I will generally do ambitious card routine with a classic CC instead of a DL (So I can keep it going as long as I like), then if they want more, I'll do a shuffle to control the cards and do a force for a mind reading. Then, if they're still with me, I'll do the "fastest trick in the west".
If they want more, I'll jump into a routine appropriate for what they liked the most, (mental magic, the slight or both). Although by far the easiest to perform, people I do this for tend to be most amazed by the mind reading, so I'll omit it if I want to do a slight routine instead of mental. (if the cards are old or poor quality, obviously I use the DL instead of CC for the ACR.) |

I have a series of routines, including Daryl's Untouched, in which I never touch the deck (and can all be done with shuffled decks). When I remind my audience at the end that I never once touched the deck, that gets plenty of startled reactions.

I use Paul Vigil's Diplopia as impromptu card mentalism with a borrowed deck. It can get pretty great reactions if presented well.

Hand the deck back and remind them I am not a trained monkey here to do tricks for the crowd? Or barring that

My favorite go-to, at an arcade, movies, the mall, pretty much anywhere with a machine that accepts dollar bills. Let the spectator choose a card, shuffle, cut and mix the cards. Reveal a card that they deny to be theirs. Turn it back over, shove it into any machine with a dollar acceptor slot. Some machines won't, but a lot of them will take the card fully and reject it. Turn it over to reveal it has changed to their signed card. I got the idea from Jay Noblezada!

It seems to me the idea of inserting a card in a machine to reveal a card is developed in the Greg Wilson's video Serie In Action.
And if a deck of cards was handed to me, I would do a force, and read their mind to reveal the selected card in a dramatic way. Simple but effective. |

I am always ready to do Maurice Fogel's Three Card Prediction. You can use any dog eared deck. The deck doesn't even have to be complete. It doesn't even have to be a conventional, four suited deck of cards. It can be done with Uno cards, Old Maid cards, Rook cards, Tarot cards, etc. And best of all, you can repeat the effect for the same audience if you want without getting caught. I've had people ask me to do psychic readings for them after an impromptu performance of this excellent effect.

Check and look the book of the great Roberto Giobbi, Card College Light. The card tricks are all self-working and you can find some variations of very good classic tricks already mentionned in this thread. And you can also find very interesting references for each trick.
For me a good impromptu is the Piano Trick, followed by something like Back to the future by Al Leech or Thot Echo. Mike

If everyone around really insisted, I really like doing the Invisible Card (Cummins, FASDIU) or Doctor Daley's Last Trick.

Hi everybody
I do my "simplest ACAAN in the world!" with a borrowed deck shuffled by the spectator. Always fun to perform ,great impact, and fools everybody (including Performers) Gerard |

If I'm only planning on doing one trick or in a time sensitive situation, then like others have said I do a force and go into my mind reading routine. Its quick memorable and leaves them wanting more. If I know that I am being asked to entertain for more than 5 minutes, I start with a simple joke trick that I came up with. It starts with a joke where the spectator thinks no magic has happened and the trick was just a gag, then an indifferent card is color changed into their previously selected card. The humor breaks the tension of that first magic trick (lots of spectators when mentally preparing for a magic trick are not ready to be entertained they are ready to solve a puzzle). The humor breaks the tension and then the color change makes a magical moment happen when its not expected bringing that magical feeling you want them to have. Also, I have found that after people laugh with you there is a bridge of trust built and they are ready to be mystified instead of worrying about being fooled.

I usually ask them what would impress them the most. A lot of the time they say they don't know but other times they will say something interesting... It's a good way for me to stay on my toes.

If I am handed a deck of cards and asked to do something, usually a simple force and rvrlation is what I will do. If asked for more, depending on amount of persons watching I am starting to use Seperation Anxiety by Bruce Bernstein (a two phase OOTW effect) or The Crusade by Atlas Brookings (an impromptu ACAAN which uses a borrowed deck)

Put a small envelope down with prediction inside
Spectator examines & shuffles deck (blue deck for eg:) counts face down cards onto a pile-stops when wants -free choice turns over last card dealt Magician opens envelope- slides red back card onto table (rip up envelope)-card matches spectators Any deck used--(TC Tahoe notes I think where I first read about it) I used it for years on the street to build a crowd around table etc...very powerful instant reset-any deck used.. |
