Because I am only young I am not able to afford Morgan or Peace dollars. What do you think are coins that are good to use that I can easily acquire and have gaffs made for?

Ike dollars are not that expensive. There are also replica Morgan coins with matching gaffs.
A search in the forum will help you a lot.

I like the Ike Dollar coins, because a Johnson Expanded [ is only $60, and it's great!

Hey, just thought of something relative to this...Long time ago I came across something I've been using as a holdout for years now. It's not the real usage of the thing, like keeping coins in those black zip holders meant for digital media cards weren't meant for holding coins but magicians came to use them for that because they work sorta well. Anyway, this thing is a money clip really, a magnetic one that holds these replica Morgans very well, that is if the replica Morgans are attracted to magnets and most are I think. They hold perfectly to this thing. It's wrapped in leather and you simply open it and place in your back pocket and you're ready to go. Someone gave it to me long, long ago, it's an old product and was made by Cole Haan. It was sorta expensive (like about $50 bucks - YIKES!) but I found a few cheaper alternatives around now that are basically the same thing:

*And in the name of real ECONOMY, here is a much cheaper version of what looks like the same thing pretty much...Seems well worth it at these prices.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/EEL-SKIN-MAGNETIC-BILL-HOLDER-MONEY-CLIP-WALLET-BLACK-/160619035803?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0

**A really nice and even smaller version:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/BLACK-LEATHER-MONEY-CLIP-Holder-Magnetic-Compart-MC4-/130645618560?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0

Young Hughdini here (and perhaps many others) might find this a cheaper alternative toward the same end. Nice addition to a set of replica Morgans or any coins/ ['s / etc. made to be attracted to a magnet. And this little thing is really pretty neat & slick.

Oh, and welcome Hughdini to the Café.

I still have Eisenhower (Ike's) available for those who need them.

Why call it common sense when it's so rare ?

Go with Eisenhower Dollars, they cost about 1.30US each at coin shops.
If you live in the USA you should be able to get a nice set of post 1972 Eisenhower Dollars from your local coin shop, and they should cost you less than $10.00US for the set. I paid less than $8.00 for my 5 post 1972 Eisenhower coins.
The silver Eisenhower's will def cost you quite a bit more.

What are the large coins that Ponta The Smith uses? Despite knowing quite a lot about coins I cannot recognize the coins. In fact not only am I a magician I am also a coin collector as well, which makes it very difficult not to put the silver coins into my collection.

The Ponta the Smith dvd comes with 4 replica Morgans and a chinese coin.

The replicas that I got, are really not bad quality. They look feel, and work like Morgans..

Take a look at what are called Brown Ikes and Blue Ikes. They are 40% silver. You can see some copper along the edge on the Blue Ikes, but (in my experience) not on the Brown Ikes.

They are significantly more expensive than standard Ikes, but significantly less than Morgan silver dollars. But, they are absolutely beautiful. Take a look and see if they are an option you might like.

Here is some more info:

"Eisenhower Dollars were produced in 40% silver between 1971 and 1974 in both Uncirculated and Proof. The uncirculated silver dollars were packaged in pliofilm inside a blue envelope. The proof silver dollars were encapsulated in a hard plastic case inserted in a brown box. These silver Ike dollars were sold directly to collectors by the Mint and were not included in the Proof and Mint sets issued in those years."

My ex-cat is named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

There are nothing prettier (in my opinion) or better feeling in the hand than real Morgan dollars, but the important thing for someone starting out isn't what kind of coin it is so much as the size and weight- so replicas or Eisenhowers are fine to start.

Also, real Morgans can still be had for under 30$ if you are patient and look around.

I swear by an accessory similar to what Mb describes for my coin work. It's absolutely my favorite and most carried magical helper. I've gone so far as to have actual Morgans altered to work with the gizmo- so listen to the man!

Hey, this is a pretty good deal too, Mogars Magical Morgans and ex-[ set. Clever as I had always wondered why other craftsmen didn't go ahead start making the replica gaffs to these replica coins...Smart! Nice price for a versatile set that really no one will no the difference (or care), not if they're watching the magic as they should be. No one cares how much you pay for your coins, they just care about what you do with them. Just check under "Coins." Mogar makes great stuff.

I don't think that would be possible. Blue Ikes are "uncirculated" and Brown Ikes are proof coins. So both coins were never circulated.

Hughdini,

depends on many things: your performing style, budget, the size of your hands, and what you are able to perform. Those come to mind off the cuff. Everyone has their own opinion but what matters is YOU. ALthough its the best to work with silver (my opinion), they are expensive and its horrible to lose them. I had 4 mint condition peace dollars knicked from me in a magic shop! I was furious! Performance wise, borrowing others peoples coins and doing magic with them will seem the most natural. Espically if you can slip your shell onto someone's quarter...ohhhh, that's magical!!!

Man, Nick, that pained me to hear someone took your Peace Dollars. Grrrr. Did you replace them?

Funny thing, I had the opposite happen working with Walking Liberties. The spectator didn't believe they were actual silver! I didn't have to worry about them being taken!

Yes I ended up replacing them....fortunately my friend who had a surplus gave me a deal. the lesson was/is clear to me: be carefull of the value I place on objects. literally they can be gone in a blink.

Bet that was one of the Ponta Counterfeit DVD's from overseas sold on the Bay and they are the only DVD's I've ever seen with coins. The fake stolen DVD's that's sold as Ponta the Smith DVD is a pirated mini disc.

I purchased the original Ponta DVD and it did not come with coins, and was a normal sized copyrighted DVD, not a fake mini.

Ponta's DVD does not come with coins.
FACT.

I once bid (and won the a bid) for some magic DVD's on ebay. However, I noticed the location of the products were in Malaysia so I emailed the guy and asked if the DVDs were originals. He was honest enough to reply back and let me know they were copies. I asked him to cancel the transaction since I was not aware they were copies.....and he did so with no questions asked. Some of these internet stores advertise the products in a way that makes it very difficult to know if they are knock-offs or not.

As for the purpose of this thread, I would recommend any young (or not so young) magician (who is looking to buy coins) to balance and prioritize (1) what he/she can afford vr.s (2) his/her performance character. I would also recommend that the person think about how he/she wants to perform coin magic (ie..close up vr.s parlor? Magic in the hands of the spectator vrs stand up presentation style, etc...). This will also help to determine if dollar size coins work better than half dollar size coins or visa versa. I use to perform mostly walk around and very close up so I used mostly half dollar sized coins. Then I migrated to parlor/ stand-up and thus transitioned to dollar size coins. Now, this is not to say that larger coins will not work close up or smaller coins will not work for stand up. However, It wouldn't hurt to put some thought into this.
