Ok, I have one method that I have bought to produce a rabbit. It really isn't working for me. I paid a lot for it, but I still don't think that justifies me "making it work." What methods (boxes, etc.) would you guys recommend to produce a rabbit as well as where can I get it? (I have a Netherland Dwarf.)

My main rabbit production does not use a box at all. I use a bag. It is a production of a large rabbit from a coil (more a wad) of silks. It is done center stage and away from tables. Honestly it is so easy to perform that it embarrasses me to mention that I do it.
Your rabbit is small enough to not require a box at all (I produce a Flemish Giant). In fact you could modify a dove bag and pocket for the production. Blow up a balloon, hold it in front of you, pop it, and viola there is the bunny! Or open a newspaper, show it both sides, wad it into a large loose ball, rip it open and there’s the bunny. Or take a large scarf (silk) and pull it through your fist a couple of times, toss it over your hand, whisk it away, and there’s your bunny. I think you get the idea. You need a jacket, a pocket (think dove pocket), a bag (think dove bag) and your beautiful Netherland Dwarf bunny and you have a minor miracle. If you want to use a box, then make a small “Blamo Box”. That is, one that is seen empty through the front, lift the lid, the sides all fall down and the bunny is revealed sitting there. Hope some of this helps.

Brian,
I sense that you don’t like the bag or body load methods of producing your bunny. Let me try again. There are several box type of livestock production items available for your consideration. A large “Drawer Box” might fit your needs. Mikame makes a killer version (check out Doug Tilford for a good price or your favorite magic dealer). The “Balloon to Rabbit” is a standard that can be easily found in most large magic shops. I use a homemade, “Blam-o” box that works very well for me. The effect is a paper cutout of a rabbit turning into a bunny when the sides of the cage fall down. I also have used a MAK made bunny box. In the box is shown empty, from the front, A bunny is shown drawn on a small blackboard (black piece of metal), the black board is put into the box and the spectators can see it standing up right inside the box. The door is closed, and then a top door is opened and a bunny appears. I used it for years in parlor-kid shows until I built the Blam-o box. (I still have it if you want it, PM me for details). I have also made and used a cardboard production box right our of Grant’s Victory Carton Illusions. A small cardboard box is shown empty then a rabbit is produced. It is cheap and easy to make. Finally, while not a box, I have gimmicked a newspaper (the old “Devils Newspaper” from the 50’s) and used it to produce a dove or a very small rabbit (like your Netherland Dwarf). The newspaper is gimmicked and no bags or body loads are used. What production device do you now have that does not work for you? Hope some of this helps. Harry

Man Harry you are awesome. Thanks to everyone else as well. I'll check all those out!
I think when it comes to Kid Shows and stuff I would just prefer a special box or something, very easy to load under the table really quick at the end of the show. But, I am very seriously considering the bag load method as well for the finale to my "Magicians Magic Act." I have much wanted to produce my rabbit at the end of the act, and he could definitely stand to be in a pouch for 7 minutes. Anyhow, great advice guys. |

Here are some additional ones:
The old "Budda Screen" would work with a dwarf. Fire Pan (I use mine to produce a baby dragon, a chinchilla but could be used to produce a dwarf...ie - "Kids, didn't you know that Dragon's are still around..they just became very good at camoflauge, why else would Anya (charater from Buffy) be afraid of Rabbit's?). Circus Wagon Hope this helps, Yours, ATM aka: Bob

I use the 3-D TV by Hocus Pocus Magic. There is lots of room for a regular-sized rabbit or a dwarf one. There is lots of gags and by-play that you can do with the effect. I've added a red plastic flashing rabbit to activate the rabbit ears on top of the box. The part I like is when I place the box over the child's head, it proves indirectly that the box is empty. I then X -ray the child's brain. It turns out blank so I explain to the audience and the child that they might not be the next American Idol. Well , don't worry for I'm going to turn you into the world's second greatest magician. When I pull out the plastic sliding front, there is a laminated photo of the world's second greatest magician peforming the Zombie. The box is removed from the child's head and he waves not one , but two wands over the box before the rabbit materializes. I like it because there is audience involvement and lots of gags.

I use a nice custom production box now.
I used to use a "rabbit wringer" in reverse (box with crank and rollers). Instead of a vanish I would open the front to show it empty, close it up. place the flat rabbit on the rollers and crank it in. Open the top and pull out the full size bunny. People seem to forget what leads up to any rabbit production. Once they see the "cute" bunny they oooo and ahhh and applaud.

Well, Brian, the offer from Harry is wonderful. I use the MAK bunny box for my Dutch Rabbit. She is a bit heavy 5 lbs, so I had to have it made 4 inches longer.
I get to it by way of Run-rabbit-run. I have had to move it to the end of my kids show because the kids (mostly girls) go nuts and it is hard to get their attention back. Bob |
