I posted an extra one of these in a different color on a giant social media site...
The response was SO GREAT.. that I decided to make them a permanent part of the wack-o-site! http://www.wack-o-magic.com/wackomagic/Devils_Hank.html |

As I said in the little darlings section, I think the fact that each side is a different material is broadcasting the method.
So it seems you have solved one problem but created another! I think props such as the devil's hank should look as commonplace as possible. magicians do like things shiny and colourful but I think in this case it's focusing attention were you don't want it. I think I'd prefer to use a hank that looked like an old tea-towel that I picked off the kitchen counter on the way to the gig. |

I agree with magicgeorge! It looks like a bag, not a piece of cloth.

To play devil's advocate, I think a point is being missed. The design is obviously not intended for a "button-down" audience. This thing screams fun and goofy. (No offense, if that's not the intent.)
It is also, in my own opinion, not a device that is best utilized as a centerpiece effect. Vanish something, and move on... hopefully to something at least equally as important and interesting. I have done kid shows for close to 40 years now. The one thing that is a constant is that they don't dwell on how something was done, >>> IF <<< they have something better to follow immediately. With the logic posed by the responses, the same would apply to 99% of all the "kid show" props out there. The idea is to use tools for their intended purpose, although some will always use a hammer as a screwdriver.

Good idea but Magic George is right. It looks like a winner if you make both sides the same.
Comedy is not an excuse for weak Magic as many great comic Magicians have proven. This is a simple fix going forward. I'd go with the black with white spots. The sag shows more on the white side. As Michael says you can just move on but the black is better. By the way, I wouldn't want to do this back lit. Once again the blacker side has less of a light problem. Mary Mowder |

Makeup Guy just posted in another thread that he's going to be producing them the same color on each side...NOW it's a winner if you're into the Devils Hank.

Good points, and I concede that the same color on each side is better for a vanish, when all heat would naturally be on the cloth. I'm not trying to argue the point, but am trying to give reason to think beyond the obvious. Not saying that the same fabric on both sides is not a good idea, it is, but the product as it stands is still useable in proper context.
Assuming the vanish was the end of the effect, with nowhere to go, finding the solution would be a straight line path from the effect. But, let's assume for a moment that a supposedly identifiable, and perhaps personal item was apparently vanished in the proximity of the cloth, then immediately shown to have traveled to an impossible (or at least remote) location. The inference would be that this object is one in the same, and the point of the vanish would be instantly removed from suspicion. Even if it was suspected of being a "trick" handkerchief, there is, to most spectators, a bigger mystery to process. I can think of a couple ways in which this particular trans-location effect could be done. But this is still assuming the cloth was used for the typical purpose. For those taking notes, I once saw a magician use a gaudy-looking square of cloth in some effect, handling it in a very casual manner, as a completely incidental (but justified) prop. He later gathered it into a bundled, and produced from it a glass filled with wine. It floored a room full of magicians.

I use a giant sized DH I made from three 18" scarves I found at Wal-Mart... It has double sides, anti-sag and three load compartments built into the middle section.
I've used it to vanish/produce/transform shoes, rocks, soda bottles, beer bottles, cans... you name it. Used two small beads on each of the important corners so I'd always know where the business end is. Forgive the wrinkles, I haven't ironed it yet after my last gig. Pics:

Thank you, ChrisG, but the other way is to simply go to my Web site (in my signature) and click on the button for Wizards' Journals to come up with a Table of Contents for all the Journals, or scroll down the home page and you'll see the contents of the latest Journal (we're up to #22 right now) plus links for all the past Journals on the main page. Finally, you can always Google "Wizard's Journal #21" (or whatever number) and there she is! Not too difficult to locate, I'd say.

Ekuth: How long ago did you find those at Wal-Mart? What kind of material are they? I do not normally shop at Wal-Mart but I would love to find those - they are absolutely beautiful!
Even if not making a DH with them, they would look beautiful when used as a regular little hank for other effects (at least to me). |

Thanks, Tommy and Dr. J;
I always loved the DH; I think it's one of the most deceptive props when handled (and built) properly. The scarves I found around... September or October of last year in the women's apparel section, by the gloves/hats/purses. I thought the swirl pattern was perfectly suited to the DH purpose, it draws the eye as well as confusing it and is SUPERB at hiding what little bulging get past the load chambers. It has really great "movement" and even fully loaded I can sling it into the air and do the standard "silk stroke" provers. Took about... eh, 2 hours or so to build, this is the second finished product after I worked out the bugs with my preliminary prototype. All consructed and sewn by yours truly. I added the small pearl beads (one white, one black) to ease handling and finding the "pockets" once folded. I'll be out and about later today and see if I can locate a few stragglers.

The standard DH that I use for all my shows currently was made by Lynetta Welch as Fabric Manipulation. She does a marvelous job with them and they work very, very well. I have never had a problem with bulging or anything with hers, and she also incorporates a small bead the same color as the silk at the open corner, so as to be able to locate it when necessary.
I prefer hers because they are classy and they match the colors in my ties that I wear when doing my restaurant gigs, and other formal occasions. |

I like it, Bill! Kind of a 50's abstract art pattern. Breaks up the field nicely.

I've made significant changes since the first post.. so I thought I'd add the link again.
These are made of a heavier fabric than most "silks"... so that you can put in a larger or heavier object, I'd imagine that even a live DOVE would fit.. New Colors.. and the spotted ones are now one fabric each. Customer feedback is important.. and listened to!! http://www.wack-o-magic.com/wackomagic/Devils_Hank.html |
