For those of us who know little about the subject of steam punk can someone describe exactly what it is and is not? I have heard of it but not really come across to much information about it.
Thanks

Illusion and magic is the same, if it was possible to achieve the impossible by genuine powers then it wouldn’t be impossible and therefore it wouldn’t be magic. That’s why magic is an art; the art of creating the illusion of the impossible.

It's when the Goth's discovered Brown.

It's Jules Verne, HG Wells and The Wild Wild West all rolled into one. Mainly, but not limited to the Nineteenth Century. An alternative Nineteenth century where Babbage's Difference Engine was built and a hitherto unknown technological Renaissance was born. It's an universe filled with Cogs and gears, magic and monsters, Gentlemen Adventurers and their Automaton Man Fridays. It's a place were Science is King and Mad Scientists rule the land. But most importantly it's a genre at the moment that has no set rules or guidelines so everyone is welcome to play.

Done right? Jeff McBride meets cabaret "modern art" illusion?

Nothing is truer than the incomprehensible, because the sum total of our knowledge consists of the fact that we know nothing. Our reality is an illusion. Thus illusion is reality-Punx

One might go to my website and view my 19th century wagon complete with the 1860's discovery of photovoltaic electricity that runs my laboratory of delight. More steampunk items are in the mix. Lightning in a bottle, electrical wonders and my elcto-detecto lie detector used with my vent dummy and any kids brave enough to slip their wrist into the band.

The Alberto Giorgi clips are great and refreshing with beautiful equipment. "Supercool" gives a wonderfully succinct and accurate definition of "Steampunk." In regards to "wkitwizard", though McBride and "mask magic" are nearly synonymous in recent times, magic with masks predates him (not a dig at McBride by any means). Giorgi uses the mask as a presentational tool of character transformation within his illusion vignette...he is not doing "mask magic." I understand your comment, though I find it a little too convenient.

It's whatever the heck you want it to be. It doesn't have to be limited to copper tubes and sprockets.
The Victorian age was bigger than that, and if you add the sci-fi element to that age, the possibilities are effing limitless.
Now if only someone would recreate HH Holmes' "castle."

Is it inappropriate that I really want to go to a Renaissance Faire dressed in Steampunk attire claiming to be a time traveler?

I like the Steampunk magician concept mostly because it lets you play a lot more with how magic was often done around that era too. Play it as a demonstration of science... make up all the facts you want, as long as it's entertaining and engages the audience, eh?

You can go dressed how ever you like - we see a lot of Steampunk anymore at faire. Heck, I have seen Klingons, Darth Vader and other out-of-period looks, but it doesn't bother me.

Apparently, Steampunk goes beyond the Victorian age now too. I was just hired for perform my 18th century conjuring act at an upcoming Steampunk convention. The organizers said the act would fit perfectly within the themes of their event. They really wanted some to play-up the science and mystery element, just as I do in my act. In the planning meeting, I was certain to remind them a few times that I am not a "Steampunk" act, but they said their attendees will love it. It should be interesting!

I had to work my regular (non-magic) job last Saturday but as a reward got to cover a Steampunk convention. No magic but the article, pictures and the video should explain for people who still aren't sure. Now I'm really researching the magic possibilities of this. I do think it's cool.

18th century should be called Streampunk as their major industrial power source back then was still water driven

Steam punk is a growing thing right now and has invaded our Dickens Festival and Renaissance Faire. Ad a photographer, I find it interesting to photograph. Haven't seen a steam punk magic show yet. Just a steam punk hynosis show.

I am creating my newest contraption, my Solar Vardo. It is to be a grease burning vehicle, gypsy craftsmanship throughout, totally steam punked to go with my solar powered theatre. Please view my clip showing my wagon at a Eco festival last year. Liking my FB page will keep you abreast of the building project. more to come.

You only remember it as a Steampunk Hypnosis show because of the post hypnotic suggestions. It was better than Cats. I'm going to see it again and again.
