I have been using a rubber duck sitting on my lota bowl and then empty it between other tricks as a running gag. I did a show last night and another performer said I stole his lotta bowl routine (with a monkey doll). Does anyone one know where this routine started. I got it from Presto Johnson in 1978 (with his blessing).

The very first time I ever saw it was when I saw Earl "Presto" Johnson use the gag in about 1970 (maybe as late as 72). Earl had been using that gag for a decade or more by then. Maybe he got it from someone else but it just seems like his type of humor and thinking.

I have seen at least four different performers use the "critter" or doll on top of a Lotta over the decades. they were all younger performers that Presto and I assumed that his idea was simply spreading.

I have never seen anyone do this routine before, but now that you've told me about it, I can't wait to start doing it myself! (Kidding!)

One of the guys in our club uses a baby. His routine is based on the program in High School where girls are given a doll for the week / month etc. and have to keep it with them all he time. I have seen Sam Sadler (Sp) use
a frog.

I've been using a stuffed bunny on a lota beach pail since the beach pails first came out. I thought it was an original idea of mine!

Well, we did a club group show, and I was inventorying what each performer was using. Since I was first and had back-up routines I ran it by the later performers. I said to him I was doing a lotta bowl, and he said he was doing one. I said I would drop it from my segment. He said, to keep it because his routine was "different".
Lo and behold, mine was the running gag (usually I use a rubber duck, but I used a frog that night. Stubbornly, he had his lotta bowl during his segment with a monkey doll on it.
After the show, he came up to me and said he couldn't believe I "stole" his routine he said he has been doing for 60 years.
The guy has credentials and was well known in the sixties. His lackluster delivery told me it was just a throw-away comedy bit for him. Most of his act was a "catalog" act, nothing original.
I took a segment from the show to show the effect. I do 5 pours during the show.

I have seen at least a dozen magicians use the Lota Bowl as a running gag with a doll or animal on it over the last 20 years. Some were from local clubs and some were at conventions and had come from other countries. Some were actually very creative and cute presentations.

I seriously have no idea who came up with it first, but I really think it is quite possible that more than one person would have thought of using it in this manner on their own and not stole it from anyone.

While I know theft of intellectual property runs rampant, I really doubt this falls into that category.

Note: We use lota bowls from time to time but never in this manner, so I am only stating what I think might be the case.

Chris might do it. Chris was a close friend of Presto. I sent Chris a copy of the Presto show I taped years ago.

This is in the Ho Yam book, from the early 40s. "The Elusive Chinese Boy" although the book does not say how the idea was developed

I haven't used a Lotta Bowl in well over 25+ years, but I do remember when I first bought one. The guy behind the counter at the magic shop performed it as the "peeing" gag with a doll sitting on top of it. I bought it and that was how I performed it before taking it out of my show. If I ever put it back in my show, I would have likely done the same type of gag with it. I just always assumed it was a stock presentation as the ONLY routines I've ever seen with a Lotta Bowl pretty much follow that same train of thought.

Chris Capehart does it in his DVD, "Kidding Around." He uses a rather mangy looking doll though.

I was doing this with our SAM school shows in 1960. I borrowed a doll from my next door neighbor when I lived on Desire street in New Orleans. So if you did not do it before 1960 you ripped it from me and I want compensation. My SAM buddy, Ralph Fountain, was the sound man with a tape machine and he played the Sabre Dance every minute in a half during a 10 min. act that made me rush over and empty the lota bowl into a pail. PM me and I;ll give you my mailing address to send the checks.

Looks like you owe the guy from 1957 a check or two. Lol. I think this gag was a natural evolution of thought and probably suggested by the first sellers of the effect. Boys being boys, a good pee joke always works.

yea I have been using a frog for decades. I did not know that this was how others did it using a baby doll or whatever when I first started using the lota bowl.

but my frog now pees on the kids too! that's my favorite part! LOL they go nuts over it.

I only use it in my kid shows not my stage show any more. but its a great prop.

I'll be perfectly honest here; I've not heard of the lota bowl being used this way. I'd love to put the idea into a kids show, but do the parent's ever object to it?

What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?

My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums.

I have never heard of this presentation either, but I live a very sheltered life.

Bob, at the shows I have seen magicians perform it in, I have never felt that anyone was offended. I really don't see why anyone would be, but then again that is coming from a lady magician who has a goose that pees in the middle of the show.

Generally, it is the hit of the show. When I return to the venues, they all ask if I brought the duck.
I phrase the joke in such a way that I never say "pee". I usually say that the duck is my mascott, we don't know what he does, but every once in a while I have to empty the pot.

Thanks folks, you've given me something to think about. I use a routine with flowers in it, but I like the doll/duck/animal of your choice idea.

I have used a doll but the rubber duck worked better because it was a bath toy and could get wet.
Plus I like ducks.
---------It looks like enough magi's have used this, but I really was curious as to who came up with the bit.

This was New Orleans, almost 100 percent of our shows was at Catholic schools, grade and high, with nuns in attendance, and they thought it was a riot. With the garbage on TV these days parents have little to say or do with the upbringing of their children.

Imagine this, a soon to be 74 year old man time travels back to the 1960s trying to remember where did he get something that is being asked about 50 years later. Then it happens, an explanation, a remembrance, this coming from a guy who cannot remember what he had for breakfast this morning. Why did he decide to put a doll on top of a blue lota bowl? Remember I mentioned the little girl from next door, the kid that one of my many ex-wives baby sat - she was about 7 or 8 and she had a doll, a doll that peed. You stick a toy water bottle in the dolls mouth and the doll wets itself. That's where the idea came from. I did a little background check, dolls that wet themselves and have tears have been around since the 1930s. It may very well be I read about the gag somewhere and I thought about using it with this doll. Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking with it. Now I need a drink to forget about that ex-wife you made me think about.
BTW, I was a big fan of George McCathy back in those days and that gag may very well be in one of his books that I no longer have. There was a few other magic gag books around too, so it may be in something, like the old Tops magazines.

Hey Sparticus, I'm an about to be a really old soul at the tender age of sixty-four; and my wife still loves me, per the Beatles. I used that line twice today!

Thanks for sharing that with us. I've always been enamored with older folks, now especially, since I are becoming one. You have my respect sir.
