Hello!
I received "Deja Zoo" By Samuel Patrick Smith today from magicone and I love it! It seems to be a nice Mentalism routine easy to follow to the kids and atonishing to the adults...Never done it in public but now polishing a nice routine for it and hoping to play it live sooner!! Anyone here have experience with this trick??? Thanks, -H

Yes!
That being said - you may want more. My best advice is - keep it simple. It is what it is - don't over work the routine, then you very well may loose them - I hope that helps! |

I use it in my animal show always gets a good reaction, I always tell the children that I can't draw very well and the result may not look like the animal they think of!! Gets a laugh from the adults. I also agree with Signor Blitz keep it simple and perform as is.

I love this effect and it goes over great.
I don't do it "as is". The kids choose after I've drawn an animal, so they match me. It was my partner Tom's idea to do it that way and I really like the kids doing the mental magic. The kids love naming the animals as you go. If you set up the animals alphabetically you won't have to look at them and can make eye contact as you go through. I have the larger version and I changed the stand so it pivots on an axis in the center (I got rid of the original stand altogether). Some jungle drums and marimba music played softly in the background add to the effect. -Mary Mowder |

I believe I saw Sammy Smith perform this on one of his DVDs as well.
I believe he asked the children to think of one of the animals after he went through them all at which point he read their mind and drew the picture. You then find the animal and put it next to your predicted drawings and they love it! I believe Bruce Amato has a nice performance of Farmyard Frolics on his DVD "Amato, Kiddin with Kids", another great pack flat play big prop. |

Hansel,
I did not know Farmyard Frolics but I looked it up on the internet. I've seen ABC Stung and the Circus one performed. -Mary Mowder |

When the second volunteer states their animal of choice, I say, "Would you like to change you mind...... it would be nice if you picked the tiger." This gets a laugh from the adult and some kids because they think you messed up.
I sometimes toss out safari hats to my volunteers as a bit of a thematic thing. If there are adults in the audience, I sometimes use this bit which gets a laugh from them: I usually pick a boy and a girl and explain that the girl will go first.... (pause) and then say, "like in real life." I then explain that if the boy has chosen the same animal as the girl, then he'll have to change his mind. I pause and say, "Because your thoughts don't count..... like in real life." |

Seriously, I think that line is pretty harmless if said with tongue fimly in cheek.
I'm thinking about buying the effect just so I can use the line Mark PS Just kidding! |

I've never had a problem with the line. It depends on your personality and how the audience has warmed up to you. I don't use it all of the time, it depends on the group.

I have heard nothing but great reviews about Deja Zoo, but I'm wondering if the whole mentalism aspect of the effect can loose the kids at one point??

As with Sammy's great products, this one always get great ooohs and aaaahs from both kids and parents. I haven't used it in a while and I'm going to get it back into my show for this year. It is a great routine if you want to add some simple kids mentalism in the show. The adults like it too.

Ok....I think I'll go ahead and buy this. It may fit nicely with my mind reading chicken routine. I use Mark Mason's "Any Book" to mind read their word. I refitted it to my kids show buy adding a rubber chicken who peeks over my shoulder when they are writing their word. The kids yell "he's peeking". I then snatch him back down, but then he sneeks a peek over the other shoulder. From there when it's time to guess the word, the chicken (I use one that swawks when I squeeze it) looks thru a magnifying glass held up to the person's ear....bits of business about what he sees in the brain of the volunteer. It gets lots of laughs. Maybe my chicken can mind read some animals too.
Thanks everyone. |

I've worn two of these out. I guess I'll buy a third and put a sealant on it or something. You are right about keeping it simple and it baffeling the adults just as badly as the kids. Heck of a mentalism trick.
