Brad, I don't happen to get into this neck of the woods much, actually never been on this particular street here before but it looks interesting...

For me, closeup tricks are a must have to break up the monotony of what you like best. I happen to like coin magic and use a small variety of closeup magic to break up the coin action and it works well and helps keep the attention of the specs that I have seen.

Some closeup effects that I have found that play well include:

-TT (For vanishing a hanky or for a bill fold, can't be beat for instant magic - Greatest device ever devised)

-Hoy's Big Bold Book Test (This is amazing anytime you do it...So easy but quite baffling)

-Crazy Cube (Simple little dice trick, packs small but plays big, and they'll never figure it out)

-Anything by Steve Dusheck but I suggest his "Ringer" or "Copper/Silver Transpo" aka Digital Dissolve - (Classic!)

-Anything by Platt Magic but I suggest his latest, "Sugar Rush" (Sweet!)

-Anything by Jay Sankey but I suggest his "Leaving Home" or "Killer Key" (Both quite clever and magical)

-Easy but Amazing card tricks: B'Wave, Princess Card Trick (Easy but amazing)
*And learn the power of a good "DL," it will open many doors for you with a regular deck of cards.

-Ultimate Positive Negative (Clever piece of easy Mentalism)

These are some of the ones I have come to play with it moreso than a lot of other stuff out there. Of course there is tons of closeup magic out there and some great stuff indeed, but for me I like simple, not difficult to learn and present. My coin work is where I may deal with more involved effects. I don't want to think about complicating things all-in-between and these closeup effects fit the bill. They are all super easy to learn and do but quite amazing. When you put it all together, it really strengthens your routine and gives you great time to relate to your audience or allows you to quickly move on while leaving something unbelievable behind with the specs. Most of these closeup gems are not long-winded and deliver their punch within a quick flow. I have found that doing a few good closeup effects will really ratchet up your magic. Like I said, there's a lot out there and choose a "few" things you really like and work on presenting those, and they will work well for you as you come to be able to do them in your sleep for people anytime, anywhere, right up close.

Simplest and most effective are normally different.

This is a reputation maker. Not that hard to learn, and powerful to laymen beyond most effects.

It is from Richard Sanders.

I have had it in my wallet since it's release, and it is powerfully strong magic!

I can make 3 suggestions - all of them require absolutely nothing but borrowed objects

1: FREAK by Will Houston - Do a freaky twist with your pinky finger and crack your knuckles (a big crack!) YOu only use your finger and with the right showmanship and acting, you can horrify your spectator. Lots of other body related effects on the market that are impromptu.
2: The serial number bill routine from Colin McLeods mentalism DVD, "Opening MInds" It is a 3 phase routine and is excellent (Uses 2 spectators), I'm afraid the name of the trick escapes me but someone else could remind me.
3: Plenty of Iphone Tricks out there but most of them lack strength, you could try the calculator prediction trick where the spectator names 3 3 digit numbers and you multiply them together using their calculator and your prediction turns out to be the product - If you like Iphone tricks and mentalism, you could also check out the DVD "Double Feature" by Patrick Redford, the first routine uses a tiny bit of setup but not much.
Hope that helps

The calculator trick comes from Rich Fergusons DVD "This is Mentalism"
The trick from Colin McLeod, I cant remember the name, but the trick is shown in the first part of the trailer (almost full performance)
Good Luck

I use 3 impromptu iphone effects: iPredict, Mental Killer, & iForce. I love doing iPredict where the spectator can call the number on their phone to find out there card. Mental Killer does the same thing, but has another feature where you can predict a day and time of the week they name. I use iForce for some esp & cities in my state predictions. I usually will only do one of these for a spectator. I also might use Sankey’s Holy Moly or Killer Key.
If I have nothing on me I’ll do a matrix with a torn up napkin, or torn and restored.

I always lead with David Roth's 3 ball routine. I always enjoy performing and hopefully the audience enjoys it to.

One thing that I always have in my inner dress coat jacket is the ORIGINAL (NOT the more modern metal version) of the Joe Porper toothpick paddle. It is GREAT as a natural thing to bring out after a meal in that impromptu situation!

The effect has to be Scissors, Paper, Stone from Scam School at Revision3.
Host Brian Brushwood.

This is an absolutely fantastic site and effect.
Loads of impromptu magic here.

This routine uses everyday objects at hand, and around you.
Ths concept of Scissors, Paper, Stone is taken to another level here.

An absolute killer.
I have loads of mileage on this one.

8 card brainwave is another quick and easy to carry effect - it can be found on Ammar's Easy to Master Card Miracle's vol. 1. Ammar's Ice Breakers also has some "ordinary items" effects that might fit your needs.

I agree with Rhett. The original porper toothpick paddle is a winner. I carry it in my top pocket; even if folks think they know the 'paddle move', the kicker is a killer. I'm a wedding toastmaster and the screams of laughter when the bride or some other lady shouts "it won't go in", make the trick a winner.
CMH and ring moving up band are my other 'regulars'.

Any trick with a paddle move. The best one I have seen is sold by Keith Fields, his spotted paddle. Cheap, small and very effective. You can carry it in your wallet easier than the ID.

What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?

My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums.

Viking magic also has some great classic close up effects that have withstood the test of time...and don't settle for the cheap knockoffs:

Bill Tube
Nest of Boxes coin box trick
Spirit Nut....great because it's so small and easy to carry all the time.

Just to name a few.

Also from Viking I would recommend Transmental Gemsation. Really cool, mentalism. But I don't know how it fits with an impromptu criteria, but then again how important is that. It sounds like you are interested in gimmick effects. I think Sugar Rush was mentioned... I strongly second that! It has some flexibility as far as several variations in the way that you choose to use it and it is just so much fun not only as a performer but reactions are great! Dragon's Breath is way cool as well, although not as versatile as Sugar Rush (in my opinion) but a really good effect. Both of those are Platt Magic effects, if you're interested.

For me lately, I have Kolossal Killer by Kenton Knepper, such a joy to have and you will forget it's there...

I also have reality twister, it's such an oddball effect, less like magic more like freaky science.

or
Ring leader with a shoelace and ring
or
Crazy mans handcuffs done with hair tie's.

P-PIK prediction cards has the advantage of everything being done in the spectators hands. There are no forces and any of the cards may be chosen with a different result each time. Have used these cards from Kipp Sherry for many years.

Richard,

I totally understand the Quantum Bender 2.0 but please elaborate on the Hundy 500. I have seen so many versions of this effect and have grown very tired of them. (Just like the many versions of the coin/cap in bottle) I know I am thinking with a magician's mind. Why do you rate it as one of the best?

Maybe I am just bitter that I can't simply walk around with 5 real 100 dollar bills in my pocket.

All small town magicians know what 793.8 signifies.

Anything with coins or paper money. People expect you to have currency in your possession. If you just carry playing cards it isn't anywhere near spontaneous.

Hello
You might want to consider purchasing
-A Svengali deck (can't go wrong here.... I would go with the David Blaine Transformation. I use it and it's great)
-Invisible Deck (I don't own one, but I have used them before and you need to get one. Thy are great!)
-Thumb Tips
- Fancyband (You can download a tutorial off the T11 website. I got it, its a great little impromptu party trick)
