I am thinking of learning a 3 fly routine that utilizes a sh**l. Can anybody recommend an easy routine that utilizes this gimmick? Thanks.

Due to the nature of "FLY", a [ probably is not really a good choice. Most are using extra. Or a modified [, which is the Slippery one.
Unless you want it to do "Across" style, not a "Fly" style, probably a [ can be utilized

Another good one is Coin Melody by Troy Hooser:

It's more than just a 3-Fly, but very magical looking.

Gary Kurtz Trio from his Unexplainable Acts book uses one of those, also known as Misty Like a Dream from a video.

Although it doesn't utilize a [, I highly recommend Eric Jones's Simplex 3-Fly, off his "Metal" DVD. Gets great reactions if you practice and perform it the way he does. Not at all hard to do.

Rannie,
That routine looks great, where you recommend learning something along those lines.
Very nice work!

My pleasure! Let me know what you think of it, as I was thinking of picking it up myself. You can never know too many 3-Fly routines, right?

Hey there Paul!
The one that I do the most is mentioned above - Coin Melody by Troy Hooser. It will take a fair amount of work to get it down (nothing really advanced save for one of the vanishes to most people, but that can be changed to suit your skill level), but the nice part about it is that it can be taken apart, and then re-assembled to your needs. That is essentially what Troy did to create that routine.

This uses just one regular shell? If so, quite impressive.

Hooser's Coin Melody wraps a routine around a three fly in the intro and the ending. A good way to present any three fly routine in my opinion.
Interesting how he handles the fourth "you know what."
Not at all difficult if that concerns you.

Yes, Troy's routine uses just one regular shell.

Can anyone comment on how difficult the Sanchez Fly is going to be? Most my coin work is of the matrix and chink-a-chink variety. Working with a [ in the hands will be a new venture for me.

I have 3Fly type effect called "Jingle" that uses any three coins -- best borrowed and no gaff.
It uses the sound of the coins clinking together as "convincer," "directed focus," and "misdirection."
fairly easy, but timing is critical
a second effect called "3 for Lie" can be performed with any three identical small objects, not just coins. I originated this effect using almonds, but have performed it with stones, coins, candy kisses and three small skulls on Halloween. Comes with a neat story line.

I am new to this realm of coin magic, i.e. 3 fly routines. What is the difference between Across style and Fly style. Is it coins in the hands versus coins at the fingertips? Thanks.

There are many out there man. Some of them harder then others. I found Chris Kenners 3 Fly is really nice with four coins... I lost on of my Silver Dollars so I do it with s [ and it still comes out really nice... Reed Mclintocks was the first one I ever learned and that was pretty easy... Now I'm considering getting Pretty Fly but it looks like it will require a bit more practice.
Here is the link to my Modified Kenner routine with a [ and the begining I think was from Paul wilsons 3 fly. I don't know I like to learn a lot of them and kinda mesh them up to make my own...
The first video was me well over 5 yrs ago doing my first 3 Fly from Reed Mclintock. and the second is last year me mixing that with Chris Kenners .

Paisa23,
thanks for the post. Would you suggest starting with Chris Kenner's 3 Fly? If so, where can it be learned/purchased? Thanks.

OK well I think others will say no, but to be honest I do not have amazing coin chops... just enough to get by with the effects that I do with coins and even though at first it was a little knacky I got the hang of the moves rather quickly. I'm still always fine tuning it but yeah I would say yes its a relatively easy 3 fly to learn but hard to master. If that makes sense.
Where to get it, I don't know for sure but maybe this will help. I have had my book for a few years...

hope this helps.
Also this is Chris doing it after his lecture..

Thanks again paisa23.
Any opinions on Daryl's as far as worth learning and difficulty factor for a newbie like me?

Paul - I actually started with 3 Fly III myself (or rather, it is one of the ones I started with), and I still occasionally use it today when its set-up will flow right into another routine. It is rather easy to do, and if any of the moves prove too difficult at first, you can change them around a little bit to help yourself out. Once you learn the routine, it is easy to mix and match the way the coins go across too. Regardless of the "Latest and Greatest" phase of magic, I think most performers would consider 3 Fly III one of the better versions out there, and if it not already considered so, in my opinion, I think it is destined to become a classic.
As usual, Daryl does a great job of teaching the routine and all the moves, and he also gives you some helpful hints and tips. The typed instructions and DVD also come with 4 dollar-sized (approximately) plastic poker chips to help get you started, but of course you can use half-dollar sized coins/chips if you prefer.
Coin Melody from Troy Hooser is one of my favorite routines, but it may not be for a beginner, although the routine is very well taught by Troy. It is packed full of magic and if there is a downside to doing the full routine the way Troy does it, it would be having to remember the correct order of the sequences (for some people). The only reason I say it may not be for the beginner is because of some of the sleights involved, but as with many of the routines that Troy publishes, the sleights/moves and phases of this routine can be changed or eliminated to suit. Highly recommended.
3 Fry from Chris Kenner can be found in a book called Spectacle by Stephen Minch. I personally would recommend learning something like the Daryl routine or the Hooser routine before trying to tackle this version, although it is a very good and very magical routine when practiced and polished.

R Paul Wilson's Crowded Coins is a real easy 3 fly to learn.
Can be found in his Knock em Dead video.
