I’ve seen these on the web and thought I’d take a whack at making one. All the wood was salvaged from pallets I got at Lowe’s and Home Depot. Run them thru the planer, mill on the table saw and sand to taste. Finished off with shellac. On of the best parts is seeing what grain pattern comes out at the end.

It looks great! The fact that this is made from re-purposed wood, and shop-designed makes it all the better, too! Good job!

Look beautiful. would to ever make any to sell? I love the re-purposed wood idea. I do that with fishing pole bags I sell. but use cloth.

Excellent.
The only problem is that it's at the wrong house. ;-) |

Thanks for re-using the wood. Wish I had that kind of talent. The details look very nice.
While I appreciate the quality of your work I see this as a craftsman look, which I'm not a fan of in magic tools. It is a masculine shape and, IMHO, should have a jewelry box feel - not a tool box feel - so women are naturally drawn to look at it during your set. Women have little interest in tools, but they like jewelry! On your next one try rounding the edges to take the box feeling out, give a "softer" and a contemporary feel. I like the real grain but as a presentation tool the outsides should be dark and the felt bright to direct attention to the action. Black drawer and yellow felt would be my choices - for my character. |

Very nice, BUT if you ever make one again, make it a "magic drawer box." This is the first box I've seen where the drawer box principle would make sense. You open the drawer to get your next trick, but it is empty. You close it, open it again and the trick has appeared. What could be better? It actually gives you a reason for having a drawer that is magical. Now, if I could just find a reason for the dove pan....

Knowing what I do about MuleePete's character and act, I'd say his design is pretty dang close to what he wants to convey. Cowboys don't have much use for jewelry boxes.

Tis a very pleasant thing to be among like minded folk. Thanks for all the kind words.
One of the biggest reasons for working with the pallet wood is.....I'M CHEAP.....and its beautiful wood. Some time everything comes together inspite of myself. MB - Thinking a Rinestone Cowboy may use a jewlery box. But you're right, not my style. Spellbinder - That is a great idea. Does your site have info on the mechanics so I could adapt and build one? CharlaineC - It would be nice to make and sell what I do, but the customer service is what gives me pause. Right now I only have me to please. But you have me thinking about it. Working on turning a wood chop cup right now, will post a pic when it's ready. HEY....ANYBODY GOING TO THE IMX CONVENTION IN LV IN MAY? I am, and I'd like to meet forum members that are. Mulee |

You'll find the drawer-box design on page 218 of Hoffmann's "Modern Magic" which is available free on-line from The Learned Pig Web site.

If he's a Cowboy he should carry his props in a saddle bag!
Too many guys build props and boxes for function. As magicians, function is just the start. As MAGICIANS we are supposed to direct attention and that can be assisted thru color and design. Your audience will never have a special experience if they don't see the effect clearly. Mats should be mini stages, designed to frame the effect and bring attention to it. Black is great if you want to hide something, but it does not focus attention. Many think they need the contrast to show the props, but a small presentation area needs attention brought and focused first. (Think about waht a spot light does) Techniques could be used to make the box appear smaller, tightening the area where eyes will focus. And if they focus on the presentation area that aids in mis-direction needed for loads and steals. As builders and craftsmen we get carried away with the technical details. All I am saying is when you build a prop look beyond immediate function to see how it can be a better tool for magicians to create a magical experience. |

When I was working at Ruby’s Inn at Bryce Canyon, here is what I used. The HooDoo Critter is what I came up with for the kids.

Pete - Great work. I love Spellbinder's idea of converting it to a drawer box. Perhaps when I am finished with my current projects...
