Penn & Teller(R.I.P.) Fool Us
Seems they are toning down the exposure and have just turned the show into a "Come and do your old tricks and forget the fooling us part just get your 5 minutes of TV fame" So that's a major improvement and the magicians that prostitute themselves on it won't need to pretend that there is some higher motive than there own desperate self-promotion anymore. Good comical ending with no exposure - Just like a real magic show should (and used to be) done.

The magicians aren't "prostituting" themselves. They are performing - that's what they are supposed to do. Quite a concept I know - hard to fathom. Maybe they should just sit home next time and avoid all the free exposure, marketing and increased fame lol

Good Family Entertainment.
The last episode in the series, with a nice routine from Martin and Paul Daniels. The Daniels Family are touring UK theatres soon and I am looking forward to seeing them. http://player.stv.tv/programmes/penn-and......28-2100/ Paul Mc.

(They perform as well!) And it's obvious with your 'business goal negates everything' attitude, that you never will get it. Not even seeing that that is the tacky bit that means they are prostituting themselves. People willing to risk exposure and mess it up for decent performers, just for there own self-promotion are the new disease that need purging before they infect everyone. But please carry one refusing to see the obvious.

Laura London (Sadly the last part is cut off with Penn & Teller's guess as to method):

P&T show at this stage has shown itself to be (IMO) a positive for magic generally, and has not been an exposer of massive secrets by either P&T or the performers. If you have nothing to do other than rant constantly about some of your fellow magicians being "prostitutes" Shrubsole, then keep ranting away and perhaps discuss with your favorite therapist. I would suggest that it is sour and elitist attitudes (with those hurled insults) like yours which hurt our art more than the talented people that I have seen on this superb show thus far.

People could do well to look at what the public really think about methods, some people wont accept a method no matter how much it is hinted at, or don't get the subtleties that are indicated.
Sometimes it's not that big a deal, WE think it is because we know what is going on.

The exposure is minimal, most people won't really listen to the explanation and if they do most won't get it all, those who do will forgot about the sketchy description of the method in a few months. There will also be people who watch but try to ignore the explanations as they like to keep the magic magic and not know how the stuff is done.
It's doing more for showing good magic and promoting magicians than anything else on TV and if people go hunting on the net to see whether those magicians are performing anywhere they will hopefully see others performing in the area and go and see them. Unfortunately, TV companies seem to think that these days shows have to have some sort of panel to pass comment on acts rather than simply let acts perform on variety shows...so either suck it up and have a minimal bit of exposure on TV which will be forgotten about by viewers or just keep magic out of the public eye to be forgotten by the large majority of people. Yes there are some magicians on TV, Blaine, Chris Angel but they are 'hip' street magicians and not that accessible to the large majority of people. Derren Brown can;t be called a magician really as he puts across the mentalism side of magic...which most people don;t actually realise is magic hence where can magic be seen by most people to keep it alive? |

I like this show, I feel there is not too much 'exposure'. I also doubt Michael Vincent who is all class, would appear on a show that he felt 'prostitutes' magic in anyway.

In a way I almost like the 'exposure' side of this show. Here is my reason why.
Since Criss Angel started doing his series (I liked his Halloween special years ago), many lay people have asked what I think about that Criss Angel guy on TV after seeing me do close-up. A few have said unprompted that they think much of it is 'camera tricks'. I said nothing but asked why, they responded that there was so much editing and obvious camera 'jumps'. Admittedly one of those who asked was a 'media guy', but many weren't. Luckily only a few asked if he used actors, I said maybe a few of his 'magic buddies' were used for some of the more 'gory' effects, while a crowd watched. As I feel it is wrong to put a major magic player down in public. This Penn & Teller series, shows that there are many methods behind tricks in more ways than one. As sometimes they guess and are wrong, this I feel almost adds some mystery to magic. As it may have seeded a thought that most lay people may never have had. That often there is more than one secret to an illusion! |
