I winced when he came out in that outfit, etc. But it worked for him. As we say on this site over and over don't try to be someone else. He was unique and I applaud him.

Whatever WE think of him consider this. The judges were left open-mouthed. Now, I am no fan of Piers Morgan or Sharon Osbourne but they HAVE been around and seen a lot. And even if THEIR opinions don't matter, the audience were stunned too. I'd say he was a hit.

I thought he was good actually. Its not an easy thing to do in such a short time. Did he get through to Hollywood? It would be interesting to see of he could sustain it.
When I first saw him I thought he looked really stupid. But he was entertaining.

Ummm errrr where was the mentalism? Or 'psychic' anything?
He asked for a card, they named it and quickly he got it out of the deck. - That's just a magic trick.

One could argue that any "mentalism" routine is just a magic trick.

Yes of course but isn't the secret to at least attempt to make it look like some 'mystic' sense is involved?
I.E. Pick a card and without doing any manipulation with it you make out that you are reading their mind to tell the cards identity. - yes just a trick, like what he did was just a trick, but where is the mentalism angle in what he did?

He bills himself as a "psychic magician." For some, that may mean that everything he does is psychic magic. For others, it may mean that he performs psychic effects as well as magic effects, not necessarily at the same time.

Unique. Strange.
...unique.
Good for you, Fig! The dancing was strange and the purple nail polish was...well...also strange. But you're on your way to Vegas and I'm here. So congratulations, guy.

It depends on whose point of view you are taking, the performer's or the viewers'. Perception is everything.
What Fig did (very well I think) was presented, and intended to be perceived, as a magic trick. I doubt that anyone took the "psychic" in "Psychic Magician" seriously, given Newton the Cat, the dancing, the costume, persona etc. Fig is a comedy magician, not a mentalist regardless of how he bills himself.

I enjoyed the predancing part! It was simple and quick. Hopefully that will help him be able to gradually build better acts for future performances in the series. I worry that some magicians start with their best of the best, and then can't beat themselves later in the competition. Im thinking with a cat that cool, he could do some great cat illusions!

The whole "name any card" is obviously something he does a lot (and does very well). But makes me wonder what he's going to do in the next round...

I think a lot of you are missing the point, it's meant to be funny, it's meant to be weird, it's meant to be quirky.
And while many of you dwell in your "rightous indignation" because he used the word psychic, he is off to vegas, loving life and one hell of a card magician.
I think it's worth thinking about as well, if you and "cat man" both did a trick for the same person; in 30 years time, who do you think they would remember more?

Ask yourself *why* they would remember catweasel more... I don't care that he's off to the bright lights and wish him well. I just think everyone jumping up and down saying he's the greatest thing since sliced bread need to get out a little more. He's a card magician. With a quirky angle. That's all.

I'm pretty sure he must have figured out he isn't going to win Jay, but he's a grown man that entered the competition himself, unlike some of the kids that get pushed into performing. But if he's having fun and gets some exposure for himself is it really cruel? He gets a free holiday and will probably be spending more time on the streets around vegas entertaining people and having fun than doing anything for the show.
Is he really going to be that broke up about not winning? I doubt it..

To the nit-pickers: Would you accept this as a mentalism effect if Fig had said, "Before I came on stage I predicted which cards you would select. I placed two on top of the deck and one in my cat's ear."?
Don't overlook the fact that he even gave Howie Mandel a brief reading: "That's because you've got a good heart."
Considering the fact that they only give you 90 seconds to perform, I think Fig had the right approach. He got their attention, he won them over and he got moved on to the next round. I look forward to seeing what he does next.
He's not going to win? He's "untalented"? Where have you gone, Norman Vincent Peale?
(sigh)
It's time to dance.
If you crave the more mystical, look upon it as "dancing in the spirit".

It would help, yes! It would establish that some mental process had taken place.

Well, I think the term magician is enough to send the message that its just light-hearted tricks and nothing else...
he wasn't dressed or presenting himself in a serious way - just as an old guy who was a bit whacky, that's all...and the cat meiouwed at a good time too...
no harm done to mentalism, lets be honest...unless you happen to be an old man, billed as a psychic magician, and is a very serious mentalist with a dog...
it made a change to see, rather than yet another throat-warbling cretin who thinks running up and down the scales is classed as singing a song...(go listen to aretha to learn how to sing a song, and when to riff vocally)...
the guy was ok...

No he almost certainly won't win but doesn't it make a nice change from kid singers and street dancers just to have a LITTLE bit of variety?
Here's an interesting thought. Given that what he did is more or less along the same lines as David Barglas does, how far do you think HE would have gotten with the judges and/or audiences? In fact it's an interesting excercise to consider how our fave mentalists and magi would succeed.
For my money I think Bob Cassdiy and Chan Canasta are two of the few who could (or would have in Chan's case) come up with an interesting enough presentation AND been charming enough to keep the judges intrigued enough.
