I am trying to teach myself various routines cups and balls, zombie ball, dove care etc.. Is there any place I can go like itunes for example where I can just pay to download instructional videos. I know I can just search around the net for youtube vids, but I was just wondering if there is anything popular and quicker rather then ordering DVDs from Ebay and suppliers etc...

First, keep in mind what you are asking. "IF" there were a prevelance of such sites the mystery of magic would be quickly lost. For a few bucks and a few minutes time you could find the secrets that make the art of magic possible. Is that really what you want? If so, why take up magic as a hobby or a profession when it is being exposed and explained everywhere you look? Why bother to learn the methods if eveyone that you perform for says "I know how you did that."? That is no fun for you or your audience.

That being said, yes there are sites where you can download the latest magic effects for instant gratification, but of course you will still need to practice if you intend to present them. I believe some of the sites advertise here on the Café.

I'm an old guy, around since before the advent of the personal computer, but I would highly recommend learning from books with a follow-up of DVDs. The book experience makes you think about the presentation more than watching someone elses performance. The more involved you are in the learning process, the faster and better you will learn. You will form questions that you will need to answer for yourself that will put you miles ahead in the game.

There are lots of places to buy DVD's but I suggest L&L. Their prices are reasonable, have free shipping and they run great BOGO specials every month. Buy 1 DVD and get a set of 4. That's hard to beat. I would also avoid buying DVDs from E-bay unless you know for sure what you are buying. Not everyone is honest.

Be sure to sign up for L&L's emailing list - that's where you get notice of the special deals.

Buy these books on amazon (or whatever online second-hand bookseller you prefer). I've quoted the prices I saw online just now:
$1.35 The Amateur Magician's Handbook, by Henry Hay
$2.25 Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic
$1.43 Modern Coin Magic, J.B. Bobo
$2.50 The Royal Road To Card Magic, Jean Hugard

Then check the L&L site for good, cheap DVDs. An especially good general start would be "The Secret Seminars Of Magic" Series by Patrick Page, at $12.50 a pop. These are old videos, but it's excellent teaching and advice. Their "World's Greatest Magic" series is good too.

I have to be honest I don't work well with books when it comes to routines.. I find the DVDs or vids help more, maybe I am just a visual learner. I am on that L&L site now I like this. So thank you for this. Geeesh I paid like $35.00 for that Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic book.. I wish I knew about this site earlier.

I find naving the RRTCM DVD and the book is very helpful. Sometimes the book gives you the extra details that you didn't catch from the DVD. At other times the DVD is just what you need to clarify something in the book that seems confusing.

Get a used copy of the tarbell books on ebay. You will never need a DVD or any other book.

almost EVERYTHING can be traced back to an entry in tarbell - and its what the pros putting stuff out now learned from.

Harry...
Other than your own books and DVDs (which are excellent), which books would you recommend to newbies that will help them speed up the learning curve? I think a lot of folks would be interested in your thoughts.

Cheers,
Steve

Don't engage Mr. Lorayne - besides did you not know that it's hip to be illiterate nowadays with indolence coming in a close second, it's the rage man.

Actually, at this point, I'm genuinely curious if he covers dove magic in any of his books.

Certainly Tarbell, Steve, and RRTCM, Encycl. of Card Tricks, the bound volumes of Hugard's Magic Monthly, Expert Card Technique, most of Marlo's books, and on and on. Oh, and Encycl. of Dove Magic for the Burnaby Kid!

Ok. So it turns out Tarbell is a great recommendation for the original poster after all. Good to know.

Yeah, that's what I said - mmreed is right - "You'll never need a DVD or any other book." See - that makes all my work for naught. What is it that you don't understand, burnaby? (Oh, his remark also makes Marlo's work, Hugard's work, Vernon's work, etc., "for naught" - waste of time. (Oh, don't know if it's a "great" recommendation, unless the OP is interested only in doves.)

Harry, that's an excellent start, and I thank you for it. What about more modern magicians? I know that I appreciate the work of guys like John Bannon, Paul Cummins, Lance Pierce and so on. Whose work in the current crop do you particularly like, and who would you recommend?

Cheers,
Steve

That's great, Harry. I appreciate your help in recommending a number of superb magicians, both past and present, whose work can help all of us. Including, of course, your own.

Cheers,
Steve

I did ONLY Card Magic and ONLY used Harry's books when I started, 'cause I like his style of Card Magic. Used ONLY his material for five or six years. I can still kill with a deck of cards but now prefer Coin Magic, for whatever reason. You can not go wrong with Harry's stuff.

I own a cookbook by Better Homes & Gardens (TRUE!). It was bought by monthly installments, and was completed years ago. It stays on my kitchen shelf where it is handy and I do use it frequently. It covers breads, pies and cakes. It covers beef, chicken, and lamb. It does fruits and vegetables, jams and jellies, casseroles and meatloafs.

I really don’t ever need to buy another cookbook. It’ll take me a lifetime to perfect all the things that this book will teach me.

HOWEVER, I also use a book on Gluten Free cooking. Have one on Crock Pots. I have one for Microwaves. I have one for Non-Cooked meals. I even have one for Vegan (I don’t know why!)

Each one of those handles something specific that I like a lot, AND that isn’t listed in the BH&G book. Do I NEED those other books? No, actually, I could live on ramen noodles. But for a beginner, who’s main interest (besides learning magic) is to not blow his whole wad on stuff that he doesn’t know whether or not he’ll ever be able to use, the “Complete Course” or whatever just makes more sense. (Oops, did I just metaphorically mix something?)

AFTER THAT, when he’s a little better targeted, Harry’s books may be the best investment, or not, depending on his direction. I own some of Harry’s stuff, and it’s great, but I’d never consider giving Rim Shots to a beginner. Sorry, Harry.

I had responded to you, DWR, but I don't see that response here. I probably did it wrong, I'm a lousy computer person. Just wanted to make it clear tht I didn't write Rim Shots for beginners - but it's not a bad step for beginners to move toward intermediate level. H.

I remember one person writing to tell me that one of the effects (Amazing Prediction) in that book changed his life and got him really into magic.

Wha'? Harry does rim shots, paradiddles and three-stroke rolls! He taught me to drum right off the bat. And I didn't mind diving in.
