Years ago I dated a young lady attending beauty school. I had mentioned I needed a case for my magic, she said they sell cases at her beauty college. I took a trip over the the college and found a very nice make up and roller case, black with the handle on the top center. It has served me well to carry my larger close-up items like the Cups and Balls, Chop Cup with all the loads and 4" dice.
So I thought I would pass on to the Café members that this is another source for a perfect close-up case. Things have of course changed since I purchased my wooden case. If you would like to be organized with your props, then this may be a solution for you.
Here is one with padded compartments and adjustible dividers as well. The handle is on the top so your props do not get dumped around and jumbled.

This is just a sample, but if you have a hair college in your town, it may be worth a trip to find the Perfect Close-up Case for your porps.

How many of you use the table-hopper's aprons while you are working? How many use a portable close-up table? If you use the table, does the drawer provide enough storage for your props, thus serving as a storage case as well?

Hi ralph007, care to share how the padding is and how it fits your coins, cards, and small magic parts.
I will say this is much better the those tool cases that stink (smell) for some reason when you open them. Having your supplies available at a gig, is a great advantage when you want to do something different or special for a returning customer.
I am sure it will give you years of use.

Do the top halves do a 90 degree turn when closing up the case?? Just curious.

You can even get them with an even bigger trunk on wheels you can set the case onto - and fasten it, of course. Lots of space for dove pans, change bags, square circles, ...
Cheap on eBay, btw - at least in Germany.

Thanks for sharing. I purchased a case very similar to this from a store like Home Depot.. Bauhaus to be exact.. It keeps my items organized and the ability to adjust the dividers the way I want is a big big plus..

My new close up case cost just £4 from B&Q (Home Depot is the equivalent in the US). A plastic tool box, to which I have added a cut-to size close-up pad. Perfect for most close-up situations, apart from walkabout. It’s even ideal for formal close-up (though at just 2” deep, it won’t hold a standard cups and balls set).
The total cost (including close-up pad) was just over £15. A lightweight carrier, with many compartments, perfectly sized to hold cards, and many other standard items. Totally customisable with the plastic inserts, and all stay in place due to moulded indentations in the lid.

Here you see my "close up for kids" set. I may decide to buy several more of these, they are so incredibly cheap, and have a case for every occasion!
This is a very practical and simple solution for many close-up workers, as well as looking very smart, modern, it's lightweight, and an of excellent dimensions.

Yeah. I think I've got some privacy thing going on with Picasa....I tried to post the images directly on this site, but was disallowed....the links work fine for me, but obviously they're my own links! Will have to try to fix that. Thanks for letting me know.

I find this size so much more practical than the larger cantilever boxes mentioned at the top of this thread. Those might be good for permanent storage of close-up kit - but I can't imagine using them when performing. The reason I made this case up, is so that I can always carry a selection of close-up magic, which is instantly and easily accessible, and there is a good size mat to perform the tricks on. I frequently show a couple of close-up effects to older kids and parents, when attending Birthday and Family parties...so this is where the case will come in. All my close-up gigs are walkabout, so for those I carry all my props in either my pockets, High Caliber Holster, or clip-on carriers such as the JOL or Joshua Jay ones.
The funny thing is, I was prepared to shell out quite a lot of cash, if needed, to get an appropriate case. But none of the "professional" close-up cases offered exactly what I was looking for: many were too heavy or too large; some had drawers which looks good at first sight, but would not be as workable for my purposes; but this simple solution fits the bill perfectly!

Potty
Do you have legs for the case? How would you "use" it? That is, on a table, some kind of stand, tripod????
Thanks

The large "Hobby-Case" holds all the props that I take with me for the strolling performance.
On arrival I transfer the contents to my pockets.
It's lightweight and the upper tray is already sectioned; the base is spacious enough for larger items eg chop cup.
Bought mine from Aldi - less than a fiver !!

I really like Potty's approach to the close up case because I used a standard Lefler suitcase table for my kid shows and sometimes, like Potty mentions, before or after the show, some folks might ask for another trick one on one. With Potty's case, it's a simple matter of opening a nice organized case to pluck something out.
However, I also like wmhebli's find of a makeup case because I tend to like doctor bags for closeup, though I don't have one. The makeup case seems superior to the doctor bag, which are getting extremely expensive to purchase.
I could go either way on this, but I'm going to get one of them for sure.
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums.

I'm feeling the Samsonite case. Doesn't get more organized than that. My order is IN!

Potty, is your Newton's Nightmare a Wellington? The only reason I ask is that mine is seventeen inches in length and yours seems shorter in relation to the size of the decks. I like that you can carry that in a close up case, that's the only reason I'm asking the question. I'm more curious about whether the effect comes in different sizes. Not that I'm going to buy a second one, but I'm more curious. Thanks!

Here's a take on Potty's idea. I liked his so much, I found this in the fishing tackle department of K-Mart. The manufacturer is Plano and they make durable tackle boxes of all kinds. This one cost $19 and can be set up to your specific needs. I like Potty's idea of the close up mat too, so I just included a pic with one on top of the case. Not sure if it would work well, but I have to play with that a little
