieces and then link the smoke to Alan Rorrison's smoke gimmick.....ah well. Thanks to the lovely Magic Café users, I have a plan b.

Get an electronic flash thing. Darn... I can't think of the actual name or who makes it, maybe Kennedy. It is way bright and works instead of flash paper. Press a button and a blinding flash occurs. If I recall correctly, mine has a toe switch. You can wear the bright thing under a shirt, and it still works great.
Now, I need to go hunting through my boxes to find mine....

A basic good rule for life:
Don't do ANYTHING too surprising in front of people holding loaded firearms.
I wouldn't even use the flash in that environment. All it takes is one guard seeing it out of the corner of his eye and mistaking it for muzzle flash, and you just earned what will probably be the best and last publicity you will ever have.

I agree completely! With all the security precautions being taken at, and around, airports today, one would be well advised to AVOID anything that even comes close to guns, flashes, bangs, flash paper, cap's, snappers, smoke, etc...
Do what you want, but you've been warned!!!

If you take out cards and do flourishes, someone will comment and you can do some things. I would say it would be a hobbyist that would do it. Someone that performed for a living would have no need or desire.

I could imagine some people really enjoying it, as a way to past time while waiting for a flight.

An airport isn't really going to be the best venue to try and perform magic in. For one thing, security probably will think you're asking for money and will then ask you to leave. Ticket areas aren't very conducive to performing in, as people are getting boarding passes and then continuing on to the terminal. You won't be able to perform for any one that has already passed through the security gates, that is unless you have a boarding pass as well.
There is a reason why we don't hear of magicians performing in airports. It's often frowned upon by the Airports. It's hectic. It won't work. Maybe about 30 years ago before panhandling, soliciting, etc., was banned from airports performing there may have been an option. But even then, nothing was heard of any magicians performing in airports.

I have indeed, I was flying home from Norfolk to tri cities In Tennessee, I performed for a group of kids in a soccer league headed to Europe, there were probably 40 or so kids. I started by asking just one of them if they've ever seen a spongeball as I handed them one. Almost instantaneously I was surrounded and I performed spongeballs, followed by the ol' disappearing pen, than to greed and closed with a linking card routine, perhaps the performance lasted 15 or 20 minutes. They were probably the best young crowd I ever performed for... they were awesome! Several asked me to sign the card that I linked and several more took business cards and looked me up. Probably one of my favorite performances to date.

Yeah I performed magic at airports a few times but its when I'm about to fly somewhere but soon as I do start performing you get big crowds around you and doesn't really sit well with security lol but still a lot of fun

Performing in airports can be easily arranged. Put together a good package about you and your show and then call the office of your local Airport Authority to ask for an appointment. While at that meeting, do some magic for the person you are meeting with. By all means, make that person laugh.
In Nashville, TN for example, the BNA Airport Authority actually has portable stages with sound systems that they use for up and coming performers. Stranded passengers and passengers with a lot of "wait time" are so appreciative of this. And be sure to mention how much the kids will enjoy this. Little passengers get tired of sitting and waiting and that's why you hear them doing a lot of crying.
Even restaurants inside the airports will sometimes allow performances. This can be a bit tricky (no pun intended) if the restaurant is part of a chain. Best to try for an airport restaurant that is locally based.
You could also volunteer to record special airport announcements for traveler safety.
And if there is such an appearance arranged (it CAN be done), get the airport to issue press releases about you. They may not want to do that until you have proven your own skills and passengers have fun watching you --- but if that happens, this is very valuable publicity. It is also good for landing on local morning television shows to promote your appearance.

One additional thought. I know an event producer who actually convinced a major tv network and a major airlines to do a fabulous, totally incredible thing. A recording artist was booked on a Delta flight from JFK to perform for passengers while enroute to LAX where the performer was headed to perform for the Grammy Awards at Staples Center. That little bundle of excitement resulted in the performer having his likeness PAINTED on the Delta flight and the event was publicized almost everywhere. Airports are terrific, if you approach them properly and you do your homework in advance so you know what you are talking about.

Handcuff escape
Explosion by Dean Dill
Sword thru neck
Needle thru arm
Watch steal or pickpocketing for a big finish!
Any other ideas?

Ha! Glendd
I agree with Dr. Magic. Pull out a deck of cards and handle them expertly. It's likely that someone who ask you if you know any tricks. I'd never approach someone cold in an airport because I assume that many people are either in a hurray or are weary from travel.

Mike Ammar has a horror story about doing card on ceiling at an airport. They took him into the back room and grilled him about how it was
stuck there. He almost missed his flight.

When I used to fly a lot I usually had some close-up magic with me for layovers and delays. People stuck in the gate area are often grateful for the distraction. Once I was traveling with my then 10 year old son and he took over the performance. The crowd loved it.
I forget who related the story, but several years ago a Magician was detained in the security screening area at gunpoint. The screeners wouldn't tell him what they had seen is his case but they immediately called for back-up. It turns out that they had seen a purse frame and a billiard ball in his case and mistook them for a hand grenade. It all ended well but it must have been quite un-nerving.

The contents of my luggage must of set off some concerns. When I opened my suitcase, there was a note that it had been inspected by the TSA. The batteries to my Pure Smoke were removed, and my Fire Wallet was gone!
