I am performing a show for the teens at my church (Parkview Christian Church in Wooster, Ohio), and I have decided to do a reverse Bank Night. I am going to tell them that four of the envelopes have something of the same value, and the remaining one has something of even greater value.
I plan to use only one spectator. He will magically end up with the one envelope that has something of greater value (I know, you're surprised it works out this way). I will show that in each of the other envelopes was a $10 bill.
So, what is in his/her envelope? This: (Prov 22:1 NIV) A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.

That is an excellent idea! MagicBob performed this effect at the 2010 FCM convention evening show using various types of cards: Birthday, Get Well, etc.. The final card had an uncirculated $2 bill in it if I recall with a Gospel application. I am hoping we film MagicBob's Gospel routine this March after he returns from his February missions trip throughout Africa.

I remember MagicBob had the various envelopes on a wood display stand which then changed into a cross at the end of the routine.

Keep the ideas coming on this one as I'm trying to work out a Gospel routine using the basic Bank Night effect. I used a modified 'Blank Night' from John Archer at my secular Magic Club this week & it fooled a number of good magicians. The advantage of John's version is that you can produce a number of completely flat notes (I had 3 x £20 notes) as the ending, rather than one tightly folded one. It's the wording of the envelopes & the contents I'm trying to think of. At the moment I'm thinking on the lines of God's power to rescue us from any mess we get into as per Romans 8.

Ian,
I have been thinking about Blank Night, but when I saw one of the words on the enveloped, I thought, "Not for me." I take it you would recommend Blank Night?
I am uploading a video of the Bank Nite variation to Facebook. Once uploaded, I will edit it to make it available for viewing for everybody. However, that won't happen until midday Sunday (EST) because I am leaving for church shortly.

Here is my performance of Something of Greater Value/A Bank Nite Variation. I "borrow" Colin McLeod's Kolintrol wording to help me eliminate four envelopes and isolate one.

Rob, I would definitely recommend Blank Night & John makes it very clear that the method can be adapted as the patter & words are very much his own style. I changed the 'Sex' envelope to 'Love' as I wasn't happy using that one & added lines about 'You may want love; you may want money. Some things I can't get for love nor money' & that went down well. Strangely, I think 'Sex' could have a use in a Gospel setting with wording about how it has been cheapened & distorted in modern (& ancient) society. Other envelopes could have things like 'Money' etc on them for that.
Now to have a look at your video!
Just seen your video & nice clean effect. I assume it's a PATEO type force or similar. I did feel a bit sorry for the spectator though!

Ian,
I love Colin McLeod's Kolintrol off of his Opening Minds DVDs. It is just about the only piece I perform when someone asks me to show them something. I generally only perform shows. I used his selection process, though with a different outcome.

I don't know that Kolintrol one. I'm really a close-up performer & mainly cards & coins. If I get asked to show a trick I do a colour change deck & the Harry Lorayne No 2 version which doesn't use any gaffs. It's a mind blower & could be used for numerous Gospel themes about change etc.

I know there are some performers who do not like that the magi wins and the spectators lose. For that reason, I went with just one helper, and I went for the church's youth minister to help me out. While I kept the money, I tried to frame it as the spectator walks away with something far greater.

I thought you must have used a spec that you knew wouldn't be upset by 'losing'. There are one or two that I do which have the spec losing, but I would normally only use good friends for those & use a 'Wow, didn't you do that well!' trick for general, & particularly kids, helpers.

In my magic shows, I always set up the helper to be the one who makes everything work. I was talking to a magician from Coshocton, Ohio, at Magi-Fest last weekend, and I liked the way he framed what he did: Everyone is magical; he is just a facilitator of the magic we all have.
I told him that is basically what I do, but I never thought of it in those terms.

I just came across this thread. I really like your presentation, Bobby. I think it would work perfectly with Max Maven's "Coupon Caper". Straightforward, no procedure, just them choosing an envelope and taking out the paper inside it before you reveal what's in the other two. I'm curious if you still perform this piece?
I performed for an audience of drunken mimes. They hurled invisible bottles at me.

My 2 cents:
I'm a creature of simplicity and would use Edwin's "Everyone Wins Plus"
I would have a custom t-shirt done with the verse printed on it and a saying like "Strving for a Good Name" (something catchier - but you get the point). I think this would be worth it if it's a signature routine you do every show.
At the end, I would allow the person to start to walk away with a round of applause and then ask them to come back to the stage. I would tell the person that they have a good name for being such a good sport and that I didn't want them to leave empty handed and present them with the t-shirt. In this way, it's not monitary, but it's more of a gift or reward for helping.

I love blank night. The method is fantastic and I love the fact that the spectators get to open the envelopes themselves. The real magician fooler is that the notes are produced straight without any folds!

Haven't been around these parts for a while, appreciate the thoughts. I have worked up a new routine that I want to share (not related to this), and saw this.
