Two of the first rules to keep in mind are: 1) never perform unless you are asked (or hired) to do so and 2) know your audience (e.g., what they expect and what you are confident will appeal to them) and choose your material accordingly. There are some people -- even supposedly educated and therefor reasonably intelligent -- who will perceive ANY form of "magic," especially anything perceived as "mentalism," "psychic" or "paranormal" as evil and react accordingly. I live in the Northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC in one of the counties with the highest average income and educational level in the nation and yet it has a very large fundamentalist Christian population that goes absolutely bonkers at even the thought/suggestion of "magic." While I have never encountered the situation you describe, I have had at least one occasion in which such a religious zealot sent a letter to the local Jewish Community Center that booked one of my very innocuous family magic shows telling the Center leaders that they were doubly ***ed -- first, by being Jewish and second by hiring someone who (in their words) "has the Lord's name but does the devil's work." Go figure.

Take him appart from the group and told him "how do you do it". Give him a psychological pseudoexplanation, that can be more acceptable for a "spiritual" person.
I know that other performers would tell that´s only a trick, but I never do that. That happens to me before, and now I just laugh for that experiences.

If someone physically challenges me, I will never back down. So if he got physical, I would have hit him.
Otherwise I would not take abuse from anyone - or let anyone spoil the enjoyment of the others. So I guess what I am saying is stand up for yourself and don't back down.

I've had people say similar, but never quite so publicly. Regardless, my response would probably be similar:
"The rest of the world must be a big scary place for you if you think THIS is evil. Take my advice: Whatever you do, don't ever go anywhere near that thing they call The Internet." ;) Reg |

I don't want to alarm Paul but I do believe his tormentor is now posting in the gospel section of the magic Café.

HA! I would have got crazy evil on him. Think the old Gypsy woman from Sam Raimi's 2009 film Drag me to Hell.

Yeah, I very much doubt that this guy really was a religious nutter, judging from the age and background of the group I'd say he was just a hugh tossa who's goal was to upset and stop you from performing. He would have had a few drinks or something else before arriving probably. Obnoxious extroverted fools are everywhere, and alcohol tends to magnify them. Depending on your personnality and aggressive tendancies, you need to learn to deal with them. That can be by clever speech and one liners to get others around to look at them as the jerks they are.

I would have waited until the attack was finished then pulled out a piece of paper with the prediction "Tonight I will be attacked by a lunatic called <name> ". Whilst everyone reads this, I slip my n**l w****r back in my pocket. And tell the attacker that it had been foretold (or Four Told if your name's Devin). That would hurt harder than a kick in the nuts.

Oh my...
That's never happened to me. I read through the suggestions and wonder what I would do? I've lots of experience with drunks...but this guy? Honestly, I would first smile at him and do something non-threatening with my hands. Then I'd tell him I'm simply entertaining people and he's welcome to stay and watch. Getting confrontational with anyone who is "riding the short bus" will only escalate the situation. But I'm sorry that happened to you on your first show. Look at it this way: things can only get better, right? David

That's one of the reasons I liked working biker bars. Anyone who gave me s*** suddenly noticed several rather menacing guys standing on his sides and behind him.

I usually perform in a theater or somewhere with a stage, so people who come to see me are paying to get in and there is a buffer between them and where I am. I have never had a crazed person attack me let alone ever be heckled. But I have been in confrontations with crazed individuals, the majority of the time just remaining calm, non-threatening and assertive while letting them think they are correct always worked. They usually calm down at that point.
Peace

First I would try to defuse the situation with a bit of light hearted banter.
If that didn't work I'd lose the happy face and just stare. Amazing how that can make people think twice about messing with you. If that still didn't stop him, and he attacked me, I'd most probably kick his arse. Happy days... And while running away without your shoes might be the best thing to do, it's not for me. I'd rather get my arse kicked! |
