Is it just me or do all of the audience members in these videos seem way over enthusiastic? Don't get me wrong. There's some great material on here. But it just seems that some of these guys are like five year olds and burst out in "OH MY GOSH HOW DID YOU DO THAT?!" at any little thing. What are your thoughts on this?

With all due respect,

David and Jon should do their own DVD.

As opposed to all those over the top reactions we now see on every demo shot on some street with a multitude of intoxicated spectators. L&L isn't perfect, but they know how to shoot a video.

My thoughts are that this was already discussed at great length some time ago.

Watch a Steven's Great Magic video/dvd and you'll appreciate the L&L audiences.

I believe the idea is to duplicate a live audience. Maybe they are over the top. But it does help the magic show better.

I actually think they do a pretty good job.

I'd buy the Cassandra DVD in a minute. And a calendar. And a beach towel - or whatever else she graced with her photo.

I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

The L & L audience prompted Richard Osterlind to release his "live without a net" DVD. He wanted to release something in front of a "real audience". I do think though, they can help with the enjoyment of the DVD's.

Didn't Richard release 'live without a net' because some viewers complain about the audiences being over the top, not that he had any complaints about the L&L audiences?

I agree that they make the DVDs more enjoyable. It's like seeing old friends in the audience.

I like that L&L has an audience. David Regal, Tommy Wonder, Bill Malone and Harry Lorayne had them eating out of their hands. Not easy to do when they've seen so much magic.

This topic seems to come up about once a year. It's important to understand why we do what we do with the DVDs.

It's our job to provide the best possible atmosphere for the performer. It's been suggested in other threads that we bring in a new audience every time. You never know how an audience is going to react and it's not fair to the performer if it's a bad audience that time. The people we bring in know there's going to be a magic show and have an expectation of how the day is going to go. They don't just sit there for an hour and watch. It's a much longer day than that.

We are one of the few DVD producers who produce multi-DVD sets with many routines on the DVDs. A lot of other producers are leaning towards the one effect per DVD product. If all you have to do is shoot one effect, then it's easier to take it to the streets and do it over and over again until you get exactly what you want or edit it so it has that Blaine-style feel to it. It's just not practical when you're releasing 20 - 30 effects on a DVD set.

There are different styles to each company who produces DVDs. If you look at the progression of magic on video, we've come a long way. Looking at the old Tannen's Stars of Magic videos, many of those were just the perfomer and maybe one or two other people to select cards. That's a tough situation for everyone on camera. Stevens Magic kicked it up a few notches by shooting in a TV studio and did bring in a larger audience for many of the videos. They even tried to recreate the settings in which each magician typically performed. We took it a step further than that. Other producers want a "purer", for lack of a better word, feel to their DVDs and shoot on the street. Different styles, different editing and perhaps different customer base.

But the thing everyone should take away from any DVD is the material and not how the audience reacted. You've got to add your own style to the effect so it suits you and the audience you are going to perform for.

First off I like the audience. Anytime you see a demo for a trick you only see the crazy audience, the ones that are over the top. However, I did notice that they use the same people. I rather like it. It makes me more at ease and that makes for a better experience.

I am a big fan of L&L DVDs. Their production quality is very good and I really have no problems with the audience. I have many of their DVDs and some effects get better reactions than others. You can pretty easily tell when an effect kills and when it doesn't.

I'm also a big L&L customer and have never been disappointed with my purchase. You're purchasing the DVD to see the performer, not the audience.
