Greetings...

When going about creating a new show, how do you usually do it? Do you look at the props and effects you already have or know, and build a show around them, or do you come up with the ideas for a new show, and then make/buy/modify things you already have or know to fit the show?

For example, when I had the idea of creating an "edutainment" show about a specific holiday, I studied various books about the holiday history and customs, etc. and brainstormed regarding what aspects of the holiday and it's observance customs/requirements lent themselves to magical "explanation". Then I had to see what I had that fit, and in some cases bought/built new props (i.e. I built a squared circle that looks like a "temple" and used a large clay urn to make an "ancient oil jug" lotta device).

Do you come up with a "theme" to follow for a "regular" show (i.e. general audience/family/kids show)? Do you (or have you) developed a character or persona that then sort of dictates which tricks you would do? For my new family show, I want it to be comedic, with me partaking a character role, and using that character to dictate the "theme" of presentation. The David Copperfield unbuttoned shirt and jeans look is not for me, but neither is the completely formal tails and top-hat look. So my stage persona fits my real life personality... and I like a good flow to the show, so I work out how each routine "segues" into the next- I like for there to be some sort of connection between everything. We've all seen the guy with the bag of tricks who reaches in, pulls one out, and says "ok, for my next trick..."...

Anyway, share some ideas if you don't mind! Thanks...

Greetings...

I honestly believe that you have answered your own question.

All the best...
