Hi everyone - I was wondering what you use as fuel for fire illusions on stage, for use with torches, etc.
Lighter fluid works great but evaporates very quickly.
Are there any alternatives that you can recommend? Thanks!

I normally use lighter fluid because it burns cleanly and brightly, I've used lamp fuel, but it can be a bit sooty, and tastes bad for eating fire.. (also give me bad gas)
I try to keep any loaded torches in a plastic bag covering until I know I'm going to use them.

I second the Coleman camping fuel/White Gas. It is what I use, and it works great. It has nice bright flames, it is easy on your torches, and it is not very explosive.
If you find that it burns too hot for you, give kerosene a try. (I'll admit my experience with it is limited, however.)
Stay away from any kind of alcohol, because it can numb your mouth and lips if you hold it in for too long.

For a spiker effect, what would you guys use?! I just bought Brett Daniels' fire-spiker illusion and I'm about to start rehearsing with it!

Try Coleman or white spirit.
This will work well.

Washing Benzine/Cleansing Benzine (Don't know the exact name in English), I love it!!
It leaves practically no smoke, no smell, to me it's a great advantage that it lights by just a spark.
I've seen artists using Diesel and Petrol, it smells horrible, leaves thick black smoke and you need to keep a lighter to it for about 10 seconds before it ignites (not good if you know how chaotic it can be backstage)
Only downside, it's quite expensive compared to diesel, petrol or regular gasoline, I'd guess compareable to lighter fluid, but you can buy this is large bottles. Definately try it, it's clear as water, smells like benzine, but no smoke, no smell and quick ignition :)

@Laurens Malter:
When do you soak the spiker tips? Before the show or just before the illusion?
If you do it before the show starts, could there be problems with evaporation and an explosive air-fuel mixture?

Benzine is a fuel made from combo of gasoline and a naptha. Vapors can be explosive so I wouldn't use this if I were you.
Benzene is a carcinogen not Benzine. They are two different chemicals.
Acetone burns cleaner and is safer then Benzine. I would use Acetone.
That is my Bachelors in Chemistry Opinion.

An important issue is evaporation. Could you please tell an approximate time all liquids you have suggested can be "open air" before igniting?
Thanks.

Sorcerer,
This has much to do with other
circumstances, as there are
temperature and humidity
at the location.
It's trial and error; learning by doing.

John, of course it depends of ambiental temperature, humidity, material of torch, surface exposed etc... so I asked an APPROXIMATE ammount of time
For example, lighter fluid can stay in a torch very few minutes before it evaporates, and kerosen holds for hours. So I would like to know what happens with other fluids Café guys have experienced, just roughly, of course
Thanks in advance

Theatre F/X used to sell "Pyro Fuel". I'm not sure what it is made from or how well it works, but it might be worth looking into.

Coleman Fuel does not evaporate very fast. I know from experience. It's a long story. One more vote for Coleman Fuel.
