There are a lot of things that can be learned by listening to your audience, and a few dangers, too, if you listen to the wrong things. Here is an article all about that topic.

I think it sometimes helps to have someone listen for you. I say that only because, once upon a time I was talking with friend who was mentioning various names to me, names that I did not know, but he was talking as if I knew these people. I said to him I do not know these people that you are talikng about. He said, yes but they all know you! You don't know your own reputation! He then proceeded to tell what that was and I was quite amazed by it.

If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Tommy,
Yeah, I know what you mean and I couldn't agree with you more. Sometimes we can't see what we are at all because we are too close to the subject matter. Along the same lines, I remember watching the first few videos that I had made of myself. I remember being quite astonished at how I sounded, what I looked like, and how I moved.

I know people who will not watch a video of their own act because it depresses them. They want to keep the illusion of thinking that they are better than they are. That can be a real impediment to moving forward in the business.

No performer will ever be truly great or even good unless they know and understand HOW they appear to the audience. You can 'hate' to watch yourself, but do it anyway. But, you own subjective assessment of how good your act may be could be skewed sharply by your own prejudices and that's the reason it's handy and helpful to have others you at least 'think' you can trust watch what you are doing and offer comment.

Mostly, I believe that 'most' folks CAN tell how good they are doing if they watch a video of themselves. What might be difficult for many is knowing what the heck to do about what they see?

So what did they say? I'm as curious as a flat-chested high school girl pumping her best friend about last night's date.
