OK, got a question. I was told the cards are Mandolin, but you can use regular bikes. What I want to know is if the gimmicks are readily available or specially made for this effect. I really don't want to buy something that will just wear out, I have too many of those already.
Thanks.

They are playing cards so they are not designed to last forever, I have used mine a lot since Magic Llive and they are still in good shape. I hope this helps. Any other concerns please feel free to send me a PM. It is a GREAT routine in my opinion.

What's different about this routine, compared to say, some of Gordon Bean's monte routines which are also stand up routines?

Paul, it's pretty different than Temptation. I really wanted to like Temptation but I find the plot way too confusing. Even for me and I'm doing the trick!

I did actually use it for a while, it played well. I didn't find the PLOT confusing, but it takes a while to master the sequence of moves. It's one of those you need to be doing all the time or you'll forget, there's no way I could pick it up and do it now. But the reason I learned it was BECAUSE no table was used.
Of course now I'm back to the easy way out, of using a four card monte and an EC lol, or my own "Not Another Three Card Trick".
I'll have to look for a video dem of the GT routine.

Paul, part of the problem for me was that all of the cards are the same color. I don't know, though. Maybe I need to revisit it. Might like it now.

I loved Temptation when it came out, I own it and thought it would be a big hit, but I seemed to be the only one.
I do agree, the different colors/suit card may be a big difference maker. I was interested in knowing if the Gaffs where trick specific or if they were something I can purchase more easily in bulk. I am all about bulk.

Cameron, I have Temptation - just picked it up a week ago - and I don’t find the plot quite as confusing as some others, e.g., Bob Farmer's Bammo Monster Monte. While Bammo does use both red and black, they are all aces and I find having one of three aces moving up and down the packet to be not so "amazing" as some of the other Monte effects I have. And at first blush, Temptation doesn’t appear to be all that confusing... but once I really get into it maybe my tone will change!
Thank you.

Unfortunately, I have to say I am very dissapointed with the customer service from Kozmo Magic ;-(
I ordered 2 x sets of replacement cards for the Stand Up Monte almost a month ago and paid on the spot with PayPal.
Not received the cards or any communication as yet. I have emailed Kozmo twice (on the same email address as used
with Paypal so I know its live) and have not even received the courtesy of a one line reply or acknowledgement.
I have no cards and Kozmo has my money!
Anyone have any ideas as to how I can resolve this?
Thanks

Take up the dispute with Paypal fella - you should be covered as one of their features is 'Buyer Protection'. If they experience a similar lack of response from the seller, then they should refund your account with the monies you've paid.
I've only ever raised one dispute with Paypal - for non-receipt of goods via Ebay. They resolved the issue and made a full refund within 48 hours; very impressive!
Just to add that I've previously asked via the Café to start a 'Blacklist' of these kind of people - but clearly during these times of sue anyone/anytime, I can fully appreciate their concern that such a list could potentially bring legal proceedings.

Kozmo lives in a section of New York that was devastated by a flood. I think he lost much of his home and this disaster has had an impact on his business. He is on the Café periodically and you might also be able to reach him via Reel Magic. I also had a customer service issue and once he understood the problem fixed it immediately. Once he becomes aware of your issue, based on my experience, he will want to rectify it.

Hi Whiteoak,
Thanks for the news. If this is the case then I can more than understand the problem. Compared to such issues magic and $20 bucks is not that important.

Guys,
I need some help...
I'm a hobbyist magician and performed at a Golf Club cocktail / charity evening over the weekend - 14 tables with 8-10 people on each table. I opened with the Stand Up Monte on each table and for the majority of tables it down really well. However, on 3 tables I had some spectators who were being deliberatley awkward. On the first Monte Move when I asked the question 'where's the Queen?' they pointed at the card in my hand and not the one in their hand. I know I executed the move almost perfectly so there is now way they could have seen anything untowards. Does any one have a clever come back line or bit of patter for this type of situation? I don't want to be smart or clever or insult anyone but just have a quick response ready if needed in the future. Just something that would allow me to raise a laugh and then carry on with the routine. Any help on this would be appreciated.
Thanks. TGR

TGR,
I never perform monte effects as challenges but rather "something that happened to me." If you have a few slightly inebriated spectators that can exacerbate the problem. Monte effects IMHO are a special challenge because there is a "sting" to them and audiences already feel "challenged" in a game of wits with "regular" magic.
By making the effect something that happened to me, it allows the audience to share in the story and watch the magic. John Bannon writes about removing the "challenge" in Chop Cup routines and I think his thoughts are germane here. If you have Impossibilia, read his thoughts in the effect titled Chop2.

Hi Vlad,
Thanks for the reply - much appreciated. I understand exactly where you are coming from due to the fact the spectators are being 'challenged' it puts a different perspective on things compared to 'normal' or passive magic where the spectators just have to watch or simply sign a card etc.
I will try and get hold of John Bannon's work and have a read.
Once again, many thanks.

Hi, just to re enforce Vlads point I do the same kind of thing with the Colour (14$) Monte routine. I relate a story about what happened to me when I first saw this and it takes out any challenge or confrontation for the spectators as its you getting it wrong not them. I find this approach to magic generally means that I very rarely get any heckling or smart alec comments because my whole demenour is non-confrontational.
On a similar note if I approach a table and there's someone there who I think may be trouble I often find they make a comment because actually they feel threatened or insecure so in that case I try to make them feel relaxed by saying something like " I wont pick on you because you look like a bit of a card sharp to me" obviously this is not the case but it usually has the effect of getting them on your side. I have sevearl put downs that I can use but I only do so as a last resort and by that time hopefully the rest of the crowd is on your side.
Regards Steve..........

Hi topchange,
thanks for the reply. Yep I think the story approach or 'cautionary tale' is the way to go. No threat or confrontation - just an explanation.
Many thanks.

This is such a good point! As the good trial attorneys say "never ask a question to which you don't know the answer". I am just getting into SUM, but have done Skinner's UM for years. I long ago developed a poem-story that leads the specs through the routine without asking them where they think the Ace is. I find that a much better, and safer, presentation.

Dave-
Here is the best way I can put it:
1. No knuckle-busting moves of any sort
2. Complex routine of turning over cards and showing only what you want to show.
So, I would say a "non-card guy" could really go to town with this, after lots of practice with the routine so that you absolutely KNOW what each hand is doing and where each card is. The good news is, you don't have to learn difficult card moves.
I have done Ultimate Monte (Skinner) for years, but I am going to learn this, as you can show the whole card and in my opinion it is an excellent routine...

Hi Dave,
It's a super routine! As previously said no real difficult sleights or card moves. However, it requires practice, practice, practice to get the moves and routine down pat. One wrong move and the gig is over! It took me about a week to get where I was confident in performing it. The patter is very important and whilst this can be rehearsed it needs practice on live spectators. I would most certainly recommend it.
