Though I have written many times about the importance of getting involved in theatre to help ones magic shows, I have not been in a professional production for several years. Our church had auditions for an Easter play. In the past I have been most comfortable with character roles which allowed bits of comedy. I broke through my fears and auditioned for a play (From here to Emmaus)which is more on the "heavy side". If I get in I will gain much knowledge. If I don't get in I will also learn.

Well, the auditions are over and we had our first blocking rehearsal. The play is a bit diferent as it focuses on Thomas and a parrellel character in modern times. The modern character is a non believer whose father has just died. The play was written by Pastor Dave McCllellan.
After the blocking I thought about how we as magicians, must re-block in many of the different venues we present.

Harris- great idea. I too am in an Easter play at our church www.DiscoverLighthouseChurch.com - but not much of a stretch for me. I play the role of the courtroom judge in a play written by our pastor. The premise is the historical validity of the resurrection. I saw "The Phantom of the Opera" at Portage Central High School in Portage, Michigan last night-reminded me afresh to have a similar passion for Gospel magic- should at least be on a par with those students appearing in a high school production.

Even if you don't get a role onstage much too can be learned from working backstage on a production. In high school I took drama and stagecraft classes and spent just as much time, if not more running curtains, lights and setting props than I did in onstage roles.
I am frequently suprised by how little (if any) theatrical experience most magicians have had.
I contend that we are both atheists.
I just believe in one fewer god than you do.

Wolf's Magic is back in business- see www.WolfsMagic.com Kif has pretty much everything ever made by them. They carry some new Payne items- all first class stuff. Only downsize is you have to order quickly as Chance Wolf seems to sell out pretty much everything he ever manufactures. I own at least three excellent items made by Wolfs Magic, and all three are no longer available.

I started in the world of theatre as first a "prop guy", then moved into the wonderful world of sound. Back then we used reel to reel.
I remember my early attempts to edit our radio shows with a blade. As I recall, I quickly decided to leave that part to someone else. Another of my perks is to have friends and collegues with great knowledge of the editing process, both in writing, blocking and media.

We are in our third week of rehearsal. The feedback from the directors, stage mangager and other actors is proving very valuable. During Saturday's rehearsal, in a fit of anger I bang my fist onto the table. As I did it, one of the smaller wooden bowls was bounced in a larger bowl in the middle of the table. Perfect for "March Madness", and released some tension.

I have been meditating on the words...cast your anxiety on to the Lord...and this has helped a lot. Also getting off script has made for big changes. (off script happens when your lines are learned...which is not as easy as it was 30 years ago)

Our hard work paid off. We presented it at the church on Palm Sunday.
The first scene opens with the disciples in the upper room. Prior to going on stage, we talked about how we would feel if we didn't have Jesus in our life. Pretty sad and depressed. He took on the sins of the world and separate himself briefly from God. For one that was with God for an eternity, I can see how he would sweat blood.
Next week we celebrate "He is risen"....aka Easter.
