My original comment involved the 72 year old guy who started doing shows in 57'. So, the spark of innovation must have been something in the water or something in Tops magazine. It sure is fun to track these things down.
I am convinced that this routine was not originated by him.
He was on TV back then and performed in Tenn. and Ohio.

The comedy of it is, not to actually say "pee". The doll sits on the pot, and every once in a while we have to empty the pot. The spectator draws their own conclusion.

Did you get his name?
years ago, a guy came up to my father in SC and said he stole (i believe it was)
johnny platt's kuma tube routine.
but anyone who knows and seen my father perform he does it the best infact better than Kuma himself.
But then I've seen Dick Oslund perform the water bottle trick exactly like my father, with us in the audience.
To me, It doesn't matter, as long as you entertain the crowd.
Yes everything has an origin, as long as you remember where you got it from or originated it and its documented or noted by many then it's all kosher.
you will remember my name

Well I am a member of the Ask Alexander organization that has access to all those old Tops magazines, Sphinx, Genii and a host of others. I'm going to do a search of the Lota bowl and see what I can come up with. I wish I still had all those McCathy books to look through, plus there was a bunch of funny guys associated with Abbotts that wrote little gag books and stuff to do with props. Gags like this are out there for anyone to take and use. The old Geniis, which I've been perusing lately, has tons of tricks and stuff that has been long forgotten and could very well be pulled from back to the future. And with a little thinking on your part, you can make anything original and new without having to directly steal from someone else. The old Orben books contain a hundred thousand gags, or more, than can be rewritten and brought up to date, thus making them original with you. The same with magic tricks. You don't have to do it the way the instructions say to do it, and you don't have to do it the way the Great John Doe does it. But laziness prevails...

Withe the exception of color monte, I pretty much do something different with every prop I own. With the case of the lotta bowl and doll, it was in my opinion, the brain child of Presto Johnson. His delivery and natural patter were priceless.
In my case, I use a duck, because I love them. And, even then, the words and action make my version unique.
Presto used to say, "you probably figured out that last trick, but I know what has you stumped. That is what does spot do (his dog), we don't know what he does, but every once in a while we have to empty the pot".
Years ago, "BC" before computers and youtube, it was hard to see most of the great performers in action. "road shows" of someone's act would spring up after every original artist left town.
And now, every public domain handling of any prop could be claimed by anyone.

OK, this is my last entry on this subject. I found this is Genii from 1946. After a SAM assembly meeting we usually did a little show with each member participating. This one is from R.I.
Genii, Vol 11, 1946, page 97
Rohode Island Assembly #26. In a after the meeting program Compeer Harrison Jr. did a well thought out routine including the Magazine prediction, a four ace routine, block penetration and a laugh a minute comedy routine using a doll, a lota bowl, tissue paper panties and the No. 1 assembly stooge S.A.M. Klibanoff.
So, this gag was done as early as 1946 and I bet it is in a George McCathy book

After reading the routine in Tales of Enchantment: The Art Of Magic, about the Irish legends and the "wee folk", I am going to purchase a Lota Pitcher from these folks:
http://www.ninedragonpottery.com/About_Us.html
I have some ideas that have nothing to do with the standard gags. Thanks go to Walt Anthony for ideas and further study!

Hi Spartacus! Yeah, his website is under construction. Walt Anthony tells me Nine Dragon's pottery work is among the best. After I pay for the Druid Chest, I'm calling Tom Crecelius!
My guess is this'll be about $100 give or take...

I'll be perfectly honest here; I've not heard of the lota bowl being used this way. I'd love to put the idea into a kids show, but do the parent's ever object to it?

This was New Orleans, almost 100 percent of our shows was at Catholic schools, grade and high, with nuns in attendance, and they thought it was a riot. With the garbage on TV these days parents have little to say or do with the upbringing of their children.
|

I perform kid shows exclusively and use a lota in a couple of my programs to great effect. I had never thought of putting a doll or animal on it as a "pee" joke until I got Chris Capehart's video in which he does use a scraggly doll as a running joke on the lota. Honestly, I thought it was good for a giggle, but not really my style. But reading that so many others have used this gag successfully, I might just try it in an upcoming show!

Nice! A metal one! Looks like a spittoon (No offense)! Thanks Ian!
No these Nine Dragons units are a hand-cast pitcher, and are made to order. The story I have partially made, has a theme. The pottery pitcher is perfect for this. Nice metal Lotas Morrissey is making these days. Sure beats the Zombie ball!

That's right, Harry! I'm getting away from "traditional" and "typical". Walt Anthony has completely changed my thinking on Magic. The Druid's herb Chest was a BRILLIANT break from the traditional "sucker" sliding Die Box. This goes right along with it.
I still haven't called Tom. Gotta do that...

Very nice. I think I'll order one and convince the wife to put my cremation remains in it. That would be neat, a never ending source for cremation dust. You could say the doll has a bad case of gas. Sound effects to follow.....

This thread seems to have evolved into shapes and quality of Lota bowls. My original question was answered and accepted by the magician in question. As far as Lota bowls, the Morrissey is not like a spittoon, there are some that do look like that. I chose the Lota I use because it is easy to pack, has a huge load of water per shot, very inexpensive, and, it most of all fits my ducks' butt.

Ireland's had a Gwendolyn the Duck years ago. This is the one that could pick your card. You could sit that on the lota. A loud quack from the sidelines would cue you to empty the bowl.

Looking for pottery, Stevens Magic sells 2 versions:
Pitcher:
http://www.stevensmagic.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=88_90_56&products_id=111924
Small vase:
http://www.stevensmagic.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=113&products_id=111901
The only problem I see for pottery, is the price and how easily it can be broken. Magic tables are not the most stable tables around. Even reguaar furniture only need a nudge to send thingd flying.
A better idea would be to uses a Morrissey Lota Bowl and paint it like a vase, if you want the clay look, paint it the rustic look, and paint some design or decal it. Many artist can do this, or DIY.
I bet a Zombie base/stand would look great on the bottom of the Morrissey Lota Bowl.
This is Morrissey's large lota, 60 ounce.

Magicians said he had those in stock. Your right about the pottery thing being easily broken. I think I'll get a Morrissy from Magicians if he still has them in stock when I get my next SS check.Never thought about doing a vent thing with Gwendolyn. Senator Crandall demonstrated one for Ireland's during a IBM-SAM get together in New Orleans. He put a blindfold on the duck and that cracked me up.
I wonder if Axtell sells ducks. I just had a good idea.

Ya know I didn't think of that! My new Druid Herb Chest (Sucker Sliding Die Box) could have the same fate! In fact, any valuable on stage whether a prop or otherwise...
Good point. Maybe I'll wait on the Lota...

A lot of people use a doll on top of the Lota Bowl.
I think it would be very difficult to determine who did it first.
Anyone who claims to be the originator had better do their homework first before making such a definitive representation.
