Genii finally got its iPad app approved by the Apple Store. But I can't make it work. I try to login with my Ask Alexander user name and password, and then get an error message: "Authentication failed". Has anyone successfully used this app yet? Any advice? (And yes, I've emailed Genii with the problem, but no one's gotten back to me yet.)

Okay, I finally got it to work. It's a decent effort, but not nearly as elegant a solution as the MAGIC Magazine app for the iPad. MAGIC reformatted its magazine (similar to what the Wall Street Journal and WIRED Magazine have done with their publications for the iPad) to make it easier to read and navigate on the device. It's seamless and easy to use, whereas the Genii app feels a little clunky. A format designed specifically for a device like the iPad creates a new, more immersive user experience. The Genii iPad app is kind of like reading a PDF of the magazine (with the exception that you do have video added, which of course is the killer app for a magic magazine). I look forward to watching both publications explore the boundaries of this new medium. It's an exciting time for magic publications.

I love it. I'm not going to bother with paper magazine when renewal is due. This format really suits me. I've not seen magic one as I have iPhone, but it does the job and perhaps will evolve over time.

Richard is bundling the print and digital issues together, so, yes, you will still have to bother with paper magazines if you want read Genii digital.

I was under impression a digital only version would be available for us guys overseas. Either way, this is a great addition.

Oh, I think you're right about digital only overseas. Sorry about that. Didn't notice where you were posting from.

Merenkov,
How did you get the app to work? I'm currently having the same problem you described.

The app will begin to work automatically a few days after you login to the Genii section of Ask Alexander. Once you do that, your information is then cued-up to get pushed over to the company who maintains the digital edition of each issue. There are several electronic hoops that have to get jumped through at our end, but you should be able to use the app a few days after first loging in to Ask Alexander.

Mralincoln, in answer to your question, I think I was using the wrong password. Between the Genii iPad app and the ask alexander site, you have different field names that are not entirely consistent in the way they are used, for example: user name, account name, password. And then the Genii site itself has a different password and user name. Add all this up, and it makes for confusion. I just kept inputting different combinations for the fields until I hit upon the right one. When you use different developers for different things (apps, web sites, etc.) you often end up with internal inconsistencies that create confusion. It's one of my complaints about the Genii iPad app in general (go to Genii's forum and see numerous posts of confused people trying to either make the app work, or make the iGenii site work). The good news is that you only have to input the password one time, not every time you download an issue.

Buy an Ipad, and subscribe to GENII. This app alone makes it worth it. It is GREAT!

We've found a bug in the password system for iGenii. Please do NOT use the # symbol in your password when creating your iGenii account. Using the # symbol will prevent you from logging in to the iPad app!

Unfortunately, you cannot order individual copies like you can on the MAGIC app. This is a serious drawback I hope Genii will correct. Until then, I guess I'll be buying MAGIC issues.

Why would you want to buy single issues? It's much cheaper to subscribe and you get both paper and digital. You can look at it either way:
You pay for the paper and the digital is free.
You pay for the digital and the paper is free.
