Amazon has a lot of magic sets for kids that won't empty your pocket.

Been over six months since this thread first appeared. My 9 year old (soon to be ten) is begging to do magic for his Cub Scout pack, and he’s fooling the grown-ups. (There is a book out called “Cub Scout Magic” but it’s basically just “floating a needle” or “looking through a tube with both eyes open” type stuff.) He’s doing real magic, and feeling very good about himself.
His favorite trick right now is passing a borrowed quarter through a borrowed handkerchief. He’s learned about angles and misdirection, and is trying really hard to make up original “patter”. I give him access to my props while we’re at home, but for his “public performances” it’s almost all done with “normal” items.
Big brother (11) is less involved, but he still tries a few things. His favorite is “Cheek to Cheek”. He can do a near perfect ribbon spread and zip flip. Even knowing the secret, it’s fun to watch. We made our own “marked deck” (How’s that for a really sick father/son project? ) and he’s learning to use them. Si Stebbins is helping him practice math skills.
Just meant as an encouragement to the OP. Don’t underestimate your kid(s). If they can stand, talk, and keep a secret for at least 3 minutes, they’re probably old enough to do something worthy of applause.
You don't need to be psychic to predict the future. Any mother who's ever spotted her ten year old hauling his skateboard onto the trampoline KNOWS what's about to happen!

Get her a magic kit from a local store that is how many got our start!
Theatre, cinema, and literature are all better forums for telling stories or creating drama. Stand-up comedy is better for telling jokes. But magic is unique in creating the Twilight Zone sense of turning a corner and finding yourself in another town, in another country. Deception is the means to that end. - John Bannon
