I bought the plans for this. Looks really good. Has anyone had any experience building it...and how does the effect look in actual use?

There is a site on the Internet called 'YouTube', it containes videos people have made of their illusions and other interesting subjects.
If you go to http://www.youtube.com and enter Andrew Mayne Specter Cabinet in their search engine or just use Google search, you will find this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97L98PA27_w If you click on the above highlighted reference you will see one persons creation of this effect. While I have been on the Café, I have not seen a post where anyone has actually built and performed an Andrew Mayne illusion that post on the Café. I could have just missed them. |

Thanks, Wm...I will check the video out. I am thinking of using this as my opener for my next stage show that I am currently designing.
Posted: Mar 27, 2011 3:49pm Just watched the video...looks pretty good in performance. I was wondering about perhaps building a frame for the front to make it paper rather than cloth like the back and sides. I thought it might be more effective to burst out of it rather than just pulling the cloth down and walking out...thoughts?

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't a certain Nevada strip performer do that with paper with great success? I think it would look great use rice paper and some fog. though what about using the heavy black pvc? for the frame is that a bad idea?

I thought the performance was nice.
I thought the method was pretty un mystifying. Then again, I saw a news report the other day that wondered at the "mystery" that a white girl with blonde hair and blue eyes and a black man with dark hair and brown eyes had a blonde haired blue eyed baby "since brown eyes are dominant.". And the even deeper "mystery" that his twin had black hair and brown eyes. In a US quickly moving backwards into total ignorance, I shouldn't be surprised that they find things mystifying that I don't.
It is always darkest just before you are eaten by a grue.

Cyberqat--we are looking at it through trained eyes. The average layman doesn't know what to expect, so doesn't know what to look for. I agree that the method is simple...but if look at MOST of what we do (especially the big stage stuff) the concepts are pretty simple...it is the PERFORMANCE that makes the effect.

I built mine 2 weeks ago and used it on stage last night. I had the stage lit a bit so it is not just pitch black, and it worked PERFECT. I am cutting together a video clip of it to show an idea of how you could light the stage for it.

My current plan is to add a string of strobes around the front of the frame to simulate lightning, and a small fog machine.

Built one out of Speed Rail fittings and 2" aluminum pipe, had aluminum frames welded and covered with white spandex for the sides and loose cloth on the front and backed this was used for an entrance to great effect and was really sturdy

Mine just absolutely KILLED in performance (sorry I didn't update sooner). Unfortunately, due to lighting, the video did not turn out.
Built it for less than $150.
