I am going to be doing a show for a wheelchair bound audience. Are there any audience participation tricks that you may recommend as being disabled-friendly?

I have performed for a lot of laypersons that were in wheelchairs. Especially at nursing homes. Pass out items to be examined. That is how I do my Linking Ring routine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FS78iI6cwh0

Pluck coins from their ears as you walk around doing the Misers Dream.

Several years ago, I performed for a home for handicaps. I talked to the activity director in advance, and arrange for her and her daughter to be available for being assistants, and also asked for her thoughts on how/who could be used in the show.

I don't remember exactly, but I think I did the Kap's Currency with two of the residents. They just needed to be able to count some dollar bills.

Another that I am considering, but haven't done, is Stoner's Sponge Ball Surprise. As long as they have reasonable use of their hands, that should work.

There are probably many effects that would work. But, as I started, knowing the capabilities of the audience is key. Discussing this with someone, such as an activity director, would be very helpful.

If you are talking about a home for handicaps, a sucker trick that uses the able bodied attendants would go over well. Along that line, I am thinking of doing a paper balls overhead type effect this way.

There's a great thread about this at the other magic eating place.

We do a lot of work with folks that have special needs. At these shows our priorities change. Instead of creating the polished "wow" experience that we normally do, we focus on making sure everyone feels like they're a part.

That means if it takes five minutes for someone to pick up a bead and put it in a tube, that's ok.

We've received raving reviews from the directors of these facilities for this approach. They really seem to like it.

Mathew:

Involving the people in your show sounds like a very good idea. Can you elaborate on what types of effects, or methods you used to accomplish this?

Also, what do you consider the "other" eating place?

Just get on the site and look at the different forums. You might post a message to the administrator of that site to see if he can help you find the particular thread you're looking for.

What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?

My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums.

I did browse through some of the forums, but...

I am so grateful for the organizational structure of things on the Café.
