Hello everyone!

How do must of you store your coins and gaff coins? I have just got back into coin magic and have a few different types of coins that I would like to keep together for my effects. I have a Schoolcraft sh**l and a 1964 Kennedy Half, 5 - 1971 clad Kennedy Half's (and soon a Johnson sh**l), 2 - Walking Liberty's and a few other small effects such as the dime and penny.

I used to store my coins in a small box that I had, but the box got lost along with 3 other 1964 Kennedy Half Dollars. Seeing how expensive it is to replace them, I learned a valuable lesson on having a good way to store my coins. I do not want to lose another silver coin or worse an expensive gaff coin.

What is the best way to store coins like this? Is there a special coin holder that I do not know about?

Thanks!

Please list the coin holders and purses you know about, that way we can suggest the ones you missed. Thanks.

My advice would be to get a number of little coin purses sold on the market like these:
http://www.seomagic-usa.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/31/products_id/220

This only requires you to grab a purse to carry a trick around with you. I have seen those multi-pocket purses, but it would look strange to pull out a separated organizer to present a trick. Jerry O'Connell and others make them, this is USA authorized dealer:
http://www.wizardcraft.com/OConnellJOL.htm scroll down the page.

There are many versions at online stores. But this is my experience and thinking on the subject.

I made a very simple one out of two sheets of black felt. It has pocket/slots for the various size coins and folds into itself with flaps to secure the coins. Cuts down on the jingle jangle too.

I purchased a large coin purse last week. Here it is : http://themagicwarehouse.com/cgi-bin/findit.pl?x_item=TA6511&keyword=COIN%20PURSE
It has two frames on the top and one zipper on the bottom. Leather's quality is very good and you can easily put 15 half dollar size coins in it.. I know it's not very good looking, but you can carry lot's of coins.
I also carry one smaller one for the tricks that use a purse.

Some of the cases for memory sticks for Cameras and such work well. Not all of them will work. I found a good one at Best Buy a few years ago. Just look around at Best Buy, Target and Wal-Mart. You might be surprised

Yeah, I use the memory stick holders from the computer store. Cheaper than most stuff on magic sites and with numerous pockets for coins, and a PK ring.

I just had a hard time explaining to the salesman what I wanted... and why... but my ex is the manager and they expect weirdness out of me by now.

Actually I've tried many and don't really like any of them. The O'Connel ones are nice but only carry a limited number of coins in each pocket making it difficult to actually keep effects together. I tried what the memory stick holder guy suggests also and it has the same problem. I think the best way is to use a couple of different methods of carrying around coin effects and keep all of those in a single Zip Lock. For me I'm using a cheap Chinese Jewelry Bag w/Zipper and Snap to carry 6 Halves & Shell. I use an O'Connel to carry Coin Through Coin and Hopping Halves. Those are the only effects I carry w/me at present. Of course I've Scotch & Soda, Dime & Penny, $1.35 trick, etc. But I don't do all of them all the time and only occassionally stray from my old reliables. I'd suggest individual Zip locks, however your coins will clank and get scratched doing it that way something I don't believe you'd want, I know I don't (they're too expensive to allow to get beat up). Good luck on this!

I use archival quality coin flips. They are transparent and will hold two coins which will not touch the other. You can put several coins in each side if you don't mind that they touch. They are good for carrying around a gaffed set in your pocket or for storage. Lots of dealers have them. I got mine at http://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/products/coin-flips/
About $7.50 for 50

I use the Jerry O'Connell Coin Tidy, which is a very neat little flip-open leather case, and holds 6 coins in individual compartments. JOL also has a variety of other holders. No one has ever questioned why I carry my coins in this unusual little case, but I use it to carry Chinese Bit, mostly, which of course, are three coins from different countries....so it would seem natural that you wouldn't just pull them out of your pocket. I do think for most effects using "regular" everyday coins, it's more convincing to simply keep them in your pockets. The problem then, is that you might inadventently spend an expensive coin gaff!

I use a CaseLogic Sd card holder and it has 6 slots that can fit 2-3 coins deep each. I carry about 12 coins in there with a magnet and bang ring.

The CaseLogic SD card cases are my favorites - they also have that protective lining that will not harm your coins. As JSeligstein mentioned, it will fit 12 U.S. half dollar-sized coins or 6 U.S. silver dollar-sized coins. I also use the Kueppers Keepers, as mentioned by Jeff, and I love them too. Roy offers them in both a vinyl and a leather with a protective lining.

The link I posted previously has links to the various pouches and cases mentioned on this thread as well.

I use the CaseLogic SD card cases too. The other item I found to be useful is a CaseLogic portable hard drive case. I used some high density foam and cut out slots for 5 Half Dollars and 5 English pennies on either side and my 3 coin boxes in between.

I feel that it important to make a distinction between storage for performance and storage for the item when not in use. For coins not in use, I use something known as a generic slab holder available at most coin shops, that sell collectable coins. This type of holder is made from two pieces of plastic with an archival foam insert that will hold the coin secure. This type of holder will prevent the coin from all sorts of damage that can occur from shelf wear or laying in the magic drawer. Also, this type of holder can be used over and over as where the paper flip types require tape or staples to close.

Here is the very style I use for my shiners and other coins.

http://www.stevensmagic.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=112651

In the second photo you will see the holder laying next to a deck of cards. I always hated getting my expensive magic coins in a zip lock bag. So I provide a better reusable holder.

The holders will come in all sizes and will save your coins in the long run. For under a dollar or two each you can never go wrong when storing coins when not in use.

Now for performance its a whole other issue.

For performance, coins fit nicely and are EZ'ly retrievable from a cell phone holster filled with dense foam. Cut pocket slits in the foam as mentioned above. These holsters can also be clipped to pockets and even inside one's jacket. Where ever it's clipped, coins may be retrieved without having to look. Remove the flap cover if desired.

For storage, coins and sets fit nicely in soft CD sleeves which are held in a case. The sleeves also hold jumbo coins, packet tricks, etc. CD sleeve cases are available in single, double and quadruple "page" sizes. If a CD case is purchased some of the sleeve pages may be removed so as to fit other props. Some CD cases have locking latches or one could fit a padlock through the zipper pulls. A small cable could be used to lock a case to an object if the need is felt. CD sleeves also fit DVDs! Or DEA-VEA-DEAs as David Penn would say. If traveling and desiring to work on new material, DVDs may be kept with one's props.

I generally keep 4 kennedy halves with me. I don't like the clink in my pocket, so I initally cut a discarded tyvec fedex envelope down and supergluded it into a small coin envelop with 2 compartments for 2 coins each. I'd put a rubber band around it to keep the coins from sliding out. Pefect.

Well...I lost that little pouch and ended up buying a small plastic pill case at the local drug store:

http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&q=pill+case&gs_upl=80l487l1l782l3l2l0l1l1l0l227l508l0.2.1l4l0&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.,cf.osb&biw=1124&bih=585&wrapid=tlif132457441359110&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=17954532828340215073&sa=X&ei=3GbzTt6CH-Lz0gHl9pmyAg&ved=0CIkBEPICMAE#

That pill box works but is a bit bulkier in my pocket than I like, so I'm going to make another pouch from a tyvec envelope.

My only gaffs are some "Blackout" coins. I keep them in the plastic container that they came in, both for storage and use. My regular performance coins are just kept in the watch pocket of my jeans.

The $1.99 solution - buy some breath mints that come in a tiny metal box. Eat the mints and glue some felt that you have left over from another homemade solution to the top and bottom of the inside. Some of the metal cases actually look nice and make it look like you are pulling out collector's or rare coins that can't possibly be gaffed.

I inch by 1 inch compartments.i have 3 of them and they work
