The tallow obtained by burning ten candles will yield one extra candle. If you burned 1000 candles, how many extra candles could you make?

First correct answer gets a prize.

IAIN was right, but he does not want the prize.

So here is another one:

Sam Sham, Captain Frank, and few other men were swapping war stories. Sham told one about his uncle Sly who lost an arm during the war. "Uncle Sly met a General who was shocked that Sly had lost his arm, and yet had not received a medal for bravery. The general removed one of his own medals and pinned it on Sly´s uniform. He then mentioned that had Sly lost both arms, he would have received a commission. Hearing this, Sly withdrew his sword and with one swift stroke he cut off his other arm. Shortly thereafter, he was appointed Minister of Armaments." Captain Frank looked blanky at Sham and said, "You couldn´t possibly expect anyone to belive that yarn, could you?" Why not?

If you are not interested in the prize, don´t answer.

If you have only one arm, you can't cut it by yourself

The candle answer I do not understand. Every ten candles burned releases enough tallow to make one candle.
1000 were burned, how many extra candles could be made? Why is the answer not 1000/10 =100?

Because each of those 100 can be burned to make another 10 and those 10 can be burned to produce 1 more. So total = 100+10+1 = 111.

Further to this, I can see where Iaian is coming from. He has burned 1000 and made another 100. He burns them, produces another ten which he has burned to make one final one giving a grand total of 111 extra candles.
The question states that 1000 candles were burned, not 1111!
