I note the bottom card shuffle it to the top, force it and drag out a mind reader reveal. Laymen have no idea how wrong that is.

I have two options:
The Trick That Fooled Houdini (Let's say there's no table available) 1) An Ambitious Card Routine that ends with: 2) That triumph routine in Bannon's "Dear Mr. Fantasy" Big fan of the above. I get to talk a bit about Houdini and Vernon and then embellish on the story a bit. I apologize for not remembering the names of the effects in Dear Mr. Fantasy. But the effect is mind blowing, and a treat to perform. I read it every year. It's great for anybody who gets tossed a deck of cards at parties. I do believe Mr. Bannon mentions in the book that much of the work in this book has that situation in mind. Aces (Let's say we've got a table available) 1) That spectator cuts to the aces routine in Bannon's "Dear Mr. Fantasy" 2) Twisting the Aces 3) The Last Trick of Dr. Daley Frankly, the standing routine up above is by far my favorite, but this second set is really a journey toward Dr. Daley's Last Trick, which destroys. Spectator cutting the aces is very cool, gets them immediately involved in the action, and gets me the aces. Twisting the Aces is a marvel and an unusual card trick to the layman. They really don't know about non-pick-a-card tricks and Twisting the Aces establishes one as a real magician who is not just your Uncle Joe who knows a few tricks. Now they are fascinated and ready to be kerploded by Dr. Daley's Last Trick. |

I will generally do ambitious card routine with a classic CC instead of a DL (So I can keep it going as long as I like), then if they want more, I'll do a shuffle to control the cards and do a force for a mind reading. Then, if they're still with me, I'll do the "fastest trick in the west".
If they want more, I'll jump into a routine appropriate for what they liked the most, (mental magic, the slight or both). Although by far the easiest to perform, people I do this for tend to be most amazed by the mind reading, so I'll omit it if I want to do a slight routine instead of mental. (if the cards are old or poor quality, obviously I use the DL instead of CC for the ACR.) |

I have a series of routines, including Daryl's Untouched, in which I never touch the deck (and can all be done with shuffled decks). When I remind my audience at the end that I never once touched the deck, that gets plenty of startled reactions.

I use Paul Vigil's Diplopia as impromptu card mentalism with a borrowed deck. It can get pretty great reactions if presented well.

Hand the deck back and remind them I am not a trained monkey here to do tricks for the crowd? Or barring that

My favorite go-to, at an arcade, movies, the mall, pretty much anywhere with a machine that accepts dollar bills. Let the spectator choose a card, shuffle, cut and mix the cards. Reveal a card that they deny to be theirs. Turn it back over, shove it into any machine with a dollar acceptor slot. Some machines won't, but a lot of them will take the card fully and reject it. Turn it over to reveal it has changed to their signed card. I got the idea from Jay Noblezada!

It seems to me the idea of inserting a card in a machine to reveal a card is developed in the Greg Wilson's video Serie In Action.
And if a deck of cards was handed to me, I would do a force, and read their mind to reveal the selected card in a dramatic way. Simple but effective. |
