I was watching "World's Greatest Magic Cigarette Through Quarter" and a really cool handling I saw was Garrett Thomas's handling (Garrett Thomas uses a pen instead of a cigarette but you can just as easily switch the pen for the cigarette). I think a great way to present this trick is to cross David Roth's handling with Garrett Thomas handling while also throwing in some of your own ideas (I like how David Roth displays the cigarette through the quarter after the cigarette has penetrated the quarter). But Garrett Thomas has a great handling for this trick and would highly recommend taking some of David Roth's ideas on this trick and Garrett Thomas's ideas to help in coming up with a great presentation for this trick.

Sorry but what is the point of this post - unless you are going to tell us what the particular presentation was (and why it was so effective)?
With all due respect, a pen thru coin presentation is a hardly ground-breaking new event of magic.

Karrell Fox had the best presentation. Has a coin on top of a bottle. Has a lady grip the coin by the edge holding it sealing the bottle. He tells her to close her eyes. He then pushes a short golf length pencil through into the bottle. When she opens here eye, he tells someone to tell her what happened. The spec says, "He pushed it through the coin."
THIS PLAYS SO STRONG.

The point of the post is to share with other magicians. I am just being careful as not to expose any secret methods, so that's the reason I don't go too much into detail; exposing methods to tricks breaks the forum rules, so I am sure you would understand why I would not go into too much detail, not to mention, others can do the same as I and purchase the DVD that shows the presentations I am talking about (not that I am trying to peddle these DVDs to anybody but I thought some of these presentations were awesome). I have been studying various ways to present this trick and so when I discover something that I think is awesome, I don't think any of the magicians would mind me sharing some of the stuff I have learned without going into too much detail and running the risk of breaking forum rules but give them enough information to "point them in the right direction."
But if it's such a problem, I guess I will be more careful about sharing with others or "pointing them in the right direction" if that big a deal. But it would also be unfair to others who would like to hear what I have to say. After all, this is a place where "magicians help magicians" right? Being a magician is not about being a hoarder of knowledge but part of being a magician is the willingness to share knowledge or ideas with other magicians.

For me, I spend a great deal of time on small pieces of magic trying to make the presentation as awesome as I possibly can. Even if it's not a new ground breaking piece of magic, I like to put forth the work to make it a masterpiece of magic, no matter how small or old the trick may be. Sometimes you can take some of the classics or small pieces of magic, develop new and innovative ways to present or handle it and make it really awesome and totally floor people. Sometimes the classics or small pieces of magic just need updating to modern, new or more innovative presentations to turn a mediocre trick into something that is awesome.

General_Magician, thanks for starting this thread. because of you, Mr. Biro shared something I had never heard of. There's gold in them thar' hills!
I added to a thread once and because it was a few years old, some grouch questioned why I would bring it back to life, as if the information no longer applied. lol.

You'll be surprised at what you'll sometimes find on the "Worlds Greatest Magic" DVDs. Now, I am not a representative of the company that sells or makes these DVDs nor am I an affiliate marketer for them (so I don't get any commissions). I am just one of their customers. I don't make any money from any sales of this particular series of DVDs (but those vendors who actually sell those DVDs make money off of me because I am a customer) in any shape form or fashion, directly or indirectly. Just in my honest, genuine opinion, you will sometimes find some great ideas on this particular series of DVDs. I don't sell DVDs period nor do I make any money from the sale of DVDs at all. I am just a customer.
This particular seris of DVDs is pretty entertaining to watch for me because it's interesting to see what various different magicians come up with (some are good, some are not so good) and the various different presentations for the same idea (example cigarrette through a quarter as an idea which is presented differently by various different magicians all thrown on one DVD). You can also learn a lot about great ways for presenting and performing a specific trick and it shows you that you too can come up with your own presentation which is unique or different from everybody else and you can also see what works and what doesn't work. So, this particular group of DVDs offer ideas to get your own creative mind going to help you come up with your own presentation which is killer for a particular specific trick (idea) that you want to perform really well. Just my two cents.

I've never performed cig through quarter much. I DO remember a very cool gimmick though many years ago. It was a gaffed bic pen that the end was "chopped" and had a gimmicked quarter as well. It had a very cool illusion. Could be shown from both sides before, during, and after the penetration. Anyone else remember it? But for all practicallity, it's pretty hard to beat the Belanger quarter.

I do recall Pete Biro’s comment with the coin and the bottle being explained in one of Worker series by Close. He had also used it in conjunction with Cardtoon along the same lines.
So to the whole crowd thinks he has a normal pack and the actual one participate that is picked to go through the whole effect is completely amazed.
When everyone else asks what happened, it turns into a hilarious story which no one believes of course unless privy.
Great Magic!
Same with coin, cigarette and bottle; that one person holding the coin and bottle will never believe the cigarette actually went through the coin.
We can do some pretty amazing things.

Sounds like one that Al Cohen used to sell. The method was easy and highly deceptive. I'd use it if I could find one.
I have a Belanger gimmick and I could use part of the Garrett Thomas handling with that. It was easy to remember what made the routine so good, because I was experimenting with a certain billet move when I saw it - he used a similar move.

I do believe that's the one Alan! The only gaffed coins I use are a Dean's set which are antiques anyway. Curious if performers are having issues with tricks like this thanks to the US Gov't making so many different quarters these days.

| Pete,
You're right on about Karrell's presentation. It's one I've been doing for years. I posted this description in another thread:
Poka-Cola by Karrell Fox
Another Book, pg 55
Effect: taking a clear bottle you ask a spectator to hold a quarter securely on the top of the bottle with his thumb and finger. You then borrow a cigarette, calling attention to the brand. Your spectator is asked to close their eyes and promise to do two things: hold the quarter tightly and not open their eyes until you tell them to.
With your spectators eyes closed you push the cigarette thru the quarter, allowing it to fall in the bottle. You then have your spectator open their eyes, asking if they moved or turned loose of the quarter. They now turn loose the quarter. Taking it, you place it on the table. You now ask the spectator to look in the bottle and see what's there. "A cigarette". You then proceed to tell them how the cigarette got in there, getting a laugh from the other members of your audience.
This is a great use of the Cigarette-thru-Coin gimmick.

Derek Dingle had great presentation as well, using both the standard cigarette thru quarter and the smashed quarter. It's in the The Collected Almanac.

Omg, Pete Biro, that idea is completely new to me. I love it!
It makes the effect so compelling, and fun for the entire audience.
You could do it with a little marble or something, too.
Or better yet, a marshmallow.
Push the marshmallow through a quarter.
That's even more impossible than a wooden pencil through metal quarter.
