At the moment I'm finalizing my next release. It will be called 'Impromptu Mastery'. It's my most ambitious product and so I will not release it before it is ready. I will post weekly updates in this thread every monday from now on with futher details. Here is a little something from the introduction to the manuscript [it's not edited yet so there might be some gramma issues still]:
"In my opinion impromptu magic is the most important part of our craft today. As magicians living in a society that demands entertainment with a moments notice you are expected to perform miracles without preparation and with only the simplest items. I've always been fascinated by the art of impromptu magic and it is therefore with great pleasure that I'm about to divulge my go to card act when handed a deck of cards. The routines in this manuscript are created with a single rule in mind: they must be performable immediately after you are handed a deck of cards.
Throughout the manuscript I'll give you an insight into my thinking as to why the effects are created as they are, as well as letting you in on a part of my magic vision. I believe such vision to be extremely private and that it is something each magician discovers on his/her own. Therefore I encourage you to listen to what I have to say and then decide whether it rings true to you and is something you will adopt. All are sound advice given after years of experience however some might fit your personal style more than others. Take what you need now and leave the rest until you need it later. "
More information on monday,

I downloaded Martin's 'Gemstone Genesis' over three years ago now!...I loved it then and still love it now.
It is one of the very few effects which I always carry with me and when combined with 'Prevaricator', can give a good ten minutes of solid entertainment.
I am also a strong advocator of impromptu, or even pseudo impromptu performance, so am interested as to what 'Impromptu Mastery' has to offer.

I chose to re-release Gemstone Genesis but was in serious doubt. It's an effect I perform every day. I have payed twice the cost for something only 10% as useful as Gemstone Genesis. The effect is easily worth the asking price.

Ok thanks Martin. Gemstone Genesis looks nice but it is only a 1 in 3 prediction.
I guess it could make a nice warm up though.
Do they have to poke their selection into your fist?
Thus bit just seems a bit odd.

Hey David,
The cool thing about a 1 in 3 prediction is that it eliminates the "too perfect" problem. The spectators will be wondering if they have witnessed the real thing or you just got lucky. That is a great moment. And using the colors gives you great reading possibility. You can play it up as much as you like.
They don't have to poke it into your fist. However, I found that it gives a better reveal if you don't open the fist before the reveal to take the stone. But it is not necessary by any means.

'Impromptu Mastery'
by Martin Vetter
PREVIEW #1:
I can now tell you that 'Impromptu Mastery' will contain four of my go-to 100% impromptu card effects. I have decided not to include any filler-material. Personally, I hate reading a manuscript in which I'm only able to actually use a small portion of the material. A different approach has been taken with 'Impromptu Mastery'. All the effects are perform able with any deck and no setup-time. Also, the effects are those effects I personally use. Every day. This is workers - not fillers! I have fooled laymen and magicians alike with the clever construction of these effects. All are easy to do yet deeply magical.
All four effects are described in utmost detail, with a heavy weight on presentation, as has become standard in all my releases. I will not spoil the reading by giving away the names of the effects nor their content. However, here is a small sneak-peek from the beginning of the presentation of two of the effects (keep in mind that this has not gone through editing yet so there might be gramma-errors):
Quote:
|
1st Effect:
Borrow a regular deck of cards and give it a few overhand shuffles. Then fan it from one hand to the other so the faces are towards yourself. Look with interest upon them. If you don't know the name of your spectator, ask him/her. In case of this presentation let's assume she is called Mary.
“Mary, I don't know if you are aware of it, but when you play around with cards as much as I do you get a close bond to many of them. For instance this one.”
[Place the first card from the face of the deck face-up on the table and name it.]
“I remember how I always used to play cards with my grandmother. For some reason I always won when I got that card. So many memories...”
...
2nd Effect:
Borrow a regular deck of cards, place it face down on the table and seat two spectators opposite you. If you don't know their names, ask them. In case of this presentation let's assume they are called Mary and Kelly. You begin by instructing the spectators:
“Mary and Kelly, what you are about to witness is a thought-experiment. In the early sixtieth a psychologist named Arnold Weber managed to show experimental proof of telepathy. He found that, under the right conditions, electrons travel between minds in a wave-like pattern.”
[Show this by making waves in the air with your right hand.]
“He used some special cards known as ESP cards, but as we haven't got any of those available right here, your playing cards should work just fine." |
|
The effects are not everything in 'Impromptu Mastery'. Next week we will take a closer look at the rest of the manuscript. Until then, Enjoy!

Martin Vetter

Being a magician, I think we should always be prepared with some form of "magic". I just stumbled onto your site, and your effects look super interesting looking forward.

I would be extremely interested in getting a review copy. I am an amateur magician who performs for friends, colleagues and family. It has become increasingly apparant to me that I need to concentrate on more impromtu routines since when I bring out any items it autmoatically raises suspicions as to whether it is gimmicked -- this is not neccesarily the case for professionals who are constantly bringing out multiple items, but as an amateur it is harder to say "let me bring out this packet/deck of cards and show you something" vice "here hand me your deck and let me see what I can do."
The other advantage I believe by concentrating on impromptu effects is that it will force me to become better at my sleights. I currently can do a passable DL, EC, and a few forces. Clearly I will need more as I move forward so hoping this will force me to learn some new moves. FWIW with a few exceptions now that I am concentrating on impromptu effects I am getting much better reactions. I still use a few gimmicks because I love the effects, but it is becoming a much smaller set.

The post should be IMPROMPTU or GIMMICKED?
I think IMPROMPTU MAGIC is IMPORTANT because it IS MAGIC
Magic with something is like manipulating with something with a presentation
IMPROMPTU magic is like HARRY POTTER
U get MAGIC out of anything
"IMP"ortant "R"ealm "O"f "M"agic with "P"otential "T"hings around "U"

'Impromptu Mastery'
by Martin Vetter
PREVIEW #2:
So, what is in the manuscript other than the effects? 'Impromptu Mastery' also contains twelve sections revealing part of my magic vision. I will not give any specifics as I think readers should discover it on his/her own. But here is a preview from one of the essays (keep in mind that this has not gone through editing yet so there might be gramma-errors):
Quote:
| "The first thing a magician needs to understand in order to progress is that he is at heart a craftsman. Nothing more, nothing less. Magic is a craft. The ability to create wonder and amazement is a craft like the ability to weave a carpet. That is essential to a magicians understanding of his work. Whether you are an amateur or working professional you are a craftsman. Depending on which kind of magic you like to perform you will have different tools at your disposal; cards, pen & paper, scene props and so on. No matter which tools you use there are certain steps you'll need to take. These are the steps every craftsman takes on his road to mastery.
First, you'll have to learn the basics of your craft. Next, you research and practice to become more skilled. You study everything about your craft and learn the more complex techniques to further develop your skill. When you find that you are qualified you begin creating with your craft. You use the things you've learned in order to create new material. To begin, you are eager to include all you've learned in your work and create one large mess. After doing this for years, slowly, you begin to realize that mastery is not about making complex and complicated creations. It's quite the contrary. A true masterpiece reveals itself in that it's simple. Amazingly, this realization takes years for the craftsman to reach because he is knee deep in all his complex research and complicated learning.
To sum up the road to mastery looks like this:
Simplicity (learning basics) → Complication (research & perfection) → Simplicity (mastery)
Now let's look closer at how we may utilize this in our craft - Magic."

I don't think that one Worldwide review of 'Impromptu Mastery' would be sufficient!
Perhaps three or four of us could be nominated?

Hey guys,
I didn't know who Martin Vetter was until a few days ago, when I decided to purchase his Palm Vision after seeing all good reviews, and I gave it a read through. Immediately, my head spun with lots of ideas, and alternatively, I didn't like one aspect of the routine which I discussed with Martin, and after having an awesome Skype session with Martin, I gave him my ideas on how Palm Vision could be better, even thought it was already a great piece of card mentalism, I felt it could be a lot smoother, so Martin then took one part of my idea nad mixed it with his idea, and now we have an alternative version that one could use which is just as clean as the version in the manuscript.
I have taken a look at some of the material from Impromptu Mastery, and this is A-list material!
If you like mentalism with cards, you will want to get this!
Martin and I talked and talked, and we discussed various parts of performance, essays, etc, etc.
Very solid advice, and good thinking, and by the way the methods are genious!
There is one effect in the book that is worth the price of the manuscript! I will just say PSI-XXXXXXXXXX.
Sorry I cant give more details, but this will be worth the wait, I promise.
If anyone wants to know my handling for Martins Palm Vision, PM Me.
Thanks
