Barrie Richardson combines the "holding the ends" knot beautifully with his "knot that unties itself". It is found in his book Act Two and Volume One of his DVD series, as "The Impossible Knot Routine".
Great combination! Andre

Pop, You know your stuff! Many a time I have found myself under those situations and ropes saved me each one of those times.
Just to note: The let go and regrasp doesn't happen fast.....it is done smoothly with cover. I used to do it at the bar when asked to come out from behind and I had enough people to be on chairs , lieing on the floor and every angle covered (so they thought) and they could not catch it. Bryan
Oh sure, I can spell "Antidisestablishmentarianism", but I can't type t-h-e.

I really enjoyed Pop Haydn's posts, above!
Jay Marshall got me "involved" in working hospitality suites, back in the early '70s. I, too, learned how "useful" that G.W. Hunter's "Impossible Knot" was! A few extra lengths of rope, and, a bit of showmanship, could easily get the whole room INVOLVED! The move of taking the "set up" rope from the spectator's wrists, and "automatically" tying the knot, was always very effective! I could borrow an EXPENSIVE ROLEX, put in "on" the rope and do the bit, while pointing out that, if I let go of an end of the rope, the watch would "hit the floor", was very effective! (The watch, of course, would end up IN the knot!) I spent 39 summers, staffing Boy Scout Camps. Scouts use knots, and are usually familiar with rope and knots. A 4' length of rope was ALWAYS girth hitched to my belt. (G.W. Hunter's Impossible Knot, and a few others, were most useful, at campfires! I "worked" two National Jamborees for the BSA, in the early '80s, in a "trade show" for "BOYS LIFE MAGAZINE". --I was glad that I had learned "Hunter", as a teenager!

I think you guys are talking about the bit where you tie a knot in a rope without(?) letting go of the ends. It was taught to me by the local magic shop owner as a kid.
Just a few months ago, I learned that if you really don't let go of the ends, you end up with a slip knot, that works great for pulling a knot off the rope. Don't know the formal names for these effects, but they work magically. |

Hull's "Fifteen Minutes Witi A Piece Of Rope" (long ago out of print). BTW, The late Karrell Fox used the "slip knot" bit, that you mentioned, on an auto show tour, back in the '80s. He got on a plane in Detroit with a hunk of rope in his pocket, and THAT'S ALL THAT HE DID FOR THE TRADE SHOW TOUR! His fee was a "bit" over $1000.00 per day, plus per diem!

It should be done SLOWLY, VERY SLOWLY!!! (Forget about "the hand is quicker than the eye".) Someday, if I have a free moment, I'll write up a few notes on Hunter's Knot.

Mr.Dick Oslund, could you share your thoughts on how best to build a Trick script. How many times to repeat the trick. I start with the theme: do as I do. Thank you for clarifying that the main phase of the trick is to do slowly and forget about the speed. * I often see a photo of David Copperfield performing this trick, but not once he was not shot on video.

Rope material, which so often depends on topology, is difficult to write about. Perhaps the BIG challenge is COMMUNICATIONS! For example, few magicians know the difference between a "loop" and, a "bight"! About 20 plus years ago, the late Karrell Fox used the "Impossible Knot" for his bookings on the annual AUTO SHOWS in the USA. He left home with a bit of rope, a trifle more than one meter long. He did the Impossible with the move we are discussing, for the entire tour. At the time, trade shows were paying about $1,000 per day, plus hotel, meals, and first class plane fare.
