Last night I went prospecting for new gigs, as luck would have it, the second place I walked in to was having a hypno-show.
"Great" I thought, "maybe I´ll learn something or see a new skit I haven´t yet thought of", perhaps I could talk to the hypnotist about what his rates are so that I don´t screw the market by going too low on price. There´s plenty of business around here for both of us (and a few more).
As I stood there watching, I became rather horrified as I saw demonstrations of catalepsy:
1) Full body catalepsy - volunteer suspended face-up over two chairs (little lady, probably weighing around 50 kilos) and then the hypnotist (in the region of 85 to 95 kilos) proceeded to kneel on her and bounce up and down.
2) Arm catalepsy - first the volunteer was pinched hard by the hypnotist, and when he seemed satisfied that he had anaesthesia in the arm, another volunteer from the audience was invited to bite the same young lady on the arm. The indentations left on the arm were then "showed off" to the audience.
I literally couldn´t believe what this guy was doing, he´s been at it for around 8 years and I was amazed that he hasn´t yet had an "accident" or drawn blood.
What´s the most irresponsable stunt you´ve ever seen someone pull with a hypnotized (or not!) volunteer?
If you never fail, you're not trying hard enough.

Well known UK hypnotist letting someone run outside of the room he was performing in, looking for a lost body part.
Rule #7 Do not let them run.
Rule #8 Do not do lost body parts.

There is a video floating around about where the guy on his first show (oh and it is APARANT IT IS HIS FIRST SHOW.) deceides to lay down a volunteer on the bar room floor he is working. Turns out she has fussed vertabre and seconds later she starts SCREAMING! Irresponsible? Hard to say, but it turned out not so good.

I saw a young hypnotist convince an audience that he couldn't wake up a subject. He went on for 20 min or so, apparently he ran out of material, "trying to wake" the individual and saying the paramedics would need to be called if he didn't succeed.

Surely finishing a bit early is better negative publicity than having people think you are so incompetent you can't wake people up again? Who would volunteer for his next show if they thought that they might not wake up again?
Seriously what goes through some people's heads? When is coming across as incompetent ever a good idea in a hypnosis show?

Body catalepsy on chairs then stand on them not hypnosis in the first place just stupidity. A lot of people are dumb and don't realize the risks they take.

Lost body parts are fine if you make it funny for them but if you are under licence in the UK then you probably can't do them. Running is fine inside a designated area. As is jumping all over a TV presenter shouting I Love You!
Body catalepsy shouldn't be dangerous but is when people start putting weight on them.
If you get people up who have something wrong physically then you need to have a good luck at your schpeel at the start of the thing.

You should address the physical aspect of the show in your pretalk. I usualy state : the second ctiteria for participating in the show is you must be free from all physical injury, anything that would keep you from moving about comfortably and most importantly safley at all times"

Growing up, I was strongly urged away from hypnosis due to an incident my aunt had experienced "way back" in high school, when she was convinced that martians were attacking. Doesn't sound that bad to begin with, but apparently she either filled in some grizzly details herself, or the hypnotist went /way/ overboard, because it was quite traumatic. (For her, as well as for her family watching.)
