Hi Everyone,
Years ago (30+ years ago when I was a teenager) I remember performing an escape/penetration involving a length of rope.
I sat in a chair, the rope went under my legs then looped around my wrists which were resting on my lap, then tied on top of my wrists. I would jerk my hands upwards and the rope "penetrated" my legs.
I can't remember much more than that and, admittedly it doesn't sound terribly entertaining from the description I've given, but I'd like to try and locate this effect and see if there's anything to it.
My recollection is that my father (now long deceased) taught it to me or I may have even learned it from one of those early magic sets.
Does this sound familiar to anyone?
Thank you!

It sounds like an escape from The Wiz Kid Rope DVD called "In Again Out Again": http://www.wizkidzinc.com/DVDs/rope01/wizkidsROPE01.htm

I forgot that Wiz Kid Qua-Fiki included his version of this "In-Again-Out-Again" rope release, not in his "Escapes For Teens Book," but in his "Super Hero Magic Book," in a chapter containing his "Super Hero Rope Routine." I wish I could remember all the things I remember.

Thanks Spellbinder,
I watched Qua-Fiki's video performance of "Super Hero Rope Routine" and the way the performer is tied up matches what I remember, but the escape/penetration is "through" the legs. Actually, instead of a single length of rope passing under my legs to start, I think it was two lengths of rope.
I think I know how I was tied up, but not how I got to that point (sounds like the movie "The Hangover" - LOL!).
Thanks again!

Two ropes; glad you mentioned it. You'll find it described in Qua-Fiki's "Escapes For Teens - Double Rope Escapes." The version he describes is not through the legs, but the principle is the same. He doesn't demonstrate that particular effect on the YouTube video.

This starts out sounding like the Abbott's Slick Tie effect, except the ropes does not penetrate the legs. It is an extremely fast escape from a wrist tie. A Chicago magician by the name of Bishop did it for years in his act, and Dick Stoner does it in his act for over 50 years.

To my knowledge this has never been a published escape in any book or magic set. It is or was a very highly secret rope escape, that some comedy can be added to during the tying and escape.
I only mention this because you said you are remembering from 30 years ago, and sometimes things are not exactly as we remember them to be. Dick Stoner explains this in his magic lecture DVDs as well.

That you "jerked" your hands, I doubt that this was a in & out type rope tie (which usually involve some cover).
Rather, it sounds like a version of the grandmothers principle. There are many variations of this, but they generally involve using 2 ropes. There may be versions using just one piece of rope
See impossible rope escape in Wilson's Complete Course.

I checked in the Ency of Rope Tricks, and there are a few single rope effects that use what I consider a modification to the grandmothers necklace method. Then use a "rod" or "post" and the like.
Abbots Slick Tie is in that book too. I've seen a very entertaining clip of Billy Bishop doing a very similar tie. I think the clip is still available on his son's website (and he at least used to be on the Café)

I missed another source for the Slick Tie type of effect, the Wiz Kids Rope magic. How could I forget

Thanks for the follow up posts everyone - much appreciated!
It was definitely not an in & out rope tie (that much I do remember - LOL!), but it did use two ropes and the grandmother's necklace principle. I don't have the Encyclopedia of Rope Tricks, but I will dig out Wilson's Course and see what I can find.
Thanks again!
