I just finished copyrighting a book I wrote, The Book of Destiny
In the past you would fill out a form which took about 5 minutes and send it with two copies of your books, sheet music etc. to the Copyright Office.
Now you can file your claim through https://eco.copyright.gov
and it will take you a lot longer to navigate through their system. Rather than having you fill out one form on-line all at once you instead will enter the title, click continue, wait for it to register the info, then do that over and over again (10 times). When you pay the $35 fee you are then sent to another website that is equally poorly designed and somehow managed to accept my credit card payment despite numerous glitches. Still, I have to mail the books the old fashioned way to the Copyright Office. The only advantage is the copyright is sort of registered when you pay them the money and a month or so later you get the certificate. In reality, the moment I wrote on my manuscript Copyright 2011 Larry Barnowsky it was legally copyrighted (but not registered).

I just received the actual copyright certificate for The Book of Destiny and it took two months which is not bad for the government. Still, they need to get someone to improve the multiple problems with their website.

I don't want to sound mean, but I don't think it's good form to diss a website for bad design when your own could use some design mojo itself.

On the contrary, you are sounding unfair. You are comparing a home made website that I created to one the US Government with all its resources created. I don't claim my website has the bells and whistles of ones done by pros. I am not a website designer but it does work and when you click the Paypal icon the order goes through. Despite the "bad design" of my website, I've managed to successfully ship thousands of products all over the world from it.
