Following the Magic Con 2011 convention here in San Diego, Roberto Giobbi did a lecture/demonstration/DVD recording session concerning deck switches. Mr. Giobbi kindly invited convention participants to help out as part of the audience for the session recording. The recording was done by Dan and Dave Buck; I didn't hear any announcements about when the recording might become available, though. Mr. Giobbi began by going through a routine demonstration of 7 card effects (for recording purposes, he then performed the same routine again). Following this, he detailed each effect step-by-step with special emphasis, of course, on the deck switching techniques being used, as well as explaining other techniques, or variations on the techniques used. In the routine, he told us, were 7 (!) deck switches. The emphasis of the session was on what he termed "effect switches", that is, deck switches that can be effected as part of the trick, even though the spectator might not realize a new deck had been introduced. He contrasted this to 'technical switches", the hidden "gambler's sleight" type where the action is hidden from everyone. He does use (and explain) one of these in the routine - I was one of the 'assistants' for that effect and I had no idea anything had happened. I hope they recorded my exclamation of "Wow!" at the final reveal. -) I was very curious about deck switches (and have gone through Mr Giobbi's Card College volume 4 where he discusses the topic), so I really enjoyed his discussion and demonstration. He's always a pleasure to watch and to listen to. I'm looking forward to the commercial release of these materials. Larry Samuels |

Interesting! I hope this is something they release soon! I'd certainly pick it up.

Well, here it is mid November 2012 and I wonder if Mr Giobbi's DVD has been released?
It would sure be one to get. |

Danny,
Unfortunately, it hasn't been released, and the last time I asked, I was told it would not be released (I can't say any more than that). There are a series of Genii columns by Giobbi on deck switches (July and Sept 2009, then July and Sept 2010), and his upcoming book, of course; these cover pretty much what I recall from the recording session.
