Some tricks seem too clever to figure out ever. I'm curious to hear stories if any of you have ever had a (non magician) spectator figure out: Industrial Revelation? Ultra Gum? CSI Ring? ProMystic tricks? UltraCinese? Timeless? Scotch and Soda?

You mean a spectator without a smart phone, who figured it out on their own?

I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

Lol, yup. I unfortunately figure out IR, but only because I carelessly left the instructions lying out.

Mndude,

I had a spectator figure out Free Will. I find it fools 99% of people but I figured it out when I saw it demoed. A clever spectator who is paying attention to the pronouns does have a shot at figuring it out. Although I use this a lot and it has only happened once (maybe twice). Most people are totally amazed so I keep using it.

My granddaughters - all the time. Sneaky little buggers are at the worst possible angles and to be honest they just seem more focused on basic logic and common sense than most adults.

Of the mentioned effects I only do Industrial Revelation. Noone has ever figured it out at the spot but a few of my friends who has seen it 2-3 times eventually went online to get the secret. They found the matchbox type though, but knew it was the same principle of course.

Here is a great way to prevent premature discovery. Don't EVER call the trick you are doing by name.

Do people really do that? Even before the Internet that was a dumb idea.

Some people DO NOT want to be fooled. So they will watch everything and do not listen. I have some things I perform for those people to relax them. Once they realize you are harmless they start to enjoy the event.

Find that effect and patter and design it especially for them.

If nothing else works cold cock them before the event and finish your act before they wake up.

LOL! Seriously? I dunno if it will do harm or not, but iDeck has its title printed on the box.

I never mentioned this to my audience, and many will miss the word tho. I'm just worried about having them searching the net after they saw me performing it.

At first, it is such a novelty idea and good for the patter. "Here, I bought the very first generation of iPod, all manual and it was called iDeck because.."

Sources like Youtube can be our worst nightmare as there are lots of tricks are being revealed in there. Sometimes when I was looking for a demo of a trick, there will be revealing vids on the right hand side as well

As for IR, no, there hasn't anyone able to figure it out. They always ask for the box and the coin and gave back the block to me. Ha!

I usually put it on their hand, then onto the table (I'm a teacher) and spin some coins on top of it while they're holding the box and the coin I use to penetrate. Some of them will tap the block with the coins but because of the weight, their attention will go back to the box.

And because of our culture here, gaff cards are not for everyone. Some of them will know that there must be some special cards in the deck. Due to the expose of displays we have from some magic shops, even a regular Bicycle decks will be defined as "magicians' cards"

I regularly use MD, Timeless, and IR on a regular basis. No one has ever figured these out.
Not done too bad with my other regular effects either.

Saw a guy recently tell people he was going to perform the "gypsy Thread" like they knew what it was. I even saw a stage guy say "Let me show you my newest illusion. I call it Blammo"

I had the opposite happen once.
A guy (layman) that knew I did magic went by a magic shop and bought a gimmicked coin trick. He then did it for me. I said, "Nice, let me see the coins." I then did some slight-of-hand moves with them and blew him away.

Fun fun fun.

Pete,

That is great thinking my friend. I do very similar things when opportunity presents itself. I laughed when I read your post.

As far as calling an effect by name as some have noticed. I have found once you practice an effect please do yourself a favor and work on your patter. It should be a rule (I always thought it was in magic) that you NEVER refer to an effect by name. Especially in todays world with computers. You might as well reveal the effect if you call it by name. I have been fortunate in that I have not been called out on an effect. I normally make it a point after a performance to actually mingle with the audience for a while. I will ask which effect they found to their liking the most. I have had some say things like "I think I know how you did" this or that, and have even gotten some good ideas on how they think it was done, but they have never gotten it right. Practice your effect and practice your patter and it will reward you many times over.

Good magic to all,

Eric

P.S. Pete my wife and I have to get to Deans shop soon to see you guys again. We had a lot of fun that day and think of you two often.

The first time I did this effect the spectator tried to pull the block apart ! I thought I was going to faint. Luckily the block is kind of tight or I would have been busted. After that close call, I made my block even tighter.

Nail on the head, as they say. Some people DO NOT want to be fooled. So they will watch everything, not the trick just your hands, they watch and have great satifaction of telling you, how you did it, or think you did and not in the least interested about the illusion. They were not fooled and that that. There loss, that's what I think. Still there are so many people that enjoy the art of magic. That in its self tips the balance very well, so not all bad, THE WORLD WOULD BE A DULL PLACE, WITHOUT MYSTERY, can't remember who's quote that's from, but I find it appropriate.

Perhaps magicians should flood YouTube with thousands of ridiculously bizarre or impossibly confusing "exposure" videos ...

A mechanically inclined friend KNEW how IR worked, but COULD NOT get to the bottom of it no matter how hard he tried, because mine is set very tight. But he was right! Could not prove it, though!

IMHO more effects are revealed by magicians with insufficient practice than by brilliant spectators.

I've had a friend figure out Ultra Gum. Without too much exposure, I suggest you always use glue.
