I've been sitting on this information for a long time. Sixteen years, to be precise. It's the answer to why Harry and Bess Houdini never had children, and it was told to me by Houdini's late niece, Marie Blood. As far as I know, it's never been revealed in any book or article. Until now.

This is worth clicking back into to read the comment by Gregory Edmonds, who knew Marie and knowns the Bloods very well. Intrigued by what he had to add about the "born on the boat" thing.

You said that Bill Kalush didn't include this in his biography. However, in "The Secret Life of Houdini," Kalush and Sloman mention that Harry and Bess never had children because Bess was infertile. To quote, "We know that there was a medical issue that prevented them from conceiving. Anecdotal family evidence points to Bess's inability to bear children (Kalush & Sloman, 130)."

Thanks, cameronb. I actually did a follow up post with this quote and some additional info from the Laid Bare source book here:

Thanks, Kevin. I never saw this comment of yours. Looks like Marie told us the same thing.

She told us the same on several visits to see her at her home in Rochester, NY.

We also have somewhere a video interview with her that she gave us permission to use.

Not sure where it is. When we have the time we will search it out.

We are very busy right now with calls from our television appearances, setting up promotions and brochures for our coming season, our long running seance show, etc.

I remember reading that Harry was used as a subject in his brother's early X-ray experiments.

I know it's spelled wrong.

Re-reading the Kellock book, I don't think Bess wanted children.

That's interesting.

I was thinking of re-reading Kellock myself. You really get the best picture of Bess from this book. She was a firecracker!
