I have quite a bit of magic and puppets I've bought over the years. I have magic to entertain all ages.

In the past year, I've thought to myself that I do not need and will not buy anything else, but yet I still do.

Does this happen to you?

But, of course. Saying "I don't need any more magic" creates a para-normal dimensional aberration that guarantees within one week I will come face-to-face with some new piece of amazing flotsum, which, naturally, I must have.

For this reason, I have switched my category of magic to "collecting". In this way, buying more magic makes a lot of sense... almost required, you see.

I don't buy crap magic. I only buy the good stuff... That makes it OK, right?

My family says I'm a hoarder. That's probably true, but not in the sense of filthy rotten food gunk and vermin, like those poor souls on TV. Just a TON of magic stuff, some in storage containers, some not. Funny thing is, I know many other magicians with "collections" that far exceed mine in terms of piles of boxes, stacks of magazines, stuffed drawers, and furniture loaded up with things that don't fit in any of the other categories. At least you can walk through my house without having to step on or over any of it. Ha!

But, my addiction is a double-edged sword. I not only buy stuff, but I build it, too!

Of course there are advantages to having much more magic then you need. It's good to have different magic
for repeat shows. I keep track of what I do at every show, and then when I'm asked to perform at another time, I can look at what I did in the past and change my show up a little.

Then there is of course the matter of upgrading your show. Of course one can sell there old magic items, but in a lot of instances you sell your old stuff so much cheaper then what you bought it for.

I have a couple of theme related tricks I no longer do, but I have them to fall back on if a client wants a show based on the themed magic I have.

Lastly, I could be wrong, but it seems that one day, my Daughter or Grand-daughter will take over my business.

Have you every noticed that balloons, rubber bands, and other amazing flotsam adhere to each other when left for a long time at the bottom of a drawer? In short, I go out of my way to purchase magic I don't really 'need'?

Do you ever say "I don't need anything else."

Yes. I've also said I'm never drinking tequila ever again, never drinking rum ever again, and never drinking vodka ever again. Those didn't stick either.

Not the same. That's not a collection, it's a library.

Not performing these days, but when my act became a specialty (wine magic), shopping for magic became a completely different experience. I had a pretty good relationship with House of Magic in San Franscisco and Mark knew what to recommend and which direction to point me.

Street performance is not a crime.

"Do you ever say; I don't need anything else."

Yes, I say that after every marriage.

I knew a guy in New Orleans that was a dealer/collector, he had an out building/garage that was huge and packed with trunks and boxes of apparatus. In the house was rooms that you could not even walk into, it was packed so tight. I wondered what happen to all the stuff in the garage knowing the humidity in NO must have had some effect. Take a look at this guys house.

I collect magic catalogs. My collection is minuscule compared to some people I know.

I Love magic theory books. My last bought book is strong magic. I love to read about magic theory. It gives me more then just a book on tricks. A book on tricks makes me analytical about technique while a book on theory makes me analytical about magic completely.

Some effects I've bought and they sat, some for a few years ....

... then comes a show with special requests or circumstances and they fit right in

These days I deliberate purchases for quite a while, I know it often takes 6 months practice and rehearsal before the effect will go into the show (I spent over 6 months with "The Thing" including making modifications before I ever took it on stage) and 5 years to the rest of my life working on it

On the other hand I have a weak spot in the show am looking to replace with something that will play stronger ... I've got my eye on ........

Am with cirrus on theory books and biographies

Gee, since my original post on March 30th. when I really thought I didn't need anything else I have bought a chair suspension, and a Temple of Benares. Both had prices too good to pass up.

Now I'm saying it again. "I don't need anything else.

We fully realize you 'don't need anything else'. That is not the question. The question is: "Will you buy anything else?"

OOPS! I did it again. Well, it's really not my fault. I blame this on Tommy James, and his new trick called; "Escaped." As it seems that I'm mostly a children's performer, and a lover of anything Monster related I couldn't help myself. This fits perfectly with the magic I do.

On a positive note though, I'm having one of the best months money wise, that I have ever had.
